Marina/Criminal Minds AU thing

Kitty takes a seat in the back of the room and off to the side. She'll be less noticed over there munching on popcorn and taking swigs of Mt. Dew. Sure, it's a conference on violent crime and not a movie, but it's still her idea of entertainment, so why not? Maybe this isn't what the average nearly twenty-year-old girl does for fun in her free time, but she's always had trouble focusing her interests.

There was that time when she was going to be a ballerina. Then there was that new computer hardware company she was going to start. Oh, and then she was going to be a pilot, but not before trying her hand as a multilingual diplomat. She didn't get very far with that one. It called for a little more refinement—or stuck up bullshit—as she called it than she could stomach. She even entered the police academy for awhile. And of course all this was after graduating college at fifteen with double degree in physics and computer science and then spending a year bumming around Europe and Asia. It's really hard to tell which of these potential career paths had her parents most hopeful or most discouraged. They are always supportive of their little girl, but they are not unwilling to voice their concerns about her lack of direction. Or her plethora of directions as the case may be.

So, today might just be interest 237 on the list, but it didn't bug her. She had an apartment, a cat ironically named Doggy, a few friends, and a job as a bartender at nights to pay the bills. The academy thing hadn't held her interest, but she had read a few books on profiling and that was something, so when she heard a few of the FBI's profilers were going to be at a conference, she had to check it out, right? The first part with the blond is pretty lame, but Dr. Reid takes the podium and suddenly there are tree fetishes. She has to cough to cover a laugh at the way the audience reacts to him. He's definitely kind of dweeb. Also, kind of cute, but maybe that's the sea of bad hair gel and off-the-rack suits around him making him look better.

When the conference breaks, she notices the way he looks like he doesn't know what to do with himself and she circles around.

"I'm never going to look at trees the same way again." She smiles, waiting for him to acknowledge her. What she wasn't expecting was the way his already large eyes widened even further like he was seeing a ghost or the way he dropped his better bottle—cap off. The splash of water against her sandal-wearing foot draws her attention down. He still looks a little word-impaired so she tries again. "You know they usually warn you if you're sitting in a splash zone at a show."

"I..." His voice stutters it's way out of his mouth finally and he puts an arm out as if to catch the bottle that dropped second ago. It looks like his face is struggling between emotions. Frown. Smile. Whatever comes with being perplexed. The last one, she definitely reads as hope, and it's her turn to be surprised when she hears him whisper her name. "Kitty?"

"...That's a hell of a trick you've got there." She's amazed actually. Confused. Even a little suspicious. "You didn't mention that as part of the profiling thing. Have we met?"

Yes is what he wants to say. Yes, and we spent several weeks together. You showed me how to penetrate a tree. Several times. Why do you think I'm holding this lecture? Because you inspired it. Don't you remember?

Only, it's all too clear that she doesn't and that sickening realization makes his heart drop like a stone. When he woke up in his own bed several weeks prior, Marina nothing but an extremely vivid dream and a lingering fear that it wasn't a dream at all, he never once thought about the possibility of finding her. They'd talked about it, that night on the rooftop, he remembered as much but never dared to actually entertain the idea that it could be true.

And now she's standing in front of him, as real and alive and breathing as he remembers her. It takes all he's got to not let those words spill out, and the only thing keeping him from sweeping her up in a hug is that look of utter confusion on her face. She doesn't remember.

No - it's not even her.

Finally he gains some semblence of control over his expression, gathers himself up best he can. She doesn't remember because it's not her and there is nothing left for him to do but brush it over and leave, no matter how hard it is to snuff out that last flickering flame of hope. He clears his throat, readjusts the shoulderstrap on his bag, and where his eyes could barely see anything but her a minute ago he's now making an effort to look anywhere else but in her direction.

"No, I guess we haven't." Short, to cover up how strained his voice is. "Excuse me."

"Yeah, exactly. It's a small world."

Small world indeed. What are the odds of them bumping in to each other in Chicago, right after he's held a lecture on a subject that is at least marginally related to something she used to do around him? Sticking things through trees, even if there wasn't even the slightest twinge of sexual content it still makes him think of her and maybe there was something, an after-construction of awe and budding trust. Her hand in his, the not-even-noticeable tingle of molecules being rearranged and then there was poker and movie dates and bringing dinner over. A whole life.

