This work is for a challenge over at Lands of Magic, and is the way they SHOULD do the sequel IMNSHO...

Many girls went through the labyrinth, but there was one who stood out amongst the rest. There was one who had really been meant to become the King's Queen and Queen in all his lands. There was one who never stopped regretting the decisions she made, decisions she'd felt forced to make in order to save her baby brother and preserve his life, and who never stopped looking for a way back to the labyrinth. She solved many randoms mysteries, puzzles, and crimes that would have quite possibly otherwise gone unresolved if not for her determination and the odd books, acquaintances, and other helpers she had along her way to becoming one of the head detectives in her little city.

All of those skills are about to finally come in truly handy when Detective Sarah Williams gets the chance she's been waiting for her entire life. Instead of finding the labyrinth, however, it comes to her, its subjects crying out for help as the magical, underground kingdom is being overran by enemies who want the throne and its power for their own, others who want to do with the magical creatures living there as they choose (all horrible things to benefit them), and all but completely overtaken with chaos in the wake of the mysterious disappearance of the Goblin King who's never once stopped haunting Sarah's dream.

Determined to reclaim her chance not just to become the Goblin Queen but moreover to become Jareth's wife and prove her love and allegiance to him once and for all, Sarah doesn't hesitate to go back to the underground... but she doesn't realize until she gets there that she has two stowaways, a pickpocket thief who had been eyeing the plain clothes detective's bracelet and her baby brother, who's no longer a baby and just as determined to see, and to save, this land his crazy, older sister has been babbling about for years.

It's bothered me since I heard that they are finally making official plans to do a sequel to the Labyrinth, and I know I'm not the only one. My husband, for one, who isn't nearly as big a fan of Bowie and the Labyrinth as I am has sworn he will absolutely sign off of TV if they disrespect Bowie in any way. To him, this would mean recasting Jareth AT ALL, and to a certain extent, I can agree with this. However, I also see a way that Jareth can be handled wonderfully and true to character, Bowie honored throughout the entire film (or TV series), and Jareth NOT be recast. How, you ask? Well, of course, dear reader, you're going to have to read to find out! ;)

Many of the same characters with whom we fell in love with must be at least mentioned in the reboot. Sarah, Toby, Hoggle, Ludo, and Didymus will all be there. Worm's there, too, and the Fieries will be seen in a way they've never been seen before! The little Goblin who was seen shining Jareth's boots in the movie will also feature more prominently. There will be other new characters too.

However, what, to a lot of us fans, made Labyrinth so wonderful and dream-worthy was the King himself, played masterfully and magnificently by the one and only David Bowie who sadly is no longer with us. Failing to do justice to his character, attempting to do any kind of recast, would be a great dishonor to Bowie and anger a majority of the fan base Hollywood and its cohorts count on with these reboots. Another cannot take the throne either unless it's Sarah or Toby, but then, we fans also don't want to see Jareth die.

Clearly there is a great dilemma here, so how to handle it? How do you make the Labyrinth without Jareth, without Bowie, and not decimate the very thing that made the first so wonderful? The answer is simple, I think, but also not simple, and I'm pretty certain it's never been done before, which just seems to make it a more fitting tribute to our beloved Bowie. Jareth cannot be in the show -- that's for certain --, but he can communicate with the characters (and watchers) -- by David Bowie's songs, clips, lines, and entire songs! He cannot seen, but he can certainly still sing!

1. King Jareth, as voiced by David Bowie Image
The great Goblin King has gone missing. His health had been failing before he vanished, but only a very select few are aware of those details. Despite being feared, Jareth was actually also loved by his subjects for several reasons, including that he was their one protection against all the other, meaner creatures underground. There are layers upon layers of different worlds in the underground, and the Goblins had no protection until they stole a baby boy who grew up to be their protector. Jareth always wanted to escape, but the spell that was used to take him meant that the only way he could free himself was by having someone to take his place. He had many girls pass through his labyrinth, but only one took, and kept, his heart.

2. Detective Sarah Williams, as played by Charisma Carpenter Image
Sarah's whole world was changed when she found out that her favorite book growing up was actually not a work of fiction. Encountering Goblins, Fairies, and Dwarves changed her entire life and the way through which she looked at everything in her world, but most of all, meeting their King, being courted by their King, changed her inside and out. Some would even say that it ruined her, at the tender age of 15, for any other man she would ever meet.

