"Ah, hello...! I apologise, it seems that I am unavailable currently! If you would please leave a message, then I shall return to you at my earliest convenience!"
[Ah, crap. She really should have expected this, if she knew that those two were talking?
Well. It's fine. Right? If she explains, Kido's bound to understand. But she feels an abstract kind of feeling like her heart's been grabbed and she doesn't think she can talk. So she types back.
It takes her about thirty minutes.]
Ah, I see. Have you met Mr Liam, Kido? What is it?
I don't. If I have done something to upset him, I am certainly apologetic, but all that I have done, I have chosen to do for his sake.
[It's... not really a lie. She has the vague idea she's fucked up somehow (well gosh if everyone was basically like 'hey Elaine you done goofed' you'd probably get that at some point too), but she doesn't see where. He's not the kind of person to get so upset because she can't love him back. As for everything else, she's just trying to help. Why is everyone acting like that?]
ah you really are pretty dense. it's obvious, you know. what kind of friend tells someone they won't talk to them anymore but they'll still be around? you abandoned him. of course he's upset.
for the record, you're wrong, too. he's not mad at you for making friends with us.
If he saw what all of you have done to me, then he would certainly be angry. The person that I had originally been and the person that I have become differ so vastly that if I were to speak with him at length -- it would certainly become noticeable. The person that Liam befriended and trusted as a leader, amongst other things, is not the same as the person that you have come to know. Rather than realizing the mistake that he has made in coming to know that person, I would prefer that he retain only the memory of the Elaine that he loved.
[A handwritten letter arrives for Elaine. The writing is flowing but legible cursive, but the writer periodically switches between red and green ink, and it is decorated with drawings of alchemical symbols.
It's a Christmas greeting, all right.]
Dearest Elaine,
You are most cordially invited to a celebration of family, friendship, forgiveness, and estrangement on December 17th from 3:00PM, or earlier, until whenever we feel like stopping, at [the address for the warehouse]. This season mustn't pass by without a grand affair full of of food and gift-giving, in the best of Christmas traditions.
Oh, but you don't have to bring gifts. There won't be any set gift-giving time. Besides, do you really want to give your friends presents so early? It's far better to make them wait until the 25th. Patience is an important quality to learn for the winter months. Of course, I'll prepare the food, unless you wish to contribute some. Please keep any amount of arsenic in food below fatal levels for human children!
In the spirit of Christmas and all ritualistic holidays designed to prepare communities for defence against a harsh winter of dangerous weather and low quantities of food, you are invited to bring anyone you feel like. While more people is a greater strain on resources, the contribution of any individual to the group balances that out with the warmth and love provided. Let's gather together and avoid a cruel death in the months to come.
Hoping for your presence and survival, your friend, Christopher Chareau de Red
[post is here, tag in at your leisure or handwave or excuse yourself however you like!]
[At some point between the beginning of the 24th and the end of the 25th, Christopher delivers (handed off in person or left at a doorstep) a Christmas gift: a book on human facial expressions/emotions and how they're related (an 'atlas of emotions'). He is looking out for you, friend.]
[Likewise! On Christmas morning, Chris will find in his door a small box. If it's opened, there's a long, red winter scarf inside, and under that, a picture book of the flora and fauna of the island of Hokkaido.]
[A mysterious box has been left at Elaine's door in the early hours of morning. Opening it reveals this, this and this charming souvenir tucked beneath it all. There's even a card!]
[... Oh. Oh right. She forgot to actually give him the gift. Whenever he comes back in, there will be a Mysterious Box in his room, right in the entrance but positioned so no one will step on it. The door is still locked if it was and the room looks totally undisturbed, so no one broke in; it's just. Sitting there? Addressed to Kano.
Inside is a long, white scarf made of warm material, folded neatly. On top of it are some photos of Sapporo in winter, all of which conveniently feature Kido being very cute. Maybe one of Elaine being cute with her. And an attached note:]
It is all right! I was able to get several lovely photographs myself. Thank you, Kano!
[It isn't much. A small stack of papers, neatly bound up by a simple clip, no wrapping, no bow. In fact, you'd have no idea that this was a gift at all if you didn't know the content matter.
But if she flips through the papers, she'll find out that it's all handwritten, nice and neat, and the contents? Mathematical physics. Several observations and personal advice on how to learn advanced concepts etc etc.
And in the very back of the notes, there are a few basics for alchemy as well. There's no clue as to who this is from, but it should be rather easy to figure out hopefully.]
