[ It's a miracle beyond anything the Network could cook up that the train from Yongenjaya to Shibuya actually has seats open. Even two years away from Japanese civilization hasn't done a thing to cloud her memories of the hell that's a train a peak time but she suspects that even at a busier hour, they would've had an easy time getting some breathing room. Having a six-and-a-half foot tall cryptid accompanying you tends to give you a certain presence.
Even so, it's a relief when the train finally pulls into the Shibuya Station and they can step out into the underground walkway. It's not fresh air quite yet, but it makes a nice difference from being stuck in the train car.
It'd be nice if Yuuri could bring herself to stop squinting worriedly at her phone and actually appreciate it. ]
There should be some stairs up the square somewhere around here...
[ She would have thought she'd be able to adapt to anything, after Thedas. If she can go from thousands of years into her own future to an entirely new world that most resembled ancient Earth, where the fastest mode of travel was on horseback, she can do anything, right?
And maybe that's true. But Tokyo is a lot to take in in any case, and especially after a year in Kirkwall. It's loud and bright and there are so many people that for a good minute after the Doctor says goodbye and the TARDIS fades away, CT stays right where she is, just...staring. Taking it all in.
And then she takes a deep breath, and shakes her head. Right. She starts scanning the crowd - Ardyn, at least, should be easy to spot. ]
[Akira's world and the Japan therein were...different. But the city was very like Insomnia, enough that after a while Ardyn was comfortable enough to rely a little less on going out under illusion magic.]
[...But only a little, because today the person that stopped mid-step and blinked in recognition at her was definitely no one she'd have recognized herself. A little more than hardlight, the figure spoke in a soft voice to match the disguise as if Ardyn forgot he was wearing an illusion at all.]
How lovely to see you. I wasn't expecting such a pleasant surprise today.
[ By Elaine's judgment, it's been a little over a year since they'd all gone home after spending some time in Alola. Being pregnant as hell for most of that time meant she hasn't really done any worldhopping, but her hometown of Opelucid City has been more of a welcome sight than ever in these past several months.
So when she catches a familiar voice ringing in her mind's ears, a familiar silhouette in the corner of her vision, well. She turns around to see what it is.
Hello there, Ardyn. She's got her Gothitelle by her side and a small baby tucked into one of those baby sling things at her chest. ]
[Ardyn's surface thoughts were a general sense of interest more than anything; his Absol, Montblanc, circled around his legs as they walked out of a nearby store.]
I don't know, it's certainly not Tokyo but it has its own sort of charm. Don't you think s- [Midsentence to the Pokemon beside him, Ardyn happened to glance up and:] Elaine! What a delightful surprise, I didn't expect to just run into you here.
[ It's getting late enough into the year that the weather's taking a turn for the gloomy. It's not as cold as she was expecting, just enough for a jacket, but it's dull and rainy enough that the whole city seems to have had a dampener put on its mood.
Or what's what she thought, anyway. They're not even really on an outing, just running to the store for some groceries but here's a commotion on the street that Yuuri completely wasn't prepared for. It's... a parade? A march? Some nonsense like that and it's completely blocking off the road. All they can really do is just sort of stand awkwardly on the street and wait for it to pass.
Yuuri looks about as nonplussed as you'd expect by a display like this. But then something seems to click and her expression sours considerably. ]
[There's a lot to be said for living this new life of Jane's. The house is always full and bustling with found family, friends, chocobos - dear Lord, she could never tire of them - and when things are difficult, there's always a sympathetic shoulder or ear. But sometimes, you're nearly nineteen and have access to the means to travel to any world you please, and plenty more you've never heard of, and that's kind of what you do to treat yourself as an early birthday present - you travel. You explore. You become a vagabond passing through and meet people, running into old friends and seeing things, and you slowly catch Pokemon to bring home so that everyone can have a special companion...
...What, don't judge her, let her give Xander a whole fucking dragon.
But anyway, even small lady vagabonds know to come calling on their uncles in early spring, when they can't quite shake memories of cookies that you absolutely should not eat. (She's off by about ten days, but even so.) It's because of this that Jane's come to call at the Tenmyouji residence, and raps on the front door with "shave-and-a-haircut", a gift basket of very nice fruit resting at her feet.
Look, she's not dumb enough to bake something and drag upsetting memories to the surface.]
[Ardyn was...existing. Some days that was the best he could do, lately. It wasn’t that he was unhappy—far from it, but life tended to wear on him in a way it did for few others. But he was definitely alive and functional today, hair in a thick disheveled braid. He answered the door with a pleasant if tired smile, brightening just a bit as he saw who it was.]
Jane-? My, this is a delightful surprise. Do come in, to what might we owe the pleasure?
