Battles can go any number of divergent ways, so it can't be too surprising if in a galaxy very close by in a time not too distant, one played out a little differently. This time Kylo Ren was not crossing a bridge only for his father to find him and call out his given name. No, this time Kylo confronted Rey and Finn outside as Chewie and Han left the charges. The battle wasn't fueled by the grief and pain of a recent loss. They were fighting for their own lives but more so each other's. With Rey knocked out on the ground Finn fought bravely, but poorly against a much stronger adversary. Kylo was not bleeding or in pain from a wookie bowcaster and the last thing Finn remembers is white hot pain splintering through his body and the fear that there is no way to protect Rey now.
That is, until he opens his eyes in a medical bay in the resistance fleet. His body feels stiff and heavy. There are bandages wrapping him and monitors surrounding him. He doesn't know how much time has passed, but his mind goes right back to that cold landscape and Rey lying on the ground helplessly. He can't know she got up and fought. He can't know the way the bombs or Han and Chewie themselves might have changed the course of things. All he knows is he doesn't see her now.
"Rey!"

"She's all right. She's not here, though."

Han is sitting nearby, scrolling idly through a datapad of reports he's not actually very interested in. Dry and simple as the statement is he's still a little uneasy about it; not that Rey and Chewbacca can't handle the Falcon, but having just gotten his ship back he was loath to let it out of sight again. But bringing Luke back... That's not his task, he understands that much. He can do some good here, telling the Resistance what he knows, catching up on everything he's missed.
It's good to be with his wife again. They're still burdened by their grief, but it's different now. All this time he's been trying to go back to the life he led before, it's surprising how easily he's slipping back into being General Solo.
"Relax before you hurt yourself."

"What happened?"

Against his son. That knowledge still aches enough that he'd only half-listened to the hurried story Rey recounted; he'd set about being useful instead, joining his first mate in getting the ship ready to fly again. Knowing how close he came to crossing paths--
He shakes his head to keep from falling off into useless musings.
"They found the rest of the map." He sits a little straighter, sets his reports aside. "So how do you like heroism?"
Because this? This is actually kind of a big part of it.

He turns his head to better see Han. Finding the map fills in some blanks. That's where Rey is, right? Finding Luke Skywalker? And he's stuck here like a 'hero' apparently.
"Did she get him? Kylo Ren? Is he dead? He's not going to stop otherwise."
no subject
"The First Order evacuated," he says simply. Ben isn't dead; Leia would know, and somehow Han imagines he'd know, too, even though there's no reason he would. The Force goes over his head every time, but it's his son. The world would have to feel different.
"With any luck she'll bring Luke back soon."
no subject
"Didn't that guy decide to go into hiding? How do you know he'll come back just because Rey asks him?"
no subject
"That guy is the closest thing I have to a brother. I trust him to do what's right, and you oughtta do the same."
no subject
"I just wish I was doing something."

The First Order can't have much nice to say about the Jedi in general. At the very least, he figures, Finn must know Luke is important. It wouldn't bother him if Finn thought he wouldn't be able to help, because of course they'd downplay their enemies' abilities... But Luke is his friend, if he's a little quick to defend him that's why.

He's not getting any of it.

Understatement of the century! Han doesn't know the First Order as well as Leia does, doesn't know it like he did the Empire, but he's heard enough. He gets that the kid didn't have options. He's heard that he didn't have a name.

"Why aren't you with her?"
no subject
He shifts, drawing himself up to lean forward, elbows on his knees.
"This is something for her to do."

"It takes some getting used to. You kind of stumbled into something bigger than you, you know."

"You don't." But that's all right. It takes time. Han spent years risking his neck while claiming he was only in it for the money.
"If you've got any more to tell us about the First Order, Leia will want to hear it. But I can probably hold her off til you're feeling up to it."
no subject
"I'll tell you anything I know, but a lot of it is probably stuff you've already figured out or that won't help much." None of it feels pressing at least.
"Is Poe Dameron okay?" Somehow he's already sure he is. After what happened on Jakku he feels like the man is unkillable.

It'll probably get tiring and repetitive, but it's not going to be a hostile interrogation. No force or Force necessary. But chances are none of it is crucial-- things feel a lot less pressing when there isn't an impossibly big weapon aimed at you and charging-- so he might as well get his strength back. Possibly this is Han feeling protective for a minute; don't call attention to it.
"Yeah. Tough kid. Good choice, busting him out."