The other cops on her force certainly have no idea of the reason why none of them can attract Sarah. They all think she's married to her work, but what nobody but her baby brother, for whom she gave up the opportunity of a lifetime, knows is that she has been married since fifteen -- married in her heart to the King whose attempts to woo her she had been forced to deny in order to save her brother and married to her lifelong mission of finding the one man who's touched every part of her and finally finding a way to accept the fantasy world he offered her.

3. Toby Williams, as played by Shawn Ashmore Image
Toby was far too young to remember the Goblin City or any of its beings, but he has heard about them his entire life from his big sister, Sarah. He's also fought to keep her from being institutionalized for most of their lives for her beliefs until, as they both grew older, Sarah finally learned to say she had only imagined it all and her mind was better. She still talks to him about it, however, and not only when she's overly tired from her police work or drunk. Toby's grown tired of hearing the fantasy tales and of how much she gave up and did in trying to protect him, especially since he was only a baby and she did offer him up to this "Goblin King" to begin with!

There have been times when Toby's heard things scurrying about in the shadows. Sarah always says it's the Goblins, but he knows better. There's mice and spiders and every sort of imaginable, explainable creature... until there's not, until he and Sarah are face to face late one night in a dark alley with a Goblin, a Dwarf who's grouchy that he's been called out of his retirement, and a Knight who looks far more like a dog. Then, and only then, does Toby stop thinking his sister is crazy and suddenly wants to know everything about the kingdom he could have ruled.

4. Glitter, pickpocket character, as played by Storm Reid Image
Glitter's earliest memories are of an orphanage. She has never been able to find her family, and she's convinced she doesn't need them. She was left on the orphanage's steps in a baby blanket that was far fancier, almost like gossamer wings, than anything the nuns running it had seen previously. She grew up a beautiful, graceful child, but she would have episodes that the nuns thought were some kind of mania.

Every time she would be placed in a home, things would be fine... until they weren't, until she was caught literally climbing the walls or hanging on the precipice of the roof or a windowsill. She's had dreams of flying with big wings, sometimes snowy white, sometimes translucent, her entire life, but of course, these too never set well with her adopted families or the convent. Eventually, the girl called Glitter, which was the name inscribed in bold, shimmering, and golden thread on her baby blanket, got wise and ran away from one of her foster homes and the system. She's been on her own, living off the streets and the "kindness" of others, ever since.

There's a pretty woman with long, dark hair who's often slipped her peaches and apples when seeing her on the street. Glitter knows the woman is financially stable, and sometimes she wears jewelry that attracts her. She's following her on one such night, her attention on a bracelet on her wrist, when the craziest creatures she's ever seen step out of the shadows to talk to the woman and a guy who Glitter knows must be some kind of family or friend as she's never seen them do anything romantic. She's never seen such creatures as the Dwarf and Knight before, but there's something about the old, green-skinned lady that's awfully familiar...

5. Cassian, Hoggle's nephew, as played by Danny Woodburn Image
Cassian's parents were killed in a raid by the Dark Elves, one of many times the Elves had attempted to overthrow King Jareth and take the splendors to be found within the Goblin City's walls for their own. Rumor has it that this particular raid was caused by the Goblin King turning away the reigning Princess of the Dark Elves, but few only know if it is true or not. One such person who has always been one of the King's top confidantes and spies is Cassian's own uncle, Hoggle, who took him in after his parents' deaths, but Hoggle refuses to talk to him about it or anything that happened before the retirement he took to raise Cassian.

When Jareth goes missing, Hoggle actually comes out of retirement long enough to go to the above world for help, but once he's back into the kingdom where they belong, he's immediately back to not wanting to do anything to help, anything even remotely related to work. Hoggle has long been rumored to be lazy and far too much in liking with the berry wines that flow through the kingdoms. Cassian has also had to fight his uncle in some of his drunken stupors. Such bouts have made Cassian wonder even more about just what all his uncle has done for their King, but Hoggle still refuses to talk about it -- or to do anything further to help Jareth. With his uncle stepping down when the kingdom needs them the most, Cassian decides to take matters into his own hands, stealing Hoggle's keys to the oubliettes and what all else the younger Dwarf does not yet know and slipping away while his uncle is asleep to join the party searching, and hoping to rescue if need be, their beloved King.