He turns his attention to her at the question, reluctantly noticing the differences that still fails to surprise him - the hair, the way she looks her age, the clothing. Some of it adds up, other things don't and all together it's a painful picture to look at. Her but not her. So close and still miles away.

"I'm fine." he replies, clearly not fine at all. "I just really need to go."
thisiscalm: (neutral; that's not right)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-05-31 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well. That didn't work out nearly as well as he'd hoped, and he's quickly running out of excuses. It doesn't help that she's bringing up stalkers either, because now he doesn't have much of a choice but to give her some sort of satisfying explanation or she'll really walk away with the wrong idea. He doesn't want that, even if it isn't his Kitty. Still, how could he possibly tell her the truth? Even more so, how could he do it and have her believe him..? And then what? It won't change a thing.

Then again... he never could resist her for long. She has a way of getting in closer than she has any right to be.

He relaxes just a tad, shifting his weight as he tries to come up with a good way to start. For a moment he contemplates just blurting it out in the hopes that it might trigger something, a dimensionally coded memory or whatever else they usually go for in sci-fi, but this isn't a movie and so he ends up with a cliché. Not a great way to begin, but at least it's a start.

"You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
thisiscalm: (neu; unsure)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-05-31 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
He sighs in resignation. So stubborn, Kitty... but okay. Fair enough. You got all the warnings he could possibly give you and now he has no choice but to... well, make himself look like he's crazy, most likely.

"Okay... but not here. Let's go someplace where there's a little less risk of being overheard."

He doesn't wait for a reply, just motions for her to come with him before walking off to find a spot away from the crowd. Seeing as there's a bit of a build-up to the actual truth he might as well save them some time and start talking right away.

"How much do you know about the many-worlds theory?"
thisiscalm: (neutral; did you know)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-05-31 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course you do."

He can't help but smile at that, fondly. It makes sense, not to mention how much easier this will be to explain now that she's already got the theory down.

He comes to a stop in a mainly abandoned corridor, well out of earshot from the rest of the conference but still not so secluded that she might get uncomfortable being alone with him. A habit of his profession, or something like that.

"You were right... we have met before. Just not here." He says the word with enough emphasis to make it clear that he's not talking about Chicago. It's a different kind of not here. The kind he hasn't been able to voice in all this time, and even now he fumbles his way through the explanation.

"I know for a fact that there are other dimensions. I know it sounds crazy but... it's true. There are other worlds. Other versions of the same individuals."
thisiscalm: (light; assertive)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-01 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
"That's exactly what I'm saying."

They're at the point where he predicted she'd leave, but she's still here and still listening and so he continues the only way he can think of that might convince her that he isn't just out of his mind. Not that he hasn't considered that possibility, even more so now that she's appeared but what can you really do?

"Katherine Anne Pryde. Nineteen. Your favorite color is blue, favorite food is Chicago-style deep dish pizza. Pepperoni, to be specific. You have a tendency to hang out on roof-tops and when you were younger you wanted to be a ballerina."

There's so much more where that came from, little quirks and habits that only come with careful observing and lots of it, but that feels too creepy. Some of it might even be too timeline specific to mention, and that thought in itself prompts him to add a disclaimer.

"Your mileage may wary, but that's the Kitty Pryde I used to know."

[personal profile] unphased 2012-06-01 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Roof-tops are kind of fun, but I don't really think it's a thing. I'm also pretty sure a stalker could have found any of that out, but a stalker would also know I was actually in a dance company for a little while." So, you know, actual ballerina. Just extremely short-lived.

She watches him, thinking, bizarrely, he really does look like he's telling the truth or at least what he believes is the truth.

"Okay, let's say I believe this. How did you get to another reality?"
thisiscalm: (neutral; crossed)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-01 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
He smiles just a bit, wryly. It does sound like something a stalker would say, doesn't it? Even more so since he's got a lot more personal information stored up (like her preference in underwear) and he doesn't blame her for sticking to that conclusion, because the truth is really so bizarre.

