Just in case anyone makes it over here for whatever reason and might want to know what, exactly, I'm selling on Cafepress, here's some reminder links:

Nerd/Computer humor:

Political/Sexual:

Completely random:

These are all under the rubric of Ninth Circle, my non-existent web-design non-company.

I will make new designs on request. I'm not a great graphic artist, so I mostly do text stuff, but I can probably do some simple artwork. Of the above, at least seven were "on request" designs from other people (RiotNrrd, Land of Entrapment, I take the bus, I'm too educated, LLAMA, I abuse Internet protocols, and fingerhacked). "My girl, your girl" was inspired by a story told to me by Imagedjsparkydog, but the rest were out of my imagination.

Yes, I do usually mark up a bit from Cafepress' base prices. I'm not out to make a lot of profit, just enough to pay for my premium store (techsupporthell) and save money on Cafepress stuff for myself. Pretty much, that's what it gets me. I can pay for the store and once, just once, got a check from them for all of $30.

Yes, I will occasionally put together large orders for local peeps to save on shipping. I can also order at cheaper rates in bulk, if you're interested in selling them in person and want actual inventory.

One of two Google "How To of the Day" articles:

http://www.wikihow.com/Be-Photogenic

That one eventually lead me to:

http://www.wikihow.com/Look-Instantly-Thinner

which includes the Tip "You may still want to exercise and eat healthily. "

At least both of those are less disturbing than the one on last Wednesday, "How to Survive in Prison".

I blame Dan Savage:

He says we can make our own merch, so I did.

I thought that using an arabic/sanskrit-oid like font would be a nice touch. Lemme know if you like it. I'm working on a button design right now.

EDIT: I don't wish to discuss the politics behind this. I just try to make stuff people'll buy. And, quite honestly, people are buying this one. Go me.

I'm usually not big on politics, but sometimes I will pointedly be reminded and feel a need to say stuff. Unsurprisingly, this tends to be on the topic of sexuality.

  1. The University of New Mexico is doing human trials for a Herpes (HSV) vaccination.
They're advertising in the Alibi and so on (look for Herpevac), seeking adult women for testing of a Herpes vaccination. They are even paying you to be part of it. It's possible that they'll test you for free before admitting you to the program (so, hey, free test).
Of course, you could not rely on being in the 'live' group and possibly protected from HSV - you might be in a control group. However, your data will still be valuable to researchers saving the world from HSV.
If you're not in ABQ, there may still be a way for you to be involved: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT0005733Info%20on%20trials%20for%20possible%20Herpes%20Vaccine
    or http://www.niaid.nih.gov/dmid/stds/herpevac/default.htm
  2. Trials for a human papomilla virus (HPV) vaccination are underway/nearly done/complete.
HPV is a virus nearly as common as the common cold. It's so prevalent amongst sexually active humans that it's nearly a marker for "has had sex". Certain strains of HPV are also strongly linked to cervical cancer. A vaccine for HPV, if given to girls before they begin having sex, could prevent thousands of deaths yearly.
The phramaceuticals have developed is a vaccine for HPV which is in human trials and is doing well.
Unfortunately, religious groups are already gearing up to block widespread distribution of this vaccine, claiming that it will only encourage women to have sex. These creatures pretending to be humans may be condeming their own daughters to die, rather than take the chance that they might have sex.
  3. Free, anonymous AIDS testing is available in ABQ.
    http://www.nmas.net/cms/hivtesting.phtml
It looks like they're also doing vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B. They're also friendly, understanding, and nonpreachy.
  4. Plan B (emergency contraception) is available in New Mexico.
There are some pharmacists who refuse to fill those prescriptions, but you should be able to find a place in ABQ to get it. There is a list in one of my old LJ posts (http://anda.livejournal.com/91226.html), but it's a bit old, so I would strongly suggest calling before going.
  5. Planned Parenthood has many sexual-health services in New Mexico.
I don't need this much since I do have health insurance, but lack of insurance is no reason not to take care of your sexual health: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/ppnewmex/
  6. Abortion rights are under attack in the USA.
South Dakota recently passed a bill which would outlaw abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. I shan't recount here how incensed this makes me.
How's New Mexico on abortion rights? See: http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/choice-action-center/in_your_state/who-decides/state-profiles/new-mexico.html

It should be noted that vaccination will not work if you are already infected.

Also, I do not condone emergency contraception for general contraceptive use. It's for emergencies only. It won't protect you from STDs and is not guaranteed to prevent conception.

If you are sexually active at all, use a condom at the very least and learn how to use it right.

If the possibility of pregnancy is worrysome to you (and you're female), get on The Pill or some other form of contraception, if at all possible. The Pill won't protect you from STDs either, though.