6. Worm, as voiced by Nick Bakay Image
Worm may not be the absolute smallest citizen of the Labyrinth, but he is certainly the one who is least known by the other creatures running rampant in the King's stead and also those trying to find and rescue, if need be, their beloved King. Worm keeps mostly to himself, or at least he has until now. No one knows King Jareth's hiding spots as well as little Worm does for Worm often traveled in Jareth's pocket. He and Jareth shared many confidences, and hiding spots, and in fact, King Jareth was one of Worm's only two trusted friends, his wife being the other one.

Worm has always been a homebody since the prejudice he received for being the only wyrm who did not transform when he came of age. He was not meant to be a butterfly but a dragon, but his transformation never came. The pain he receives from the other wyrms' hatred and ridicule made him want to spend time only with Jareth and his Missus, but now that the King is missing, little Worm is determined to do all he can to save the King. He's left his nice, warm hole and is traveling in Toby's pocket while trying to convince Sarah, who (if she's honest, which she isn't with the group when it comes to her feelings for the legendary Goblin King) doesn't actually need all that much convincing, that she was always intended to be the rightful Queen and rule beside their King and find Jareth. Worm is also equally determined that he shall see the wedding of the century between King Jareth and Queen Sarah before he passes from this world.

7. Sir Didymus, as voiced by Will Friedle Image
Sir Didymus has always been the labyrinth's most loyal and courageous Knight. His assignment to the Bog of Eternal Stench was believed by many to be a punishment, but he was set there for a couple of reasons. It was a necessary position for someone of the Royal Four Sidekicks, Jareth's special group, to be for when the girl of the moment inevitably found herself trapped therein, and the Bog made the perfect place for whence from enemies to sneak into the kingdom.

Didymus has served Jareth loyally for well over a hundred years -- his confrontation, as well as Hoggle's and Ludo's, is merely part of the play through which the entire kingdom goes every time a girl enters the labyrinth --, but during this time, he has never had a life of his own. He has also never met anyone who would match him in all the ways he desires a sutior or, rather, suitee. His secret hope, as they travel through the kingdoms in search of the King, is that he will also find the one who has evaded him so long, his own fair maiden.

He, too, is convinced that Sarah is the one who got away and is determined to do anything he can to see her and Jareth not only reunite but wed and rule together over the kingdom. She is just the one his King needs, Sir Didymus knows, in all the meanings of the phrase.

8. Princess Verbena, Dark Elf Princess, as played by Sofia Vergara Image
There are many beauties in the underground kingdoms -- and many uglies, Hoggle would tell you with a wink --, but the most ruthless, deceitful, conspiring, and fiercest of all the females is Princess Verbena of the Dark Elves. She wields great magic, but her greatest magics are in the seductive, sultry use of her body and her cunning, deceitful tongue. She has always believed the Dark Elves were wrongly cast as such and that they should be revered by all. Likewise, she has oft felt as though she does not receive proper recognition for the fantastic beauty she is.

Verbena is a great punisher and has been sending men to their deaths since she was a little girl. Everyone from teachers and playmates to Viziers and other Council people have been punished for not treating her the way she feels she should be treated. She, after all, is the next generation of Dark Elven Royalty and will be the greatest ruler their people have ever seen. It is well known in her kingdom that to meet her gaze, when she does not wish it met, is death -- but a crueler death awaits any who dare look away from her.

Verbena has made many attempts at assassinating her parents, eager to wear her father's crown and her mother's royal jewels, but she came to realize that she can actually wield her parents and rule from behind the scenes. She wooed King Jareth at one point, as did many of the females throughout the kingdoms, but she has been bent on destroying the Goblin Kingdom and all Jareth holds dear ever since he failed to propose marriage and even had the audacity to show surprise when she asked him to be loyal to her. That was what led to the bloodiest war between the Dark Elves and the Goblins, but now that their King is gone, the Kingdom lays open once again.

Verbena, however, is not certain that Jareth is dead, and she has decided to play her games wisely this time, especially as the last time she only lived because of the Goblin King's startling mercy. She still does not know what moved Jareth to allow her to keep her life, not knowing that he owed her father a debt from hundreds of years prior. Until she's certain he's dead, she will play the forlorn, grieving widower while all the time plotting her revenge. If he is dead, she firmly believes the kingdom is as good as hers.

