[community profile] tardis_remix is running again this year, so once again I went and threw my fez into the ring for anybody who might feel like remixing one of my stories. Not sure yet if I'll write one myself, since this is a prompt-based thingy, rather than an exchange. I did enjoy doing it last year, but it'll depend on time, motivation, and whether anything leaps out and grabs me by the throat yelling, "Remix Me!"

Man, I still miss the old multi-fandom Remix (or Remix Redux, or any of the other names it went by), though. I think I'm constantly holding out hope somewhere in the back of my mind that one day it'll be back. Not enough to step forward and offer to run it myself, obviously. But still.

wychwood: Hiro has a destiny (Heroes - Hiro destiny)

Last week was all choir all the time (concert went well, but the Concerts Without A Funny Turn card goes back down to zero, annoyingly) and then I went straight into a weekend of Extreme Socialising because [personal profile] shreena and [profile] quizcustodet came up for a visit. Friday night I went out with [personal profile] shreena and A for dinner, delicious food at a Vietnamese restaurant (the marmite-and-peanut-butter-coated cauliflower was especially good!).

Saturday was my birthday treat; the Lego Discovery Centre only lets you in if you have children with you, so [personal profile] shreena and [profile] quizcustodet donated me their children and bought me a ticket to go with them *g*. I really enjoyed it; there's a mix of rides (and a big soft-play area) and a little 3D film and also a big open area where you can, you know, play with Lego. There were stations for building specific models, stations that were just buckets of Lego for you to play with, a tiny zipline where you could build little machines and see if they could make it the whole way along, a car-building area with test track, etc etc. I spent probably half an hour or so building a tiny house (with contributions from [personal profile] shreena and their older son J), which was extremely soothing.

And then on Sunday we went to Cadbury World )

All-in-all a pretty good weekend, but an inevitably exhausting one. I am now attempting to live a deeply regulated life to try and get back to normal and untrash my sleep cycle, etc etc, so we'll see how that goes...

+ There's a fun YouTube telethon/donation drive beginning in 4 and a half hours I'm strongly considering staying up for.
Why watch the State of the Union, when you could watch your favorite unhinged Bluesky posters share their weird hobbies, niche obsessions, and scorching hot takes?
(streamed here and I'm assuming directly on yt but couldn't find the link)

It's at 2.30 for me, but my sleep schedule is kind of fucked atm anyways. If I watch this and then just get up early, there's a chance I can flip it.

+ Curious Travels Tarot arrived today, and I don't think I've ever handled a deck that felt this good. I'm astounded this is mass market, it's so buttery smooth but textured at the same time; a joy to hold. I just keep fondling the cards lol.

+ In other things that bring joy: I started watching Starfleet Academy and it is full of precious characters whose faces I'd like to smoosh and keep safe forever. A bit heavy on the For Teens stuff, and sadly one character has been heavily relegated to The Girl category which I am extremely bored by, but otherwise excellent faces and much invading of personal space yay.

+ Posted some icons, yes I did!

Before Black History Month comes to a close – and with Women’s History Month ahead – I want to talk about some of my top five Black female characters in live-action TV (not necessarily characters I, as a white viewer, feel qualified to judge as Good or Bad Representation – just characters whom I enjoyed watching).

1. Zoe Washburne (Firefly)

As with most of Joss Whedon’s work – and for some extra reasons having to do with the show’s unapologetic Orientalism – I think the cultural re-evaluation of Firefly has, overall, been a good thing. I still think that Zoe was and is a standout character: capable, tough, loyal, loving, sexy and funny, in ways that balanced each other and (although at least as much credit has to go to Gina Torres as to Whedon and the writing team) made her feel like a whole and authentic person.

2. Martha Jones (Doctor Who)

In her long-running TARDIS Eruditorum project, Elisabeth Sandifer describes Martha as “the forgotten companion – the one that didn’t quite work. That’s not to say that she doesn’t have her fans and admirers, nor that those fans are wrong. But they are swimming against the tide…” Sandifer does her best to back up that thesis in her discussion of Martha’s narrative role on Doctor Who, and I don’t think she’s entirely wrong, either, but Martha is still one of my favorite characters. She’s brave and clever and adventurous, like many of the Doctor’s companions, but is also willing to push back when he’s taking her for granted, despite her doomed crush on him, and cares as much about her family on Earth as she does about her travels in other worlds. Watching her pine for the Doctor while he’s still fixated on Rose is sometimes frustrating,, but that makes her choice to walk away from the TARDIS on her own terms – after traveling over a post-apocalyptic earth and laughing in the face of the near-omnipotent being who tried to take it over – is deeply satisfying.