Well, 'star' is pushing it. He's taking on roles in various soap operas, anyway, and that means plenty of travel through time and space to be where he needs to be. And Church? Well, Church likes tagging along sometimes. It made him nervous, at first, and came along as protection. But time revealed that Ardyn's hardly ever in much more danger than being accidentally poked in the eye with a mascara wand. Ardyn's a big boy who is more than capable of taking care of himself, too, and there wasn't anything wrong with staying at home instead of spending his time terribly bored in the background, trying to piece together the absurd plots of this show or that.
Today however is a luncheon out, and he can't say no to an invitation like that. It's a nice little place they've settled into with some...more alien fare than they're used to.]
I'm glad it's so nice out here, too I did part of a a stream outside today. Lil bit of clickbait for something different and fun, lil bit keeping the birds company. Not my smartest move; sun glare on screens is not great, but like, I figured, they could use some attention, and it was too beautiful to stay inside all day.
Well, I've no doubt the birds enjoyed it no matter the quality.
[Ardyn was admittedly glad Church had accepted the fact that he wasn't in mortal peril whenever he left...but at the same time, he did miss having the company. So days like this were the sort he enjoyed, particularly when it came to trying something new.]
[(He'd mostly started to move past his reluctance to accept food. Mostly.)]
The weather really is something, isn't it? I was so used to extremes back home that it almost seems unreal that days this nice can persist for so long.
[Japan in summertime, guess what? Just as hot as anywhere else in the summer.
Which, that was fine enough. AC existed, after all. And Church was never shy about going around in as few clothes as possible if he could get away with it anyway. (It made for some videos lately wherein he could show off his guns, which he was sure would make for a nice little uptick in views.)
But half the fun of being sans clothing was having someone to share that with, and Ardyn had been away. He ought to be back sometime today. Sometime. Anytime. Meantime, he kept himself occupied with his...job? Gig? Side gig? Thing. To pass the time.]
[Ardyn wasn't too bothered by the heat; ultimately he'd come from a desert climate, and some two thousand years without a sense of hot or cold had begun to settle into something resembling normalcy. So of course he was still wearing black when he came home, noticing the usual frustrated sounds of his husband's job/hobby/blood pressure raiser.]
[Well, that was fine. He'd just sneak into the kitchen so as not to interrupt and start making some nice calming tea while that was finishing up.]
[It was hardly uncommon for either of them to be plagued with bad thoughts. Their pasts haunted them more than they'd liked. It was just one of those things that made them fit together so well.
Ardyn wasn't the only one prone to nightmares. Not of memories suddenly uncovered in one terrible fell swoop (after another), but memory...memory is the key.
He awoke with a start, a jerk of the head and a sharp inhale. Where...? Dark, warm and dark and his heart, the heart he had physically, beat a wild drum. Home. He was home. And there was a husband he shouldn't wake.]
[Usually Ardyn slept like a rock, but he also wasn't so far gone that sudden motion would be completely unnoticed. He made a vague sound, stretched like a cat, and reached over with a searching hand to find Church's arm.]
[Church had come around on the chocobos after a much shorter time period than he threatened when they'd first moved in and brought chocobos with them. That for all his protests, the big rideable birds had indeed become family. Funny how before he would never have thought he'd willingly sit in what was basically a small glorified barn with the fattest, fluffiest chick in his lap and be happy about it.
And a nuzzling mama bird watching over. He patted the adult lightly, reassuringly.]
We're all right, we're all alright here, papa's lap is nice and cozy warm. Isn't that right, chubbykins? You big chungus.
[ Yuuri has absolutely no idea what time it is anymore – she thinks it was around eleven when the nurses were nice enough to help her manage a shower and now she feels moderately more like a human being even if she's completely lost track of what time it is. Which keeps happening – her days revolve less around the tick of the clock now and more around visiting hours and whenever she and Haruka sleep and wake. They've got a private room together (it helps when you can grease the wheels with Intergal Guilt Money) and it feels like they're in a small, quiet bubble while the rest of the world goes on outside.
It's nice, quiet and peaceful. And she's not expecting any visitors yet. So it seems like a good enough time to settle in with Haruka and try to relax.
[Obviously the space fam was basically living in, around, and near the hospital, god on high couldn't get rid of them.]
[...Ardyn probably would have killed one or several if they tried, confusing theologians across the galaxy.]
[And speaking of Ardyn, there wasn't the security or peace in the world he couldn't get around. With a telltale thunk outside her window, a 6'5" cryptid that was almost entirely legs phased right through a mostly-closed 27th story window.]
[Mostly closed is, as we all know, slightly open.]
[Their romantic life doesn't need spiced up. But. There's something about the idea of a first date, like a proper first date, like pretending they're normal people who met through a dating app or some kind of meet-cute and decided to go out and act like they have relatively normal-type lives that appeals.
