[ Telepathy is the strangest feeling Thomas has ever encountered -- not that he's really felt anything other than heat, but this is something else all together. It's mental, it's in his brain, it's noticing Teresa's presence when she isn't around -- it's feeling lonely, sad, when she's not in his head, in his every waking thought. He finds that when they aren't together ( a rarity ), he's longing for her, reaching in the dark abyss of his brain to grab her, with a talent he's nowhere near perfected yet.
Practice takes up a good chunk of the day, Thomas and Teresa sitting on the bed in their shared room, occasionally hearing Aris and Rachel hitting the wall from the room beside them, Morse code messages since their telepathy isn't perfected just yet either. Sometimes it bothers Thomas, since it's never just him and Teresa and he doesn't want to waste a second for time together -- mainly, though, it makes him happy. Because they're doing a good thing, maybe, they're saving the world, and all Thomas has to do is master this little trick.
Can yo... me? he tries, facing Teresa and holding her fingers in his own, twisting them around and analyzing them, like they're the most interesting things in the world. Teresa is soft, he always finds himself thinking, for such a strong, tough lady. It's a wonderful contrast, and he smiles at her, lacing their fingers.
[ Teresa embraces the telepathy the same as she embraces everything else she's received from WCKD - with an open mind and fierce determination. she picks up on it fast because she trusts their mission completely, trusts that whatever they decide to have her and Tom learn is for the greater good, that it must be done. she read every bit of explanation they offered over and over again, but nothing could really prepare her for how it feels to be connected to someone in this way, especially someone she already cared about so much. waiting for him to learn isn't really like sitting by the phone waiting for a call, but standing at the edge of a cliff with her hands stretched wide, telling him to jump, to come with her. she can see him there, in a way, feel him in her mind, but he's just- quiet.
well, right up until today.
she watches their hands instead of his face like she always does, ever since that first time when she ended up grinning too much at the look of complete concentration he had going on. she watches their hands and wiggles her fingers against his, letting him play, touching just to touch. when she hears him that first time, it's almost like brushing past a radio frequency too quickly, and she reels herself in, tries to follow that feeling. when he comes in clear, she turns both of her palms up, holding onto his hands
Yes, you've got it! Took you long enough, huh?
but her smile is wide and genuinely proud, thumbs brushing over the back of his hands excitedly. now to run him through a few of the tests they were told to try, for practice. she sounds way too excited when she adds-
[ Having Teresa in his head isn't that weird -- she's always there, and it makes him happy in a way he can't really explain to someone who doesn't know the feeling. Talking to her is strange, though, and when he hears that he's done it, he can't help the goofy smile that spreads across his face, laughing a bit. It stirs him from that bit of concentration he had on the limitless extent of his mind -- and he tries to reel it in, starting right away on the alphabet.
... H, I, J, K...
He tries, definitely, to concentrate, if only because he knows it'll make Teresa happy and ensure that they won't be killed off by WCKD. He really does like her being alive, if he has to admit it -- even just the thought of losing her makes his heart ache, and he looks up from their handhold, staring at her pretty features. She's the stupid kind of pretty that really shouldn't exist in a world so ugly, so full of sickness.
You're really pretty, Teresa.
Definitely didn't mean to say that, and he flusters, eyes opening up wide before he ducks his head into his shoulder. ]
[ her eyes widen a little bit when his do, and it's an expression caught between surprised and pleased, though she'd never admit to the latter. not out loud, at least. still, he ducks his head and she tilts hers, like if she wills him to look up at her again, he will. like looking right at somebody who's embarrassed will ever have that result, right. yes. totally logical. and maybe a little bit mean, because Teresa is fully capable of being a jerk to Thomas when it comes to things like this. you know, his own embarrassment. she's not exactly Miss Smooth and Confident when it comes to these things, but he sure makes it easy to act like she might be.
so her best friend thinks she's pretty and she has a lot of thoughts about that, but she really must have a better control over her connection between them, because none of it passes through. not until she's ducking forward a little bit, nothing too intrusive, but you know. right there, grinning as she tries to get him to look at her again.
I was going to suggest you should work on filtering which thoughts which stay in your head and which don't, but now I'm thinking maybe you shouldn't.
she might even be blushing, but she'll pretend she's not.
You left off on K, right? J, K, L, M, N, O-oh, I think you're cute, too.
yeeeah, look how smooth she is. and maybe it's 100% true, though she's spent a lot of time convincing herself that what they were here for was way more important than admitting she found her best friend attractive, yeah. it's kind of nice though, having a reason to just say it. or think it, rather. ]
[ Being flustered is sort of like a constant state of being for Thomas -- at least, definitely, when it comes to Teresa. They're close enough where he can relax around her more than he has with anyone since he was taken from his parents -- having her is a bit like having a shadow, where they're always together, inseparable by WCKD's bonds, but their own as well. He knows it wasn't always like that but it feels like he's know her their entire lives, like it's always been the Tommy and Teresa show, partners in everything. Having a person like that, someone he trusts so fully and without a doubt, in the world they live in, it's petty surreal.
He knows his memory is going to get wiped eventually. But he really hopes he remembers her.
But still. Saying embarrassing things to your ridiculously pretty best friend makes pink spread up high on his cheekbones, and he avoids her gaze for a bit, taking a breath before looking her back in the eye. He almost says something about how beautiful she is again, but manages to stop himself, biting his lip like the words will come tumbling out, negating the point of their mind's connection. Thomas shakes his head, smiling a bit.
I said you were pretty, not cute.
Which makes him laugh again, dropping their handhold but only so he can lay down on the bed beside her, shoulder nudging her hip. ]
Yeah, I guess you're cute too, though. When you want to be.
