what I did on a random summer weekend
I've been feeling better since Friday, but I'm still not entirely all there. Now I seem to be developing a mild chest cold. :-(
Saturday we were going to join
pheromone and David out at Walden Pond, but when we got there there was a big sign and a chain across the parkin' lot saying "We're Full. Go Away". Well, OK, it was a park employee and she was a bit more polite, but the gist was the same. So we went to Drumlin Farm instead, looked at farm animals and found the trail that goes behind my sister's house.
After stopping home and eating something, we went up to the party in Derry NH. This is a house that holds parties pretty regularly, drawing from a few crowds besides Suspects, so it's an interesting mix of people. I liked most of them, but people were drinking too much for my taste (and this is me saying this). Got to hear BQ and ER playing guitar and singing; they're most of a band called Giants Dance, which my old housemate SC was in for a while. Then got in a geeky conversation about programming with P (I need a Greek font here) and ER's boyfriend whose name I can't remember.
Next day was a long string of activities, starting at
miss_chance and P's yard sale in Somerville. I picked up a few CDs, all of which I like so far. One of them is from an outfit called "Lindasusan and the Total Babes" (their songs are copyrighted to One Word No Dash Music); I commented that they looked like people I should know, and found out that the eponymous Lindasusan had been known to several elboids when she was on this coast. She has the sort of clear contralto voice that I've mostly heard from fannish-type singers and really like (the Flash Girls are a good example). Pretty geekly lyrics too; one song is a passage from Twelfth Night set to music. They supposedly have a website here, but it appears to be down.
From there it was out to an Arisia meeting, or so we thought. Turned out that
gosling had had a miscommunication with
roozle and it wasn't a meeting that it would be useful for us to be at. However, since it was at Readercon, we hung around and enjoyed the tail end of that. Had a long fun rantful conversation with
dr_bitch, AB and 3D, interrupted briefly by some obnoxious older guy who got all arrogant and patronizing at Gosling, something she just adores, let me tell you. =:-O
From there we went to Diesel for KT's goodbye foo, of which we were the only attendees (other than KT, of course). But we spent a fine hour and a half talking with her and eating bad-for-you food.
Then up to craftnight at
candle_light and MR's place. Worked on a piece of code and had a frustrating time trying to get it working; I finally solved it after I got home. Pity I can't really carry my monitor places; the screen on my laptop is just too damn small (even at 1024x768).
Spent a lot of today working on my music database project, though actually most of what I did was data entry. I needed a couple of example cases in my database for the code I was designing (proper handling of multi-song tracks and multi-track songs), and since I haven't written the data-entry modules yet, I had to update all of the SQL tables by hand, a royal pain. (I had entered my existing test data using the CD database app my dissatisfaction with which inspired me to start this project, and munged it to fit my somewhat more complicated database schema.) At some other point, I'll write up a fuller description of the project.