So, casual cafe, nothing too upscale or fancy, easy enough walking distance, and Church is dressed just as casually. Jeans, comfy hoodie, everything good, waiting for his 'date' and playing with his phone. It's kind of stupid, kind of embarrassing, kind of cute. He's never had a first date before, not really! Call it roleplaying?]
[Ardyn was never one to turn down a new experience. The idea of a first date, a proper, normal, modern first date was something utterly foreign, and he was ecstatic to play along with the idea. It was difficult not to laugh from sheer excitement over the whole silly thing, but he made a good effort. Violet hair braided as usual, more or less dressed down in shades of dark red with his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.]
Excuse me- [He'd never been much of an actor even with a career as an actor, and it was impossible to keep a smile off his face.] I was supposed to meet someone here today.
Unsurprising, probably; as much as Noct likes being firmly rooted in one place, taking life day by day, not worrying about anything like gods or destiny or Chosen Kings, sometimes he likes to wander. It's not like he doesn't tell Luna--of course he does, and she understands--and besides, they both do their fair share of traveling. He misses her when he's gone, but there are others he misses, too.
Like the girls. And, well-- ]
Look at you. Someone's been taking great care of you. Here, more greens for you, buddy.
[ Chocobos. Family in other parts of the wide, wide multiverse. Noctis is gently stroking one of the chocobos' beaks, cooing softly to it; he wouldn't even know if someone were to come up behind him... ]
[To his credit, Ardyn was mindful about not sneaking up on the surprise visitor; leaning against the door frame with folded arms and an amused look. His black chocobo munched happily on the offered snack, nuzzling right up on Noctis' head in thanks.]
[ One day, out of the blue, a package arrives in Ardyn's mailbox. It's an unassuming thing, wrapped in simple galaxy paper, but there's a tiny label in the corner with a simple message written: Courtesy of I.S and N.L.C. It should be enough to not be suspicious, at least.
Inside, there's a history book; it's thick, and essentially it's your run-of-the-mill history book. Nothing too dramatic... if not for the fact that it speaks of a man who'd sacrificed so much for his country, a dethroned king who'd only wanted to help. A kind and noble king, cut down far too soon... and after that, there are snippets of certain exploits that had, previously, gone unexplained. It doesn't exactly spell out who'd done those things.
But it's a record that had, before, been too edited for the authors' apparent tastes.
Noctis visits, not long after, and he says absolutely nothing about the obvious gift. He does bring a box of sweets, though, and he's just... let himself in, apparently? There's coffee, at least, one cup for him and one for Ardyn.
And when Ardyn makes his way into the living room, all Noctis does is hold up a muffin. ]
[He'd read it, of course--it hadn't taken a genius to figure out who sent it, and even if he hadn't known, curiosity would still have gotten the better of him.]
[...He might have cried a little. Or a lot. He was terribly emotional as a human, after all.]
[But when Noctis showed up with little warning as he tended to do, Ardyn had mostly pulled himself together.]
Oh- [Mostly.] -a-ah...sorry, I didn't know you were coming. You haven't been waiting too long, have you?
[There are days when Ardyn isn't there when Church wakes up, and he doesn't panic, because he's not supposed to be there. He's off schmoozing at a camera for the galaxy or something. There are days when Ardyn isn't there when Church wakes up, and he does panic, because he's supposed to be there.
There isn't a game, and it should be perfectly normal and natural for his other half to be wherever he wants to be, whenever he wants to be it. But Ardyn has habits, and those habits include sleeping in late.
And sometimes rationality takes a backseat. Church has a sheet pulled around him when he pads into the kitchen, and he makes his way immediately to Ardyn and presses himself very hard against him, relieved.]
[Ardyn, meanwhile, had somehow gotten up at a normal human hour--seeing his husband still asleep, he opted to start making a nice breakfast for the pair of them.]
[Somewhere around the course of mixing pancake batter, he found said husband bonking insistently into him for a tight hug.]

Hungry?

[...He might have cried a little. Or a lot. He was terribly emotional as a human, after all.]
[But when Noctis showed up with little warning as he tended to do, Ardyn had mostly pulled himself together.]
Oh- [Mostly.] -a-ah...sorry, I didn't know you were coming. You haven't been waiting too long, have you?

There isn't a game, and it should be perfectly normal and natural for his other half to be wherever he wants to be, whenever he wants to be it. But Ardyn has habits, and those habits include sleeping in late.
And sometimes rationality takes a backseat. Church has a sheet pulled around him when he pads into the kitchen, and he makes his way immediately to Ardyn and presses himself very hard against him, relieved.]

[Somewhere around the course of mixing pancake batter, he found said husband bonking insistently into him for a tight hug.]
Wh-? Leonard? What's wrong?
