The Origami Promise
Characters: Winn & Kitty
Setting: Drift Fleet AU
When: Months after Winn leaves the fleet and Kitty awakes from a 2 month coma
[As consciousness seeps back to Kitty she slowly becomes aware of waking up. Her body shifts and it feels stiff and sluggish. She has a sense of being too tired to wake up, but there's something about the lessened response of her body that makes her mind more eager to get it's bearings, so she forces her eyes open and at first glance nothing is out of the ordinary. It's her room or at least her ceiling. She can see the picture of her parents from this angle and that is a comfort. She's hungry, but what else is new? She doesn't feel hungry enough to go to the kitchen. Maybe she should just go back to sleep. But as she turns her head she realizes Seeker isn't sleeping beside her bed like he's done since she inherited him. She tries to remember if there is a reason. Did Kurt want him for something? The door isn't open. Did he disappear like Robb, just later? She pushes herself up on her elbow when she bumps something and hears the rustle of paper. It's familiar in a way that makes her heart freeze in place as she looks down to see a blue origami rose resting beside her.
Fortunately for her ability to go on living her heart is beating again, albeit faster and harder than before. She can feel it drumming in her ears and she looks around the room again as if maybe she just missed the only one she could imagine making her something like that. Maybe he's just hiding in the corner. But the rooms are small and even in this strangely drowsy state she knows better as she swings herself into action, sitting up and feeling her head spin from the motion. She wants to run down the halls looking for him, but she's not sure she can make her body comply. It's also not actually the most efficient way of doing it.
She spots her communicator and grabs, it clutching it close as if someone might try to snatch it away from her if she doesn't carefully guard it. She programs in who she wants to contact. She did this so many times while he was in the fleet. She also did it quite a few times after he left. Just listening to silence on the other end, speaking out into the void where only the Atroma could really hear her. Kitty's voice is as atrophied as the rest of her as she speaks for the first time in two months without realizing how long it's actually been. None of that matters now. Not when he might answer back this time.]

Winn?

no subject
then it happened. confetti. new ship. winn doesn't wait around to so much as say hello to anyone - he makes a mad dash to the cargo hold, jumps on a shuttle, and makes his way to the twin roses.
he spends most of his day sitting by her side, not wanting her to wake up alone. at night, he sleeps on the floor by her bed. he meets his friends in the twin roses kitchen, not wanting to wander too far. every day that passes without her opening her eyes stretches into an eternity. he crafts. he works on his theories. he eats. he bathes. he shaves. he sits with kitty.
when she does wake, he's not in the room with her; he's in the kitchen, fixing a breakfast tray. his communicator, however, is in the room with her, sitting on the shelf by her bed as he intends to be back in a few minutes and really - what are the odds that something exciting would happen in that short a time span?
it's the fleet. he should know better.
he considers his breakfast for a moment, and then decides to make it crafty - fashioning a little dinosaur out of his toasted wheat solids with fixings - before heading back to the room. he comes in casually, like he's just been here all along, closes the door, sets down the tray and as he's about to sit - realizes he's not alone here anymore. ]
Kitty! You're awake! [ if the world could figure out a way to run itself on a smile, the one winn has on right at this moment could power it for a decade. ]
no subject
She doesn't understand. He's surprised she's awake. Is it just another day and he thought she'd sleep in longer? Was losing him some sort of horrible, realistic dream? Or was she in one of those comas. That would have given them more time to craft a mental landscape where he was gone and she was dealing with the aftermath. Or maybe he's just back? There are darker thoughts tumbling around in there because of course there are. Of course she's thought of a telepath playing tricks or the Atroma creating a false reality or a shapeshifter trying to manipulate her. These things feel more at home in the framework of her life than something as good and simple as just getting the man she loves with all her heart back in her arms.
But she doesn't hesitate. She pushes herself onto wobbly legs. She doesn't need to stand long. Once she's close enough she'll be cling so tightly to him she won't fall.]
