"Why are you doing this?" Xander asked.
Cordelia wanted to scream, but instead she tried to hush them both by sucking his tongue into her mouth and deepening their series of kisses. Only this dork could still talk with her tongue down his throat! She knew exactly what he was asking, and she did not want to think about it.
But Xander, never one known for his intelligence when dealing with girls, wrestled his lips free enough to ask again, "Why are you doing this, Cordy? I'm a zero. Why are you -- "
"Because just maybe I like you, Xander Harris!" Cordelia snapped, fire in her hazel eyes. Maybe I actually like you, Xander, and maybe I like that you like me for me not for my popularity or my money! Maybe you make me feel safe! Maybe you make me feel wanted! But she didn't say any of that. Instead she gripped his collar tighter, jerked him closer, and kissed him harder.
"But -- But --"
"Xander, you have the hottest girl in school risking her reputation by necking with you in some stupid lockers! Did you ever stop to think that maybe you should just shut up and thank God for how lucky you are and just keep kissing me?!"
Xander shrugged, but he let Cordelia take over as he usually did. She was more experienced and knew far better than he did in these sorts of things. Besides she was right: he was incredibly lucky to have her. The fact that that was exactly why he wanted to know why she was doing that didn't really matter, at least for now. He wasn't about to spoil a good thing, and Cordelia Chase was the best he'd ever had or, he was quite certain, would ever have!
He deepened the kiss and tried something he'd seen only in the movies before. He wrapped his arms around her, hoping they actually felt strong, picked her up and whirled her around as best ge was able to in the right confines of his locker. He felt her smile against his tongue and lips and knew he'd succeeded in pleasing her.
Thank God, Cordy thought with a moan, she'd actually shut him up! They didn't need to think about this thing between them. Overthinking only ever ruined a good thing, and Xander, as much of a dork as he was, was the best she'd ever had. He treated her like the Queen she was, but also stood up to her when it mattered the most. He knew her pleasure and happiness came first.
Best of all, he cared for her for her, and he was the only person in her life who'd ever made her feel safe. She didn't know how he did it sometimes. His puny body certainly couldn't hold up to a Vampire or even a jock, but he never failed to try. He'd stepped between her and many a Vamp and always had a smart word. Clinging together, their kiss deepened.
