I liked it. A lot. I mean. I... liked it? I am so puzzled by how much I liked it. It induced that old Harry Potter squee and at no point did the squee go away.

Best since Cuarón, no question. I really, really liked it. I will go see it again. Possibly more than once. My canon deviation gripes are small, Kloves sold me on a lot of his Klovesian choices (for once), the acting's gotten better, and the direction and cinematography are the best I've ever seen Yates do.

Also, um, I LOVE THIS MOVIE. DEAR GOD HOW DID THAT HAPPEN THE ODDS WERE SO AGAINST IT HDKLFJDSKFLHRJW. Holy crap, Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter, Harry Potter. (See also.) How did this movie melt my curmudgeonly old fannish heart? IT MAKES NO SENSE. But I'm sure as hell not complaining, since it's about damned time.

♥. Just -- ♥!

I should get around to seeing this, apparently. Pretty strong recommendation here!

Oh, and I should see movie 6. I'm so behind. I guess I always choose a show over a movie.

Spewin' my fannish opinions at you. (How are you, by the way?)

I usually pick shows over movies too, these days. I'm finding I have less and less patience for rushing plots as time goes on. In my dreams, a well-meaning network with a higher budget than the BBC turns Harry Potter into the most epic miniseries since Mahabharat.

I am way less enthusiastic about the HBP movie, but that's partly because it's my favorite book and I feel like the wrong parts of it were focussed on. Some people thought it was awesome, and they're not totally wrong, like they would be if they thought the Goblet of Fire movie was awesome.

My fear now is that, now that I am finally excited about a Harry Potter movie for the first time in, like, seven years, the next movie will be extra super terrible just to spite me. But, yes, go see it! And be puzzled by the clean, fancy hipster clothes they were to camp in the wilderness, and how it's really good in spite of said clothes!

I'm pretty good! Howzabout yourself?

Heh when I originally wrote that, I was thinking shows-as-in-concerts, since that where most of my time is spent these days, but upon reflection, I also generally prefer TV shows/miniseries to movies for their ability to use more time to establish the world/tell their stories.

I was that way (less enthusiastic) about HP5. I found that book to be pretty grating, between Harry's adolescent angst and Umbridge, and I thought the movie did a good job of cleaning that up. My coworker has a rip of the HBP Blu-Ray, so I'll be getting that from him.
Oh god Goblet of Fire. Probably my favorite book in the series. Definite least favorite of the movies. Goddammit.

I definitely do want to see it! I've come along this far in the Harry Potter ride, I can't give up now.

Re: I'm pretty good! Howzabout yourself?

Yeah, part of my logic is that we might as well keep giving the HP movies money, since it's too late to keep them from making more by not giving them our money.

I work in a performing arts center, and I think it's been too long since my brain has heard the word "shows" used to describe music. What's even sadder about this is that performing arts center employees almost never go to any kind of show because it feels a little like going to work. I haven't been to a concert/reading/whatever in forever because some part of my brain is like, "Eh, I can just work that night and get paid to listen from backstage." I mean, I love my job, but as with all things, once you've worked in it, it's harder to see the thing as pure fun.

Meanwhile, I've been wanting to ask you for music recommendations for a while now. I've been heading over to the Bouncing Souls end of my CD collection more and more often over the last, like, two years, and I need to flesh it out. I suspect that my increased need for punk (or punk-ish) music is backlash from sitting backstage at too many plays, orchestras, and indie/alt. rock shows. Anyway, I usually like what you like, so if you're up to reccing me stuff, that would be awesome.

Re: I'm pretty good! Howzabout yourself?

Yeah, pretty much. It feels like a drop in the bucket at this point; what's one more movie ticket on top of all the other money they've gotten from me?

That must be pretty interesting work, I'd imagine. At least you get to see/interact with more creative types than most of us office drones, yeah? I totally can see that about not wanting to spend more time at work, even for a show of some sort.

--this will get long--
Music recommendations, you say? Welp, it just so happens I've got this handy-dandy music blog going on:
http://johnrflynn.com/blog/
The latest thing posted- Pilgrim by Red Collar- is a great mix of punk energy and more indie rock-ish music that I cannot get enough of. Their song "Used Guitars" brought the house down when I saw them in FL the other week. Plus, the LP has a Jawbreaker cover ("Jinx Removing") that might be better than the original.

Also gotta hype my friends' band, Red City Radio. They've just got an EP and a single out now, but the new album is hitting early 2011 (on Vinnie from Less Than Jake's label, Paper+Plastick) and from what I've heard, it's going to rule. Check out the EP, To the Sons and Daughters of Woody Guthrie.

On a completely different note, if you haven't heard The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monae, I cannot recommend it highly enough. A sorta-concept album with art inspired by Metropolis, she does a great mix of hip-hop/soul/R&B. She toured with Of Montreal, and Kevin Barnes shows up on one of the tracks. I dunno if that interests you.

Do you know the band Latterman? If so, good, and you should check out Iron Chic's album, Not Like This (free legal download (http://ironchic.bandcamp.com/album/not-like-this)). Featuring members of Latterman and Small Arms Dealer. (see: Small Arms Dealer's album A Single Unifying Theory, if you end up liking Iron Chic) If you don't know Latterman, check out their album No Matter Where We Go...! for some awesome, earnest, positive-as-hell punk rock from Long Island.

