"Oh, it's you."
Spike wasn't surprised at Angel's nonplussed reaction, not tonight of all nights. The sky seemed to be weeping earlier. It had been so gray out that he'd actually been able to watch the entire ceremony, a sight that had broke whatever heart he might have gained with his soul. His useless, pointless soul. He'd given the girl everything he could, gone through literal Hell and back to get things he'd never thought he would have again all in a futile attempt of trying to make himself worthy of her. But she'll never love him, just like she'll never love the Great Poof again.
Angel looked even worse than Spike did, and Spike had been drinking blood, wine, rum, beer and anything else he'd been able to procure all day long. Hell, he'd been on a bender since the engagement had been announced. Not that it had really helped with any of the pain.
"We could fight."
Spike blinked. He was genuinely surprised at Angel's suggestion. "What th' bloody Hell for?" he slurred. "It ain't gonna do any good. It ain't gonna change again. An' face it, Poof, if we really wanted the other dead, we would've killed each other centuries ago. Long before the Slayer. Long before -- " He waved his hand around at the gray, looming buildings of London. " -- all this."
Angel paused. He look a long, hard look at the man beside him and swiftly realized that the whelp was as broken as he was, inside and out. He shook his head slowly. "She did a number on us all right."
"No, luv and stupidity did."
Angel turned his gaze in the direction of where they both knew Buffy and her new husband was spending their honeymoon. "How long do you think he'll last?"
"Long enough."
