Spike bolted upright. If he'd had a heart, it would have been pounding. As it was, his eyes quickly scanned the room. The curtains were drawn closed, no danger of the sun sneaking in to catch him unawares. The world wasn't ending. The earth wasn't even shaking! No one lay about him dying.
He bit back a shudder as he remembered. He had been in some kind of ridiculous medieval getup with a bloody winged helmet on his head no less! But the fasion disasters had been far from the things most concerning. Everyone he cared about had been dying, all but one. Giles had been in some kind of crazy, bright armor with only his head showing, breathing his last. Willow had had no access to her magic and had not even been her evil version from the first doppelgangland they had come across, despite being dressed in black leather tighter than Faith's. Faith had not shown, but Angel had been there, in some kind of star spangled suit with what Spike could only assume had once been his shield smashed into his (dyed) blonde head. Xander had, oddly enough, been the strongest of the group, and he had been lost when Dawn, no bigger than a gnat, had been smashed in his hands when his anger had erupted.
Spike had not been able to save them. Though lightning seemed to flash and thunder to roar with his every racing thought and attempted deed, he had not been fast enough to save any of them. But then she had come. Something had prophesied her arrival, a note in the rumbling thunder or perhaps something on the rising wind, and Spike had turned to see her literally flying, some kind of giant hammer held in her hand, to his rescue.
"Odd dream," he muttered, but nonetheless he had to smile at the figure sleeping soundly beside him. He reached out and caressed her bare shoulder sticking out from underneath the black, silk sheets upon which he had insisted. Buffy murmured in her sleep and smiled but did not wake. Probably for the best, he thought. He definitely didn't want to have to explain this dream to her!
He'd had stranger dreams, but it had been quite some time. With Buffy now sleeping beside him, he had not had an actual nightmare in months now. The heat was rising in the room. Spike slipped from the bed, padded over, and turned on the air conditioner. He walked next to the window, but Buffy had made certain no sunlight would slip into their room. He could still feel the heat of the day and recognized it wouldn't be much longer before Dawn would be released from school.
He had to smile as he thought of the kid. "Bloody Nibblet," he muttered though fondly. She was no doubt the reason for his dreams, as crazed as they were. It was those Avengers movies she so enjoyed. He thought they were silly codswallop, but she liked them and he did so enjoy doing things with her.
Spike padded back to bed and slipped back underneath the covers. This time, Buffy did stir. "Spike?" She still wasn't awake, but he nonetheless froze and stayed still for several long minutes until she snored softly again.
Only then did he take her into his arms, kiss her soft, blonde hair, and whisper into her ear, "Hush, pet. You can save everybody tonight. Sleep now." She did save them all, so at least that made sense. She was their chief heroine. She was the greatest hero they had ever and would ever be. She was his world, and she saved him every time she smiled at him, every time she loved him...
Yeah, maybe he didn't like the idea of playing Thor, but it made perfect sense that he would be and that she would be his mate. They belonged together, and she truly was the brightest hero of them all, always out to save every one of them. He held her tenderly and watched over her as she slept, glad that their sleeping together had finally eased her nightmares too.
