Official statistics for Alderney are compiled by the States of Guernsey Data and Analysis team, details of the statistics provided can be found below. All reports use data sourced from the Rolling Electronic Census, an award winning IT system completed in late 2014, which collates demographic, employment and economic data from several separate States of Guernsey databases.
Population
The Alderney Electronic Census Report is published annually and provides headline information on the population of Alderney at 31st March.At the end of March 2023, Alderney's population was 2,167.
The population increased by 1.6% (35 people) over the year ending 31st March 2023.
There was a natural decrease of 24 people and net migration of 59 people over the year ending 31st March 2023.
Employment
The Alderney Employment Bulletin is published annually and provides headline information on employment at 31st March.There was an increase of 0.5% in the number of people either employed or self-employed for the year ending 31st March 2024.
The number of employed people increased by 0.7% and the number of self-employed decreased by 0.6% over the year ending 31st March 2024.
Earnings
The Alderney Earnings Bulletin is published annually and provides headline information on median earnings at 31st December.Median earnings increased by 6.9% between the year ending December 2022 and the year ending December 2023, from £28,172 to £30,127.
Household Income Estimates
The Alderney Household Income Estimates Report provides a profile of household incomes.The overall mean household income after deduction of social security contributions, income tax and imputed housing costs (equivalised) was £37,070 (£713 per week) and the overall median was £31,008 (£596 per week) in 2022.
Residential Property Stock and Prices
The Alderney Residential Property Stock and Prices Bulletin provides a snapshot of Alderney's domestic property stock at 31st March and tracks how this has changed over time. It also measures average price changes in residential properties purchased on the island each year.At the end of March 2025, there were 1,510 domestic property units in Alderney.
By tenure, 47% of the units were owner occupied, 45% were privately rented, 5% were affordable and 4% had a tenure of 'Other'. Within the privately rented category, 36% (16% of the total housing stock) were identified as having an owner whose primary address was not in Alderney.
The mix-adjusted average purchase price index for all freehold residential houses and bungalows transacted during 2024 was 1% lower than for 2023, but 7% higher than in 2019. NB: the mix-adjusted price index measures changes in the value of the freehold properties sold during the period and is not a reflection of the change in the value of any one property over time. Many factors, including age, location and quality, determine the actual value of individual properties.
There were 52 residential property transactions during 2024, compared with 43 during 2023.

The Alderney Indicators of Poverty Report 2023 looks at the extent of the risk of social and economic poverty in Alderney using a multi-dimensional set of indicators, including aspects of income, employment, health, crime and housing.