Hearing that she was actually an actual ballerina for a while releases a small flutter in his chest. This may not be his Kitty, but it's somewhat bittersweet to know that there's a version of her that got to do what she wanted.

"I don't know." he replies. "Believe me, I have tried to explain that experience as everything between a severe allergic reaction to resveratrol to a plain old fashioned delusion to... I don't know. But the truth is... I was in an underwater prison for three weeks. It's located in an ocean called Eloquios, one point six nine miles below the surface. I met... Kitty on my first day. We became friends."

And that's where he stops, for now. Maybe she'll finally think he's nuts and leave it be. Maybe not. He's not sure what he's hoping for, but he's not about to go into any greater details before he knows.

"I'm not asking you to believe me, but you asked how I know you and that's... that's how."
unphased: (Unsure - Skeptical)

[personal profile] unphased 2012-06-01 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, she couldn't pull herself away if she tried. This is so much more interesting than anything else she had planned for today. She doesn't believe him. Not yet. How can she? But at the same time, she doesn't really think he's lying either.

"Okay, so this other me... What was she doing in prison?" Just taking one thing at a time, because, no, that wasn't the most shocking part, but where do you really start with this kind of thing?

"What were you doing for that matter? Don't they vet FBI agents pretty thoroughly?"
thisiscalm: (neutral; concentrating)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-01 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Killing someone in the line of duty is still murder. The, uhm... warden didn't believe in context very much. At least half of the people in there would never have been convicted in a court of law here."

He shifts a bit, deliberately avoiding answering that first question, but he still needs to say something. What's the proper way to talk about someone's alternative, anyway? Especially if they're so incredibly different?

"As for her... I'm not sure if I should tell you."
unphased: (Curious - Maybe fond)

[personal profile] unphased 2012-06-01 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Why not? You're telling me other things. And she's kind of me, right?"
thisiscalm: (dark; stern)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-01 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
He hesitates for just a moment longer. But... okay. She asked for it.

"Her full crime list included several counts of murder, attempted murder, assault, assault with a deadly weapon, treason, theft, destruction of property—public and private, hacking, cruel and unusual teaching methods, abuse of power, negligence, trespassing, invasion of privacy, unlawful possession of firearms, reckless driving, endangering the public safety, disturbing the peace, vandalism, contributing to the destruction of a timeline, vigilantism, operating a jet without a pilot's license, aiding and abetting fugitives, corruption of minors, kidnapping, and arson."

A beat, but if he's said this much he might as well say the rest. That one little detail that made Kitty into the person she was. The thing that really drew him to her from day one.

"Oh, and she could walk through walls."
unphased: (Surprised - Just staring)

"...Um..."

Yeah, that's all you get!
thisiscalm: (light; a snack?)

Pretty much the reaction he was anticipating.

"Don't say I didn't warn you."

[personal profile] unphased 2012-06-01 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
"O...kay.

First of all, I have a pilot's license." They aren't that hard to get actually. A few classes and then logging practice hours. "Secondly, I don't teach unless you count some minor TAing which was neither cruel nor unusual. And I would never kill someone. I looked into the police academy and started the training course, but..." That was still pretty far from actually killing anyone in the line of duty!

"I don't even know where to start with the timeline thing, but everyone can walk through walls. They're called doors."

thisiscalm: (neutral; profile)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-01 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
"No, that would classify as walking through a door. Not a solid brick wall. Or trees. Or four floors of concrete to get to the roof. Or people, for that matter. She could re-arrange the molecular structure of herself, as well as anyone she was physically touching. Like me."

There's an odd sense of fondness here, as if being dragged through walls was some sort of display of affection and trust. Could be because that was exactly what it was to him by now.

"I know what a mutant is." At least in basic scientific shades. "What's an X-Man. Some kind of chromosome reference?"
thisiscalm: (neutral; watching)

[personal profile] thisiscalm 2012-06-02 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Explaining that would require explaining pretty much the entire set-up of her world."

Which he could, at least in broad strokes. Kitty had told him a lot about the cullings and the "mutie freaks" and just how little there was left of the world, but knowing wasn't the same thing as needing to share. He still had some doubts about whether or not he should've told her this much, but there you go.