9. Lady Mya, Light Elf Princess, as played by Candace Cameron Bure Image
While the Dark Elves are focused on war and obtaining access to the above world and all its technologies, the Light Elves are just the opposite. They are of the Air and Water while their cousins, the Dark Elves, are of the earth and fire. They focus on healing and spreading peace, love, and healing everywhere they go.

Yet, like almost every species in the underground kingdoms, their women too have been touched by the great King Jareth. Mya loved Jareth, but she always loved him enough to see that his heart truly belonged to another, to the girl named Sarah with whom she finally comes face to face when she opens the barriers for Jareth's Royal Four Sidekicks to attempt their one possible connection with the above world. They had hoped to find some trace of Jareth in the higher land with which he had so often been besotted, but instead they found that the girl their King never forgot has also never forgotten him.

Now Mya's heart hurts every time she looks at the girl and thinks of her beloved loving the mere mortal, but as much as it hurts her, she realizes that Jareth's true soul mate is their best chance of finding the King. She also recognizes their greatest foes has already entered the kingdom in the form of the Dark Elf Princess Verbena. Determined to keep his people safe in Jareth's stead, Mya sets about helping his true love and subjects on their mission to find him, all while guarding them as best she can against Verbena and her trickery.

10. Trely, as played by Linda Hunt Image
Trely is the oldest and most often over-looked Goblin, but there was one who never over-looked her for long. As the oldest of the Goblins, caring for the youth has always fallen to her, and she was the one to rock King Jareth's cradle. Afterward she became the Shiner of His Royal Boots.

There isn't much the small, old Goblin understands, but she does know she loves her King with a love far beyond what most subjects would feel for their monarch. He is the closest she's ever had to an actual son as Goblins don't give birth but simply appear out of pockets of hot air, and she is the only thing he's known as any kind of a parent figure, or any kind hand to help him when he was practically raising himself. She also knows she misses her King dearly and will give anything, and do anything, to have him back -- unless he's in that dreaded, awful upper world where to which he plans to one day forever escape from herself and the other small brains like hers. He escapes there far too often like it is, but something tells her he's not in the above world at all. He's somewhere underground, and he needs their help quite dreadfully.

11. The Referee of the Revolting Fieries, as voiced by Marilyn Manson Image
The Fiery Goblins, often referred to simply as Fieries, have never been named. They have never been very smart. They have never been tamed. Worst of all, they have never been free for they have always been held back by the rules the King put into place. None of them understand how Jareth got to be the King, but they all know better than to upset him.

Now, however, with the King gone and no one there to punish them for partying too hard, a Fiery who's particularly angry, and exceptionally intelligent, has learned a great way to vent his frustrations is by taking off the heads of others. It may be against the rules, but it's great fun, and with no King to bring their partying down, who cares what's against the rules? It's even more fun to keep the head away from the being to which it belongs, or destroy it all together! He's found that creatures will do anything to get their heads back, and he's already become the richest, most powerful Fiery in the land simply by holding heads for ransom.

No one dares tell him no now, which is something he knows will end the moment Jareth returns. This is why he and his group are determined to keep having as much fun as they can while they find a way to make certain the King never returns.

All of the above would be leading spots in commercials, brief commercials, flyers, posters, and magazine ads. But then we also have two unique items that would be put into circulation over night, one into currency as people were told it was a new gold dollar coin and the other just being randomly passed out in the streets, at comic cons, and other such places.

1. Underground
But down in the underground
You'll find someone true
Down in the underground
A land serene
A crystal moon
Ah

It's only forever
Not long at all
Lost and lonely
That's underground
Underground

2. Under Pressure
Pressure: pushing down on me
Pressing down on you, no man ask for
Under pressure that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets
That's OK
That's the terror of knowing
What this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming
"Let me out!"
Tomorrow gets me higher
Pressure on people, people on streets

3. Putting Out Fire (with Gasoline)
See these eyes so green
I can stare for a thousand years
Colder than the moon
It's been so long

Feel my love enraged
It's just the fear of loosing you
Don't you know my name
You've been so long

And I've been putting out fire
With gasoline

4. Magic Dance
I saw my baby
Crying hard as babe could cry
What could I do?
My baby's love had gone

And left my baby blue
Nobody knew

What kind of magic spell to use
Slime and snails or puppy dog tails
Thunder or lightning then baby said