This is the breakfast I've been making for myself, when I actually have time in the morning to make breakfast. It's fairly quick to make (though not quick enough for most work mornings, unless I get up earlier) and pretty tasty. Mostly I skip the bacon. It's also got pretty easy cleanup, since it's one small bowl, one spatula, one frying pan, one plate, one fork.i told you it was simple...Collapse )

Idle hands while socializing this weekend? A charitable organization, the Orphan Foundation of America, is collecting hand-knitted scarves and mufflers until January 31, and giving them to college-bound orphans as an act of love. Unfortunately, to get it to them in time, you'll have to be quick.

http://orphan.org/ is the overall site, and this is specifically part of the Red Scarf Project.

Details:

http://orphan.org/redscarf.htm
http://orphan.org/carepackages/RedScarfRelease01-09-2006.pdf

It says that they're accepting donations at some Einstein Bagels locations, but I'm not yet sure if any locations here in town are part of the project. I'm inquiring with the folks at orphan.org now.

EDIT: They tell me that it's all Einstein Bros. locations, so get your knit on today.

Please x-post anywhere reasonable.

Recently, I've picked up an assortment of cheap funky yarn from W-World. Yeah yeah, W-World. Yeah, yeah, acrylics. Yeah, yeah, weird ass colors. A couple months ago, I also picked up some short plastic knitting needles (size 13s) - they're clear orange! - and a set of bamboo DPNs (size 10.5s).

Over the last few weeks, I finished myself a plain old garter-stitch scarf from this grey-and-pink (the two together look kinda purple for some reason) fuzzy stuff using said new size 13s. Oh my, they were so much easier to work with than my long metal needles! Like my usual lazy self, I slacked on tucking in my ends until I found the crochet hook I got for just this purpose (unfortunately, I had forgotten I had one, so now I have two).

Over the last week, I made a narrow, short scarf - intended to be kid-sized - of the same grey-and-pink, again on the new size 13s. I haven't really got a lot of kids to give one to, but I figured it'd be quick and easy and doable with my currently crazy workload. Thursday, expecting to hopefully get that done, I tossed my metal needles and the bamboo needles and one of the balls of green fuzzy yarn in my bag. Of course, I did nothing with it.

Today, sitting on the couch, watching Too Much TV, I got them back out of the bag and went to knit. I decided that the 13s were too big for this (with such light, thin yarn, I'd have to run it with something else, or it's too lace-y), so I pulled out the metal 10.5s. I've decided that I hate hate hate the metal needles. They're too long and too slippery for what I am usually doing (namely scarves since they're easy and I don't have to remember where I am in a pattern over days and weeks between knitting). After some cursing and muttering, I decided to give the bamboo DPNs a whirl, since they were also size 10.5 and this was narrow enough that I wasn't worried about it falling off the other end.

I so wish I'd started on needles like these bamboo ones! They've got just enough friction to keep things from sliding (but no more) and they're blissfully short (they are DPNs, afterall)! The feel of working with them is just lovely. If you're interested, I got mine at the JoAnns on Wyoming/Menaul and they have both DPNs and single pointeds. The 10.5s are the largest DPNs.

On the other hand, this does remind me that I've got a working tray full of dowels which I really did mean to turn into knitting needles, before I got distracted. If anybody's familiar with wooden knitting needles, I'd appreciate some tips on finishing them ... just sand and have done? varnish? rub in a little linseed oil? I'm working primarily with hardwood dowels (though nothing quite so fine-grained as the bamboo), if that helps.

Just for giggles, I tried to keep some statistics today. I currently knit about 15 stitches a minute when I'm not distracted. On the 10.5s, I get about 1/4 inch per row (very approximate). So, on a 15-stitch wide scarf, I do about 15 inches long in an hour. Say a kid's scarf is about 45" long - that means about 3 hours of knitting. I'm a lousy knitter, so run me at $6/hour (because $5.15/hr is too much math right now), making it $18/scarf, not counting the cost of yarn or any overhead, etc. Good thing I'm not trying to make a living with this, eh?

Practical upshot - I'm willing to give my metal knitting needles to a local knitter. If you like using them, you can have em. I have sizes 8 and 10.5 and a size 8 circular (29") that I wish to dispose of. I do have some much smaller metal DPNs, but I'm not yet willing to give them away, since they seem to work ok for me.

Also, the World's Smallest Political Quiz

FWIW, I generally come up as Libertarian on this test.

Yes, I am aware that, of the times the test has been taken, a seemingly large proportion of the results seem to be Libertarians. I believe that part of this is that such a multiply dimensional representation lets people see that they can move off the left/right line/dichotomy, and that part of it is almost certainly sampling bias (this is primarily linked to from Libertarian sites, so more Libertarians are likely to take it). Take that as you will.
