[It's after dark, so it's probably hard to see Horst, but he's out in the yard. Covered in dirt. With a makeshift hoe in hand.]

Well! I've got a patch of land that is, I hope, just ripe for planting. I've been reading up what I can on gardening.

What I learned, however, is some plants do better with different PH balances than others. And I know that some of you are very scientifically minded, so how difficult would it be to create a litmus test for the soil patches?

Come autumn I want to have the largest pumpkin at the fair. Or at the very least in the city.

A pumpkin is a hollow, bright orange...gourd that you can carve up and put lights in to use it as a lantern. I'll draw you a picture sometime.

And I don't eat them, actually...I'm trying to make myself useful to the omnivores in the community is all. Are you getting enough meat?

I don't know what a gourd is but it sounds really weird... [It can't be too bad though, since most things that are orange, he likes.] And lanterns are lights in pumpkins? Is it made of fire?

Can be! You've seen the beeswax candles around the parts of the city that don't have generators? That's what I'll be putting in mine.

I haven't nothing against it. Especially if you're planning on growing stuff I can use to make herbal tea. [Raven is nothing if she ain't practical.] ...I guess I just didn't know you had such a liking for gardening.

Unfortunately I do not know much about farming, other than knowing that certain plans grow better at different times of the year. I'm also unfamiliar with what a litmus test is. Clearly it is something we do not have in Hyrule.

A litmus test helps you figure out if your soil is too acidic for certain plants. I expect in Hyrule you have better ways of figuring that out, though...

I see. It sounds like something that would be very helpful when it comes to these sort of things.

We may have some similar methods, but I do believe there is some magic involved in finding out the properties of soil.

[Even if it is just very basic magic.]

Link did tell me of a man who sold him magic beans as a child that grew into large plants that could be used to transport him to a different location.

I wish I knew more of magic. Or was more capable of it, at any rate. It's dying out in my world.

Have you any idea if making those beans would be possible here?

Uhhhh, I'll see what I can do. I mean, I'm not the most science-minded person out there, but I should be able to figure out something to tell you whether the soil is alkaline or acidic. Not going to be very refined, but there might be something.

So long as it works, no need for the polish and refinery. I'll gladly pay you in the crops it yields, or some other currency, of course. Those talents should be rewarded!

If I'm gonna look into this whole beer thing this summer, I'll need something anyway, it sounds like. So this should be good for everyone.

I should like that very much! You'd have a share of the crops, of course. Have you gardened before?

Yes. He is a hobbit. So he'll be short, have brown hair, possibly curly, and his feet will have hair as well. Other than that, he looks like a human.
