PERSONALITY:
Once, Chas’s only ambition was meeting someone and starting a family and making that his priority. He managed to do that, meeting and marrying a woman named Renee and having a daughter, Geraldine, with her. They were more important to him than anything in the world, and he really was the happiest guy. Now, they’re still his whole world, even though he and his wife aren’t together anymore, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that he’d do anything for them, including put his life on the line to save them both.
It’s a bit of an interesting conundrum, because the main reason why his marriage didn’t work out is because he never made time for them and was always off helping out his best friend John with his various otherworldly cases.
But the fact remains that (when it works out for Chas) it’s still Chas’s goal to be there as much as he can for his former wife and his beloved daughter. So he’s not perfect, and he misses more father-daughter weekends than he attends, but as long as he’s in town
Chas is a man of heart and conscience. He cares deeply about people, and when things go wrong because of his choices and decisions, he just shelves the weight and guilt of that and resolves to do better. But he always finds himself in a vicious cycle of wanting to do better for his family, but when push comes to shove, he ends up being caught up in his need to be all things to all people and finding out that he can’t pull off being there for his family while also being there for his best friend John.
Said best friend is basically permanently embroiled in a fight against what he calls the rising darkness (basically evil and dark magic), and unfortunately, Chas always winds up caught in the middle, wrestling with his own indecision. He wants to do the right thing, but it’s difficult when he’s in a position of being able to help both sides of the proverbial coin but can only help one or the other.
This proves difficult for him because he’s a people-pleaser at his core, and the fact that he often gets pulled in different directions between his wife Renee and his friend John causes him no small amount of headaches. Renee’s demands for Chas are reasonable, because even though they’re separated, they still have a daughter they have to raise. John, on the other hand, keeps Chas around because he secretly wants the companionship the other man provides, as well as the safety net that he represents thanks to his extra souls.
When Chas is wavering between his responsibilities to his family and to John, John is quick to lay on the guilt trips and manipulation to keep Chas close at hand. And, well, unfortunately for Chas, he just wants to please everyone (and usually ends up pleasing no one, including himself), which just contributes even further to his guilty conscience.
But with all of this, whether Chas is helping his family or helping John, the fact remains that he’s most comfortable when taking up a supportive role. Yes, he routinely misses his father-daughter weekends, but he’s always quick to try and rectify that to the best of his ability. His supporting role becomes clearer when he’s around John, because he wears a lot of hats in order to help out the other man. If John needs a driver, or a getaway car, Chas is there. If John needs someone to provide a distraction or put themselves on the line to buy some time, Chas is there, usually to his (temporary) detriment. Those extra lives that he carries with him basically mean he’s John’s safety net when things get bad, and he’s died for the other man more than once. But he never complains, never speaks out about being the sacrifice or the scapegoat.
In fact, when other people are having a rough day, regardless of his own personal feelings, he’s always quick to bolster them up with a hug or a listening ear, because he’s happiest when he’s putting others more at ease. And, well, it helps that he’s very good at offering advice. It’s just a strange conundrum because he fails to manage his own personal affairs, but he often has sound advice and help to give others who are having difficulty in their own lives.
ABILITIES: Chas has no supernatural or above average abilities except for the extended lifespan that he gained from the spell John Constantine put on him, including the 47 souls that were transferred to him. He’s still able to die, but he can revive thanks to those extra souls. Revival takes about 24 to 48 hours depending on the cause of death. He has 30 souls remaining as of his canon point.
Also, any injuries that he sustains heal faster than normal, thanks to the protection spell that John put on him.
