She shouldn't be just a Key! Dawn thought fiercely. Tears poured down her face. She rocked herself back and forth, her arms tightly wrapped around herself. Her face buried in her knees. To any passersby, she'd appeared to be just another teenager having an emotional crisis, but her life was so much more, and so much more terrible, than that!
But of course, that was the thing, wasn't it? She was alive! She hadn't asked for it, but she was living and breathing flesh and emotions! She had a mind and heart of her own!
Of course, another thing that was different, her brain's logical side warned, was the fact that she was foolishly having this meltdown in the middle of a cemetery. Passersby in Sunnydale knew very well what a welcoming meal she'd make.
Dawn didn't jump at the sudden, savage growl that burst through the empty air. Instead, she looked up, through blurry eyes, to see Spike throwing himself at a group of Vampires. She sniffled and tried to wipe the tears from her eyes in case he needed help. There was somebody who knew she was more than just a stupid key: her very best friend.
