[ At some point, Kakashi realizes he hasn't seen Sakura in hours.
He knows he saw her after the battle because he wouldn't have been able to rest or think about anything else with true clarity until he'd made sure. All of them. Naruto, Tenzou, Gai. Reports are fine but until he has laid his own two eyes on each of them and found them alive and not minutes from death's doorstep, it's hard to prioritize anything else. Which is bad when you're the Hokage and everything is a priority, all at once.
The idea of lasting peace is all well and good, he's decided, but a foolish thing to hope for. In his lived experience, it never lasts. They defeated Kaguya and bought themselves a few good years of quietude, but it's not just the supernatural that court destruction. He thinks war is just human nature, at this point. There's no such thing as an elegant battle, either, but some are uglier than most. Konoha endured heavy casualties, and this time there's no deus ex machina to bring the dead back. They line the streets, many haphazardly covered but some still in the open simply because they've run out of anything to cover them with.
He knows Sakura is alive, at least. But alive and whole are two separate things.
Kakashi is not in the his Hokage robes right now, and there's a reason for it. They couldn't have hoped to keep him locked up in the Tower on a night like this, but behind the anonymity of an ANBU mask the only thing the enemy had to target was a clone in an office full of ANBU guards. He can do what he does best when there isn't a giant target on his back. It also means he can slip up to the rooftops unnoticed.
It does make him a sight when he finally finds her, with bloodspatter all over his white vest, his white mask, his white hair. But it's all over her, too, he realizes. ]
[ between the red clothing she still hasn't given up and the blood, sakura is practically covered in the color. not all of it is from being elbows-deep in field surgeries and patching up wounds, either. there's a spatter of red across her face--arterial spray from a nin she'd hit with a kunai. a line of crusted, dried blood runs down her arm from a mostly-healed wound she'd gotten sometime earlier.
it doesn't faze her anymore. she doesn't know what that says about her. ]
Mmn. [ it's a small sound of acknowledgement. when he's dressed like that, even when she's fairly certain there's no one around, she won't call him anything. not sensei, not rokudaime, not kakashi or even whatever mask he's purloined so he can fight the way he fights best.
with a soft sigh, she turns away from the aftermath of the battle to face him. before she does anything else, sakura gives him a quick glance to see if he's in need of her medical skills. it's more habit than anything else, at this point. ]
Did you need something? [ she asks, picking at the flaking red on her forearm.
it's a silly question. of course there's a reason he's up here looking for her. but there are--motions to go through. things that help keep her sane when the world is falling apart. asking the obvious to sometimes keep conversation flowing is one of them. ]
[ If you go strictly by the rules of ANBU, you're not ever supposed to take off your mask while wearing the uniform, but no one ever really obeys the letter of that law. Hard to eat and drink on long missions in the mask, for example. Talking is a pain in the ass like this too. Besides which, Kakashi hasn't stuck strictly to the rules ever since he had his eye gouged out.
He's also the Hokage, so, you know, fuck it. He pushes the hawk mask up and off, holding it loosely in his hand as he stands behind her. Takes the whole picture in. Mostly, he's looking at the blood. Very little of it seems to come from obvious wounds, so he has to assume most of it comes from other people. Dead allies, he wonders, or dead enemies? The answer is probably both. He's not sure which of those things is harder to handle. He's useless enough at protecting people, let alone responsible for trying — and sometimes failing — to save them. This is the one area where she has vastly more experience than he does. Dead enemy nin, on the other hand.... well, he's scrubbed lots of their blood and viscera off his knuckles. He knows what it is to become deadened to it, and he's accepted that in himself. Kakashi knows a lost cause when he sees it.
Seeing it in Sakura now, though... it twists something into a knot in his gut. Guilt, maybe. Regret. ]

[ It's a deceptively casual answer. He isn't injured, not seriously. There's nowhere she needs to be reporting at the moment. He's here for her. ]
[ for a moment, she's surprised. kakashi is the hokage now, and they're at war. he must have a million things to be doing right now, and he's checking on her? that doesn't seem right. but, then again, this is kakashi they're talking about. of course he's going to look in on his team.
some of the tenseness in sakura's shoulders disappears as she gives him a wan smile. ] Then you can come with me while I get some of this-- [ she gestures to the spatter on her face. ] Cleaned up.
[ sakura is one of the lucky ones; her team is still alive and her apartment building is still standing. it's hard to feel lucky when there's dead lining the streets, though.
she tries to put those thoughts out of her mind as she hops across the rooftops to her (thankfully) nearby apartment. it takes a moment and a deft flick of her wrist to disable the traps on her window, and then she's indoors, leaving the entry open for kakashi to follow her. ]
There's ration bars in the bowl on the counter. [ she says as she unzips her shirt and ducks into the bathroom. wetting a washcloth and starting to dab at her skin, she continues. ] You look like you could do with some calories right about now. Or coffee, but I'm out of that.
