I haven't read any big bang fics. I keep reading the descriptions and thinking, "Huh" and then just scrolling on past, which is weird, since the Kindle has geared me to appreciate long, meaty fics -- the longer the better, frankly. So this should be making me jump up and down and screech with joy. But...no.

Maybe I need recs? The only story I even bothered to download is [livejournal.com profile] fleshflutter's Bulletproof one, since I saw it mentioned a couple different places.

What big bang stories turned your crank?

But I haven't read that many of them -- too busy.

What Remains (http://walkawayslowly.livejournal.com/1089291.html) by [livejournal.com profile] walkawayslowly

I just read it this morning, and it was good. I've kind of had the same reaction as you to most of the summaries, and there's one story in particular (that I've got all kinds of bizarre RL connections to) that I've seen recced high and lo that I really didn't like that much. But this one, I think, is worth the read.

I liked "In His Hand" about the two bullriders. The prose was so lifelike and so very western that I bought the whole story hook, line and sinker. That kicked me.
The Seahorse, because the dialog was snappy, the characters were dead on and it was hot hot hot. Don't let the mpreg scare you, this story is dynamite.
After the Tone. Watch the trailer for the film at the beginning of the story. it will make you believe. And it's a wonderfully paced, well developed story. Satisfying, totally.

I KNOW! And I still read it. It's amazing. Just a really good, satisfying read. Sam Ferris is the lead OB and she's fab and the side characters just totally shine. It's handled really skillfully.

Totally read the bullriders one. I still can't believe I read it, since I almost never read RPS and I never read RPS AUs, and I loved this story. I need to write the author much feedback, and I suck for reccing it first before having done so -- but maybe this will guilt me into it.

Holy shit, no, I didn't! Thank you!

I'm 7 eps into S1, and the show is adorable, but man, far more cheesy than I expected. *g* Not that I mind, seeing as how I love Starsky & Hutch. But, hee.

So far, Dief is my favorite part, and I like Ray V far more than I expected to, and his sister far less than I expected to. Hmm.

I think it really picks up steam toward the end of S1 (which is my nice way of saying the early episodes are my least favorite of the series). The second season is excellent, and the third/fourth season are EVERY FAN'S DREAM OMGSOGOODICANNOTEVENTELLYOU.

[livejournal.com profile] seperis is having her own epiphany, due-southally speaking. It's been a LOT of fun watching her succumb to the inevitable lure.

Stay with it -- it only gets better as it goes along.

i've been having the "huh" reaction a lot myself, and i haven't read all that many of the big bang stories as a result.

of the ones i have read, there were a lot of ok stories, but the one that really grabbed me was [Bad username or site: mickeym / @ livejournal.com]'s sam/dean WWII AU, we know each other as we always were (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/34722.html).

[Bad username or site: casspeach / @ livejournal.com]'s story, an RPS AU with jensen as a u.s. marshall protecting jared, a witness to a killing in a russian teahouse, dosvedanya, mr. darcy (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/31568.html), was smart and interesting, and not at all the cliché fic you might think from the description - it has a cool murder mystery thing going on - although not quite as cleanly written as [Bad username or site: mickeym / @ livejournal.com]'s story. [Bad username or site: topaz119 / @ livejournal.com]'s when push comes to shove (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/33565.html) was very good sam/dean (with assorted other pairings), although i'll pretty much read whatever she's written, and late night double feature (http://community.livejournal.com/spn_j2_bigbang/28369.html), by [Bad username or site: vorpalblades / @ livejournal.com], an RPS AU with jared and jensen working a summer in a movie theater, is pure fluff, but very charming and enjoyable fluff.

i don't know your taste exactly, but there were a few others i enjoyed, if you want more suggestions.

ETA: and i really wanted to like the bullriders AU [Bad username or site: chickenfried_jo / @ livejournal.com] mentions, but it was too stylistic for me. if that doesn't bother you, though, it was very well done.

To date, I give you my list.

For the sheer fun of it:
Spin the Light to Gold
The Seahorse
Late Night Double Feature - love Chris in this
Come Play With Me
Of Dice and Jen(sen)

Readable:
Fourth Wall
Ashes of Another Life
And Her Lips Are Cherry Red
Dosvedanya Mr Darcy
Only After Disaster Can We Be Resurrected

Ones I really enjoyed:
Infrangible Road - Gen - I know!!
Open Mike Night at the Fremont
Into His Hand - Bullrider!Fic!!!
Do I Seem Bulletproof To You?
In Production
What Remains

But most I still skipped over the sex scenes. I'm tending to find both J2 and Sam/Dean sex kinda . . . been there, done that, way too much. Of course I'm jonesing for some Chris/Vin love right now, too. lol.

Yes..yes they do. I have very fond memories of Canon!Jack/SEAL!Daniel stories. I even wrote an AU with a female SEAL character. In my humble opinion, there just aren't enough of them out there. And Jensen just has SEAL written all over him with his close cropped good looks and stern, take-no-shit attitude. (not that he's really like that, mind you)

I want the Sam and Dean grew up in the world of Melusine (http://www.amazon.com/Melusine-Sarah-Monette/dp/0441014178/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215030029&sr=8-4), were seperated as small children and, well, Dean totally grew up running with Mildmay the Fox and Sam? Sam did not end up in the Mirador but ended up apprenticed to a bloodwitch.

Oh, thanks for asking this - I've been thinking the same as you! I get a bit annoyed when the summary tells me the whole plot... so I've been avoiding those ones and it seems like it's become a bit of a trend for this fest. Which, you know, then I feel ungrateful because the authors have spent so much time crafting their stories and I'm dismissing it over a paragraph!

I like the bullriders one (recc'd below) by drusilla, and the mermaid one (I swore no mpreg either, but) - it makes sense (ah, in a warped sort of way :-) )

Date: 2008-07-02 11:27 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thisisbone.livejournal.com
I remain skeptical about the mermaid one...

I had the same feeling when I dismissed a few out of hand, then thought about how hard the writers must have worked on them! But if I see "dub-con" and "drug use" I'm pretty much outta there, no matter how good it is!

This was a good post - I can get recs from this post as well. I've only read the fleshflutter one you mentioned so far.

See, I'm not really into the fic part of Supernatural because to me Sam and Dean are brother who don't sex each other up. But instead I can read RPF AUs since to me if they turn the boys into ... clothesdesigners from Project Runway - they're not the actors anymore. And I get to read a long story w/o bashing anyone of their rl girlfriends

On the other hand I'm guilty of writing Marsters/Kartheiser RPS for Kita so I shouldn't say a thing lmao