3. Lynn Stewart (Black Lightning)

I love all the members of the Pierce-Stewart family, but – even based upon the season and change of Black Lightning that I’ve seen – I really appreciated the direction that the show took Lynn’s character. Not only was she the civilian partner of a superhero, and the non-powered parent of super-powered children, who knew about her family’s abilities (instead of being kept in the dark like many wives and girlfriends in this genre), but she had an entire storyline that wasn’t primarily about her husband but about her, her medical expertise, and her relationships with other supers and a morally ambiguous scientific colleague. I would definitely love to finish the show at some point soon, and even if something infuriating happens to Lynn in the episodes that I haven’t seen yet, she’ll always have had that.

4. Monica Rambeau (WandaVision)

Monica was first introduced as an adorable child in the Captain Marvel movie. WandaVision revisits her as an adult re-acclimating to her life after Thanos’s Snap (which happened in another movie that I did not watch, but I understand the basic gist) was reversed. I like how she’s integrated into the story, first as a victim of Wanda’s illusion and then as one of the people investigating it, grieving but still determined. I agree with the observation in this video essay that her motivations and moral compass – both of which were very sympathetic – started to fall apart toward the end as it became more evident where the show’s sympathies were weighted,, but she’s a wonderful character up until that point.

5. Spanish Jackie (Our Flag Means Death)

Whether her character was collecting husbands or noses, Leslie Jones stole every scene that she was in. No notes.

Characters whom I considered listing include Amanita Caplan (Sense8), Aisha Robinson (Cobra Kai), Bonnie Bennett (The Vampire Diaries), and Viv (Sex Education).

And I'm getting paid for every last one of them, including the 6 hours when the house slept and so did I. Normally, we're not actually supposed to sleep on an overnight shift - but almost everybody really does, so it's more like "don't get caught" - but c'mon.

For everybody at home, leaving without a replacement is not simply a fireable offense but an actual, factual crime. Also, I'm not sure how I would've gotten to the bus. I mean, it's right outside the door, and buses were running all night, but man, it was brutal out there. We needed a little shoveling, and neither I nor manager wanted to shovel, so we had to wait for the neighbors to get their sidewalks and then sorta patch us into theirs. (The transportation issue is also why I'm not blaming any coworkers who didn't come in. It was impossible. I genuinely don't think that this was a fixable issue, Staten Island got a lot of snow.)

In retrospect, what probably ought to have been done would have had to have been done in advance:

1. Manager should've taken as much discretionary money as possible, agreed to let staff order Chinese or whatever for two, three meals - something that reheats nicely - and offered to pay all our carfare home in advance, and then used that to straight up bribe at least one extra staff member to stay over the storm. With three of us, we could've had one on each floor and also could've more easily arranged sleeping shifts so somebody was awake at all times.

2. She also should've called up the families of those residents who frequently go home for an overnight and asked if they'd take their relatives from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. That's suboptimal for a lot of reasons - there's a reason they all live in a residence instead of with their families! - but it would've lightened the burden on us significantly if we'd had even just our two or three easiest residents away visiting their sisters and brothers.

But we all survived! My replacement actually showed up at midnight last night! But she declined to wake me on the grounds that I wasn't going home at midnight, and she was quite right. And then another staff member showed up this morning, and 90 or 100 minutes later my bus finally showed up. (And yes, I do insist on getting paid for that last hour and a half as well. I wasn't just sitting around, I was doing laundry, and supervising on the basement so that everybody else could handle the upper floors, and walking the guys out to their van so nobody slipped on ice.)

I'm home now, I showered, and I have the rest of the week off, off, off. Yay me!

If this happens again, I'm bringing a change of clothing.

It snowed until around 3 pm today! Just...so much snow. Friend L sent me a pic from her building in Manhattan and it was like the storm had barely had an impact, yet by me, even though the street had been plowed, it was all snowy again. Anyway, thankfully, my boss is also under about 2 ft of snow out on the island, so we are not going in tomorrow (the person who was supposed to come meet with us had their flight cancelled, so they never even made it to NY, so that will all get rescheduled, too). Whew.

Anyway, have some brief thoughts on recent TV:

- Shrinking: spoilers ) This show remains hilarious and endearing.

- Pluribus: I finished it and I don't love it but I am interested in seeing where it goes. spoilers )

- The Pitt: spoilers )