Oh, and Lemuria. I saw them last night so they're fresh in my mind. Female-fronted indie-punk in the vein of Discount and Rainer Maria. Great stuff. Their album Get Better is one of the best things that came out in the last few years. New record, Pebble, hits in January.

Finally, my friend Scotty down in Durham, NC, runs a download-based label, Death to False Hope Records (http://www.deathtofalsehoperecords.com/), that releases everything for free. Lot of awesome stuff there, from alt-country to punk to hardcore to early-'90s style emo (think Christie Front Drive, early Sunny Day Real Estate) to Gainesville "beardpunk" (Hot Water Music, pretty much).
Genre-nerding is fun.

This is just off the top of my head. I can come up with more if you like at some point. Also, poke through the blog; a lot of the stuff in there has links to streams or downloads where applicable.

Re: I'm pretty good! Howzabout yourself?

Thanks! Even if now I feel lazy for not just looking at your website first, which I totally knew about at some point and should've remembered. I'm going through it now, and oh man, I'm going to have fun with this. It's been way too long since I've added anything to my music collection.

Working there is super fun, which is why I do it even if I make almost no money. I've gotten to hear everything from Kris Kristofferson to Patti LuPone to Punch Brothers (none of which I particularly wanted to hear, but it gives you an idea of the range). What's frustrating is that, because I make no money and I have student loans, I'm probably going to have to become an office drone or go to grad school sometime in the next year (and get more student loans). Blah.

Re: I'm pretty good! Howzabout yourself?

Excellent! If you need assistance acquiring anything, let me know. I gots the hookup. Word.

Bummer about impending potential-dronehood, but at least you're doing something cool while you can :)
And if you go to grad school, do it in Boston. Because I'm awesome.

Finally saw it, and I agree about the unexpected liking of it. The scene I wanted to see most wasn't really realized fully in the movie, but I guess that's okay because I was hopelessly taken by Harry and Hermione dancing in that tent. Like, ridiculously, and not in a shipper way, but in an everyone talks about Ron/Hermione so much I forget how much Hermione and Harry are best friends kind of way. Pissed me off that Narcissa was still skunk-haired and mostly an extra, and kind of wanted to smack Draco until he actually formed words and then spoke them.

Also, my mom is somehow still under the impression that Snape is evil. Fani, she read all the books. What?

From: [identity profile] brownstudy.livejournal.com

Whaaat? But Snape saves the day! Repeatedly!

I was sold on the dancing, too. It's stupid and awkward but they are having so much fun! I would've been even happier if Steve Kloves had left in the part where Harry, y'know, actually says, out loud, that he's not in love with Hermione, but it's okay.

Which part did you wanna see? I went to see it again and now have some opinions beyond just initial shock at its goodness.

Also, I'm at about 30/50k on my NaNo, and I don't think I can do any more, so, too bad for you, characters I just made up a few weeks ago! (I do feel bad about not finishing their story, but I don't wanna finish it all that much.)

From: [identity profile] pendragonml.livejournal.com

I became too distracted by my pesticide test to work on my Nano, so I just promised myself I'd finish 2 of my epic been-sitting-there-for-2-years fics before the end of the year, and then start my still-can't-find-another-way- to-make-forever-work vampire not-romance in January. Which is hard, because I left these fandoms behind so loooooooong ago, I keep forgetting the lingo (yes, lingo!), and also because I keep getting distracted by my Nano, which I'd prefer to work on, and which now contains a healthy dose of religious disillusionment on the part of one of my mains, which leaves me reading the Old Testament, and siding not with my character, who strikes me as an ass. Even though he's the good guy.

It was the Lovegood's scene that let me down. We never saw Luna's room (didn't we see her room there?) and the house isn't cold and dirty and Harry never asks why Luna's dad only set 3 places if Luna's gonna be right along and then he never said "Get out of the way, Mr. Lovegood" which I sort of really needed.

Also, at one point Harry calls Voldemort You-Know-Who, which sort of interrupted things for me, because I was like "Harry doesn't call him that. And they haven't explained why he should."

From: [identity profile] brownstudy.livejournal.com

I agree. Molly was sitting next to me, whispering, "Luna's room," and I was sitting there like "... but Harry is supposed to say "Out of the way!" and make himself like Voldemort!" It did seem like the Death Eaters showed up right when someone said Voldemort, though, so that was good. Even if I'm not sure Kloves did it that way on purpose.

Yeah, they really should've explained why everyone was trying not to say Voldemort. I feel like that was a pretty significant plot point in the book. My #1 complaint, which is a complaint I have had for some time now, is moar Malfoys. And not just because I'm a Malfoy fangirl, either.

The voices in my NaNo sound super crazy and forced, which is probably because they are. I'd be more inclined to finish it after the month ends if I didn't know I'd have to go back and edit the fuck out of everything I've done already. If this month has taught me anything, it's that my edit-as-I-go strategy is what makes it possible for me to finish things. Also, all my characters are tropetastic dickholes and I don't know if I like them or not.

From: [identity profile] pendragonml.livejournal.com

I've seen that before. I love Emma's "oh, that's controversial!"

Also, I was super distracted by the bottom of the pond thing. Was there a reason for that in the book? Was it explained at all? Because in the movie it made no sense. 'Snape put the sword there, cuz he uh- can't get enough of Dan Rad's chest. Yup."

Also I asked my mom why Harry would name his kids after the bad guy and she just looked at me. And I was like "Albus Severus. Seriously, the worst name ever, you thought the names were coincidental or something?" I always thought she was one of those people who read right, but I might have been wrong.