You're here. [Her voice is rough, but the emotion is unmistakable. You were missed, Winn Schott.]
no subject
and then she's holding him and just like that all those fears evaporate and there's nothing left but kitty. kitty alive and - at least for the moment - safe in his arms. he breathes her in and his breath hitches, tears stinging in his eyes as well. ]
I'm here. [ the loaded quality of his voice reveals that it certainly isn't just another day. he presses kisses to the side of her head, the top, anywhere he can without pulling away from the hug - and then he pulls away, just a little bit, to look her in the eyes, to stroke her cheek, wipe those tears away, smile at her adoringly and with the heartbreak of knowing what she's been through. ] I love you, Katherine Reckless Abandonment Safe Anne Sexy Badass Humble Pryde.
no subject
Why didn't you wake me? [A silly question maybe, but she was in a coma an extra long time and it takes awhile to really process the situation even if all the clues are there. It might be easier to get the cliffs notes instead of trying to be a detective.]
no subject
the question gets a more somber treatment. ]
I tried, the true love's kiss thing's still a bust.
no subject
no subject
[ and they have been hard. his friends helped, though, the ones who are still here. in response to her other question, he leans in for a kiss; beats a pinch, right? when he pulls back he's gasping for air. ] What do you think?
no subject
I think our timing sucks. [She kisses him again. Lungs be damned.]
no subject
We have to work on that.
[ they could use the workout! ]
no subject
And maybe with more sitting? [Her legs still feel a little wobbly even though Winn is helping to hold her up.]
no subject
[ oh! sorry - he'll just sweep her into his arms (gotta love having the muscles to manage it!) and sit on the bed. ] Better?
no subject
Everything is better. [She doesn't just mean the sitting although that's good. She means being with him again. Not being alone. Not feeling like life is just there to cause pain. She can be brave and independent, but she wants someone to share her life with. Someone to understand her and love her. Someone to love.] I missed you so much.
no subject
[ he leans his forehead against hers. ] I missed your voice, it's not the same coming off a comm. [ yes, he's been rewatching recordings. ] I missed the way you feel. [ he didn't sleep next to her, it felt creepy - especially without knowing whether she still wanted him or not. ] And apparently - I missed my proposal. [ because he just remembered that ring. ]
no subject
no subject
[ he almost did, so many times. even before he had the ring. he always stopped himself because he wanted it to be perfect, wanted to create a special memory, something that would surpass their anniversary, that would surpass christmas, he always has to outdo himself and it's stressful and impossible and the ring kept on sitting there, unused.
she often asked him how he always says the perfect thing, does the perfect thing - well, his words are often off-the-cuff, but his actions are usually thought through. he spends months perfecting his surprises, and a proposal...it was going to be the ultimate surprise. ]
Do you...do you like it? [ yes, she's wearing it - for what it symbolizes. but he's been stressing over the ring itself for months. when he finally decided to just make it himself there was suddenly so much pressure to learn a new craft and get it just perfect and he knows kitty isn't a materialistic girl but it's her engagement ring it has to be special and it's sort of...plain. ]
no subject
Of course she's be lying if she said she didn't enjoy the things he did for her that kept outdoing himself each time. It was amazing. He was amazing. Is amazing.]
I love it. It's perfect. Where did you get it?
no subject
[ day they met was definitely too soon for him. she was probably ready before him, honestly. but once he was ready, he had to do it right.
he wiggles his fingers at her in reply. ]
After dragging Kara around to every jewelry store we could find I realized - nothing was gonna be perfect. So if it wasn't gonna be that it should at least be from the heart. So I made it.
no subject
Even if he does make her cry.
Those brown eyes are filling with tears again.] You made it? [Her voice breaks a little. Whether it's over the two months of disuse or the overwhelming nature of this revelation is hard to say. She probably should have guessed. This was the man who made her a slinky after all, and yet it always surprises her how much of himself he puts into everything even if he is talented and resourceful.]
no subject
Only the best for my...fiancee? [ he tries out the word. she's wearing the ring - he's not sure what that means though because he never asked and she never said yes. what an awkward limbo.
he kisses the top of her head and pulls her back into a tight embrace. ]
no subject
Of course, this reply might sound unrelated, but it's not. Not completely. She never expected to come back and find her with the ring. It felt like another keepsake from their time together and she's not sure what it means now that he's back either.]
no subject
too many emotions race through him and he knows that not one of them would lead anywhere good, so he continues to hold her, to stroke her hair, to let her work out her feelings. he'll adapt to them.
he wonders how soon she'll be able to part for him, cuz he sure would love a drink or 30 with jim about now. ]
no subject
Also, never. Attached forever now.]
Did you know how you were going to do it?
no subject
Nothing seemed good enough.
[ he's had ideas aplenty, sure, but he kinda shot himself in the leg with that anniversary present - it's hard to top. ]
no subject
But she notices the sound of his voice there.]
Hey... [Softly.] What's wrong?
no subject
[ they're in different places and that's hard. he doesn't know how to reassure her when he has no assurances to give. and he's scared - what happened to him all this time? he has no idea. to think that he and kitty are no longer on the same page, that he'll have to go back to not mentioning their future together, it's too hard. ]
