Contents: Neferti looks up from the cell where she has been kept. The wards on the prison nullify any magic used within, and even her false eye has been taken from her. With a patch over her eye and her arms cuffed and warded, she is led from the holding cell to the courtroom. There she stands at the bottom of a tall room, as above her, the visored visage of the Knight Commander Cyril stares down at her.

A gong is rung as the trial begins. Neferti of the Magic Knights, Cyril intones, is hereby accused of treason. A rift was discovered in one of the storage rooms near the Source Crystal, and Neferti stands accused of causing it.

Neferti protests immediately that she is innocent. She would never do such a thing, she has no reason, no methods, nor any real understanding yet of what happened. If she is to be accused, she demands, at least let her be made aware of why. Cyril glances to the armored figures beside him (had they been there this whole time? Neferti curses that she wasn't paying attention) and they all nod.

Through a door in the side of the room on Neferti's level, though a rail separates them, a new figure in knight uniform enters. The court will hear Bartholomew's testimony, Cyril declares, and Neferti recalls the name. A man who rose through the ranks of the knights with shocking speed, praised for his handsome looks and terrifying skill with both sword and magic. He was the model knight that all should aspire to be like, she had heard.

He looks down at her with contempt as he speaks. A dishonored traitor, his look seems to say, deserves its fate. He begins with a simple statement: One of the storage bays in the Source Crystal area was breached, a hole going down through the city's floor, forming a tunnel extending down nearly to the bottom... Just a bit more, he stated, and a hole would be wide open, allowing monsters access to the source of all life in their city, and plunge them all into the ocean's abyss.

But, Neferti snaps back, that is not enough to point to her as a criminal. What evidence does he have?

Bartholomew raises his hand. The location of the hole is in the same place it was in her grandfather's famous fight. Of course, as his child, she would know about such a weak point in the city's defense, and be able to target it easily.

Neferti argues back. That story, her grandfather's heroic battle, is- as he said- famous. Many would know. That is not enough.

He gives a smile like a predator with cornered prey, and holds up a small, clear bag. Inside appeared to be... Black hairs? Not hairs, Bartholomew corrected. Fur. Tail fur, to be precise. It was not there the night before the rift appaeared, but the day the attempted rift appeared, they were found at the scene.

A flash of insight goes through Neferti's head. It is her only chance to be declared innocent, she thinks. If the attempted rift appeared all in one day, she points out, it all happened at once. Yet, she points out, she is a Bast, her magical ability is very weak. It should be obvious to all who have seen her magic that she lacks the power and ability to cause such a large rift in the span one night, when no one could have seen her.

Bartholomew's smile slips to anger, his face asking how far she intends to run from her crimes. The Source Crystal was right there, he points out. With its power, she could have easily-

Cyril raises his hand, and Bartholomew goes silent. The Source Crystal is the source of their city's life. It is well protected, he states. It is not so easy to just draw power from it, especially without being noticed. Her point stands.

Neferti's heart leaps as Cyril continues his thought. Neferti has made a clear point, and it is true that it cannot have been her. She waits for his next words, the words that will restore her honor to her-

But, he says, Bartholomew's evidence has no explanation yet. As it stands, the evidence says that it cannot have been Neferti, but it also shows that it must have been Neferti. Furthermore, there are none among the Knights who can vouch for her character. As she is not found guilty, she will keep her position, but she cannot be allowed to remain near the Source Crystal.

The gong rings once more. Neferti of the Magic Knights is to be sent to a new post on the city's outskirts, too far to come back to this crystal.

He speaks more, but his words are indistinct, a buzz in the background, as Neferti's mind goes blank. She surely misheard... She is not trusted? No, something must be wrong. She upheld her honor perfectly. Surely others would know this. Others... such as who? Who among her comrades could she say know her well? And now everything... The honor and pride she upheld in the name of Isaac is being taken from her? The very thing she had devoted her life until now to had been taken from her...

The world around her becomes hazy and indistinct, as she is no longer aware of the world around her.
