They had chased him, sirens blaring, from one state into another and even into a third. It had all started when one of their men had witnessed the driver run over a pedestrian. The first had been a single, elderly lady, but many others had swiftly followed. They'd thought they'd had him cornered several times, but each time, the car had spun in circles, knocked other vehicles out of its way, and kept zooming.
The government was considering sending a tank, but how much damage could one little car do? Captain Stuartz did not want to know. She had seen too many good men and women killed in the wrecks this insane driver had created. There had been many other "casualities" as well, from all three of the affected states. Though they had been officers she had never met, she did not relish having to tell their families, and although the government was coming with reinforcements that the lone car could not possibly beat, she knew it would take time for them to arrive on scene. How many more would die in the interim? Far too many, but then, to Captain Felicia Stuartz, even one life was too many. "We've got to stop him."
"How, Sarge?!"
"Shouldn't we just wait for reinforcements?" squeaked an obvious rookie.
"And what? Have more civilians killed? Have more officers killed?! No! This stops now!" She swung her car in front of the other one. Of all the Halloween nights, this had been the craziest one she'd worked by far. "Let him get through me!"
"Sarge!"
That motivated her men. Suddenly, they were coming at the car from all sides. The killer's tires spun and engine revved as he tried to find an open spot between them, but as they crowded him against the railing, they left no open avenue. The only other route the car had open to it was over the railing and into the churning, ocean waves below. He couldn't be that stupid, Felicia thought with a smirk.
He zoomed suddenly, but her cars stood strong and still. He backed up and then zoomed again, but they still kept their places. None of them would back down, and she knew each car by heart. She knew each driver who was behind the wheels, and not just by their names and faces. She knew their families. She had spoken at several of their children's schools, given one of the younger ones away to his wife, and played the role of bride's maid for young, female cop who had no one beyond the force.
Each one would be a loss that would not only pierce Felicia's heart but would hurt their entire community. But they stood their ground until, upon the fifth time of the vehicle swiftly backing away, it backed over the side of the bridge. The driver's door opened. Felicia jumped out of her car and aimed her gun at him, but there was something different about him. She'd never seen anyone look so white or pale. She could see the moonlight shining through his body.
She kept her gun trained but then, upon realizing his scheme, shouted out. "NO!" She raced forward, but it was too late as the driver jumped into the ocean. They'd fish him out and hopefully be in time. She turned toward the car to see that one of her men was already trying to disengage the engine. "It's a Tesla," he called. Just then, the car took off, all four of its doors flapping.
Her man had rolled out of the way of the vehicle just in time, but Felicia's was not the only gun firing. They'd already flattened two tires hours prior, but the thing had kept going somehow. With their bullets meeting their homes and the car being left with no tires, however, it was finally stopped. She kept her gun trained as she walked up to it and kicked the driver door further open.
There wasn't a body to be found, not in the car itself nor in that section of the ocean no matter how thoroughly they investigated. It took a day before Felicia finally found the face that had looked so familiar. "Huh," she commented.
"What is it, Sarge?"
Instead of answering, she turned off her computer and grabbed for her jacket. "I think I'm going for Chinese. Who wants to join me?" She'd never tell another living soul that that driver she had seen jump to his presumed death the night before had already been dead for forty years.
The End