5. Thursday's Child
Sometimes I cried my heart to sleep
Shuffling days and Lonesome nights
Sometimes my courage fell to my feet

Lucky old sun is in my sky
Nothing prepared me for your smile
Lighting the darkness of my soul
Innocence in your arms
(Oh-neh don' go)

6. When I Live My Dream
When I live my dream, I'll take you with me
Riding on a golden horse
We'll live within my castle, with people there to serve you
Happy at the sound of your voice

Baby, I'll slay a dragon for you
Or banish wicked giants from the land
But you will find, that nothing in my dream can hurt you
We will only love each other as forever
When I live my dream

When I live my dream, I'll forgive the things you've told me
And the empty man you left behind
It's a broken heart that dreams, it's a broken heart you left me
Only love can live in my dream

7. Within You
How you turn my world
You precious thing
You starve and near exhaust me

Everything I've done
I've done for you
I move the stars for no one

8. Chilly Down
When the sun goes down (when the sun goes down)
And the bands are back to back (and the bands are back)
The brothers come round (the brothers come round)
I get out of my dirty bed (my dirty bed)
I shake my pretty little head (shake my pretty little head)
Tap my pretty little feet (tap my pretty little feet)
Feelin' brighter than sunlight
Louder than thunder
Dancin' like a yo-yo (woo!)

9. Survive
Where's the morning in my life?
Where's the sense in staying right?
Who said time is on my side?
I've got ears and eyes and nothing in my life
But I'll survive your naked eyes
I'll survive

You alone across the floor
You and me and nothing more
You're the great mistake I never made
I never lied to you, I hated when you lied
And I'll survive your naked eyes
I'll survive

10. As the World Falls Down
There's such a fooled heart
Beatin' so fast
In search of new dreams
A love that will last
Within your heart
I'll place the moon
Within your heart

As the pain sweeps through
Makes no sense for you
Every thrill is gone
Wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you-ou-ou
As the world falls down

Falling
As the world falls down
Falling
Falling in love

11. Wild is the Wind
Love me, love me, love me, love me
Say you do
Let me fly away with you
For my love is like the wind
And wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

Give me more than one caress
Satisfy this hungriness
Let the wind blow through your heart
For wild is the wind
Wild is the wind

Merchandise would come, as it already does for Labyrinth, in an array of items. First and most common would be the T-shirts, images that could also be emblazoned on a variety of other items from jackets to tattoo sleeves and socks and everything in between.

ImageImageImageImage

As with any fandom, there will be plushies and dolls.

ImageImageImageImage

This IS a Jim Henson creation after all, so there will be puppets too.

ImageImage

This includes, sold is very exclusive adult entertainment shops, puppets of Jareth, but sadly I have no pictures of those to share. :(

There will also be a re-release of these fine statues along with an elaborate chess board where a smaller rendition of the statue of Sir Didymus below serves as the Knight pieces:

ImageImage

Along with that elaborate chessboard, there will be a re-release of this seldomly heard of board game:

Image

There will, of course, be items geared towards men and women including some of the below jewelry for women and a cologne especially made for men. This cologne will have its scents chosen by none other than Iman herself as it is meant to closely resemble the King's aroma so as to pull all unsuspecting damsels in distress, especially those with annoying baby brothers, to the men wearing it.

It is also worth noting that the first button below will also be a campaign item, slipped into the unsuspecting hands of the people on the street, at comic cons and Ren faires, and other places all around the world starting approximately a week, perhaps two, before the first commercials air.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

There will be rarer jewelry pieces as well such as the below locket that will be done as both a rare pocket watch and a locket with It's Only Forever inscribed inside and removable pictures of Jareth and Sarah -- removable so that the wearer may place a picture of him/herself inside opposite a picture of their soul mate.

Image

Another of the rarer jewelry items whose fashion will double into other items is the following ring. Not only a ring, it will also be the top of a table whose legs are inscribed with various characters and scenes from the Labyrinth (and which is worth a small fortune!) and topped with the actual crystal ball. There will be a crystal ball by itself such as a Magic 8 ball, and there will be a crystal ball with the owl sitting on it as below that serves as a sort of telly set -- but only for the Labyrinth movies and David Bowie music videos!

Image

Along with the crystal ball table/DVD player, there will be several other household items fashioned in the images of Jareth and the others from the Labyrinth including but certainly not limited to:
