bricolage [bree-kuh-lahzh, brik-uh-]

noun:
1 a construction made of whatever materials are at hand; something created from a variety of available things.
2 (in literature) a piece created from diverse resources.
3 (in art) a piece of makeshift handiwork.
4 the use of multiple, diverse research methods.

Examples:

Billed as fiction, this creative-critical work is a bricolage of archival research, colonial histories, transcribed conversations, ghost stories, memoir, epistolary address, reimagined pasts, speculative and suspended futures. (Jenny Hedley, A technology to remember and forget: André Dao’s Anam, Overland, August 2023)

That resourcefulness has developed into an art of exhilarating bricolage, of functioning objects that are greater than the sum of their pieced-together parts. (Andrew Russeth, Tom Sachs: Rocket Man to Renaissance Man, New York Times, July 2022)

This distinction also escapes a number of creative writing researchers who have adapted bricolage as a research methodology. They enumerate the benefits without sufficiently acknowledging the drawbacks, which include superficiality, overgeneralisation and misinterpretation of the theories and practices of other disciplines. (Jeri Kroll, 'The writer as interlocutor: The benefits and drawbacks of bricolage in creative writing research', Journal of writing and writing courses, 2021)

Her bricolage approach to songwriting is fairly obviously that of someone raised with streaming’s decontextualised smorgasbord as their primary source of music. You can hear it in the way she leaps from one source to another, unburdened by considerations of genre or longstanding notions of cool, like someone compiling a personal playlist. (Alexis Petridis, PinkPantheress: Fancy That review – sharp-minded bops hop across pop’s past and present, The Guardian, May 2025)

The system eventually introduced for Big Bang reflected this fragility and contingency of infrastructures: it was the creative result of reshaping legacy devices into a system that did the job for the time being. A band-aid. A product of creative, recombinant bricolage. (Juan Pablo Pardo-Guerra, Automating Finance: Infrastructures, Engineers, and the Making of Electronic Markets)

Origin:
term used in arts and literature, 'work made from available things,' by 1966, via Lévi-Strauss, from French bricolage, from bricoler 'to fiddle, tinker' and, by extension, 'make creative and resourceful use of whatever materials are to hand (regardless of their original purpose),' 16c, from bricole (14c) (Online Etymology Dictionary)

According to French social anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, the artist 'shapes the beautiful and useful out of the dump heap of human life.' Lévi-Strauss compared this artistic process to the work of a handyman who solves technical or mechanical problems with whatever materials are available. He referred to that process of making do as bricolage, a term derived from the French verb bricoler (meaning 'to putter about') and related to bricoleur, the French name for a jack-of-all-trades. Bricolage made its way from French to English during the 1960s, and it is now used for everything from the creative uses of leftovers ('culinary bricolage') to the cobbling together of disparate computer parts ('technical bricolage'). (Merriam-Webster)

My daughter “Melody” is in the midst of the terrible twos. Five or more meltdowns per day over normal frustrations/limits are typical. Recently, my mother-in-law, “Darlene” took Melody and my 6-year-old son out to run errands, and true to form, Melody had a blow-up. It was how Darlene handled it that has me seeing red. She told Melody that she was leaving her in the store and that she could find her own way home, and left her screaming on the floor! She then moved off with my son, out of my daughter’s view, and waited for several minutes before coming back for her. I only learned of this later when my son told me what happened.

When I confronted my mother-in-law, she claimed her method was helpful because Melody behaved afterward. And she said Melody was “never in any danger” because she kept her in sight at all times. After this, I no longer feel safe with Darlene going places with the kids without my husband present or me. Sadly, my husband is no help. He agrees that this was a good “lesson” in behaving for our daughter and that his mother used to do it to him and his sister when they were kids! Please tell me I’m right in telling Darlene her days of taking the kids solo are over.

Now recruiting: DW users who would be interested in the possibility of helping us out in one of these legal challenges, now or future!

If you would be open to the idea of potentially filing something with a court talking about the ways that the restrictions that Dreamwidth would have to impose to comply with a specific state's law (commonly, obligations like age verification via document scan or biometric verification, treating users as though they're underage until/unless they age-verify, etc) would have a chilling effect on your online activity and speech, and especially if you're a parent who would also be willing to explain to a court all the ways in which a specific state's law would interfere with or burden your parenting decisions: we're looking to assemble a list of people we can contact in the future if necessary.

If this sounds like you, please leave a comment with what state you currently live in. (Also, commenting is not a commitment, just you saying that you would be okay with us reaching out to you and seeing whether you were available/able to help.) I'm currently most interested in hearing from people from South Carolina, but the ubiquity of these laws being proposed means any state could be the next. All comments are screened so nobody but us can see them.

(Obligatory risk considerations: you would have to file under your wallet/government name, and there's a chance of having to associate your wallet name with your DW username to at least the court and to the state, if not publicly. If this could be a problem for you, don't risk it! But if you're willing and able, us being able to show the court a sworn statement from one of our users about the effects the mandated changes would have on you could be very helpful.)

EDIT: Also I forgot to explicitly specify, this is for US folks! We do not unfortunately have the ability to get involved with anything outside the US.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP PLEASE READ THIS
even if you've done HA many times and think you know it all

Nominations have reopened but please don't nominate a fandom that isn't already in the tagset unless you are definitely going to request it. Nominations will close 24 hours before sign-ups close.

You will need to request at least one safety fandom. You will need to offer at least one thing that someone else is requesting. If you don't have a safety fandom or you can't be matched to a recipient, you'll be given 24 hours to fix it or delete your sign-up.

You must request at least 3 different fandoms. You must offer at least 3 different fandoms. Angling your offers to match a request you know you can create for is a good idea, but don't pad your offers out with things you aren't really into and then hope no one requests them. If you can't think of three fandoms that you love SO MUCH you're willing to spend two panicked weeks writing 10k/drawing a long comic for them, this might not be the right exchange for you.

You must put DNWs in each request or "I have no DNWs" if you really don't have any. No empty optional detail boxes! Please also consider adding at least one like to your signup! Knowing what you don't want is great, but please leave your creator something to indicate what you do like, even if that's "I love pizza." Prompts and letters are great, but they're not required. If you link a letter, it needs to be readable (not a locked Dreamwidth post) and complete by the time sign-ups end, or your creator is unlikely to use it.

You must check EITHER “I Opt In to Receiving a Comic Instead of Fic” OR “I Do Not Opt In to Receiving a Comic -- Fic Only for Me!” for each request.

If you choose to offer "Any Relationship" that refers to any relationship in the tagset. Since nominations will keep coming in during most of the sign-up phase, make sure you check the tagset periodically to make sure you're comfortable creating for ANY of the nominated ships in your fandom.

Email [email protected] with Do Not Match requests (to prevent a particular person or people from creating for you) and Do Please Assign requests (to ask that you be assigned to create for a particular person). I can't guarantee I'll assign you to the recipient you want, but I'll try. If you are only offering art, please email the modmail after you sign up to let me know who you are matching to/who you would be happy to match to so I can make sure to match you to that person.

Dear Carolyn: I know you love dogs, but in a reasonable way, so I figure you’re a good person to ask. Is there a “normal” amount of pets for someone to have? I never had dogs or cats growing up and didn’t want them in our home when our children were young.

All my children at times asked for a pet but grew to accept my aversion, except for my youngest daughter. When she used to insist she couldn’t wait to move out and get a pet, I took it with a grain of salt. She did get a dog in the house she shared with friends in college, and her obsession has only grown since then. The last time I saw her, she excitedly told me she’s a foster parent to a litter of puppies now. I’m not sure how that works, but it brings the number of dogs in her house from two to six, and she also has two cats.

I asked if she was going to get kicked out of her house, since her township can’t possibly allow that number of animals in a small home and yard, and she just laughed at me. She apparently doesn’t understand the law or care how this all must affect her neighbors.

Could this possibly be the start of some sort of mental illness? Should I try to intervene further?

Dear Care and Feeding,

My wife, “Lourdes” and I have a 2-year-old daughter, “Mackenzie.” Mackenzie was a difficult baby (long crying spells, difficult to soothe, hypersensitive to sound, fussy about solid food, etc.), and my wife has a low threshold for frustration. So most of Mackenzie’s care fell to me since Lourdes said she “couldn’t deal with it.” The result has been that our daughter is closer to me than she is to her mother. Well, Lourdes said something disturbing regarding our daughter recently.

Mackenzie had a meltdown when my wife tried to get her dressed for daycare, so Lourdes told me I needed to do it because of her theory that our daughter “hates her” and “the feeling is mutual.” Mackenzie has a routine of putting her clothes on in a specific order. Lourdes is aware of it, but wanted to do it her way, which set her off. Mackenzie has her quirks, and if you work with her (her daycare providers follow them and have reported no issues), everything is fine. The trouble is that my wife is accustomed to people doing things her way, and she does not react well when her expectations are not met. I’m seriously concerned about her relationship with Mackenzie, especially because right after her mother tasked me with dressing her that day, she said, “Mommy is mean.” Lourdes balked when I suggested counseling. How am I supposed to resolve this?

—Daughter Division

Part 2, Week 1

Welcome aboard for Part 2 of Mood Theme in a Year! I hope you had a good break, because we're about to break into some new moods 👍

Starting now, the Maximum and Medium Tracks diverge from the Minimum track; in Part 3, Medium and Minimum will be unified again, but Maximum will be striking out on its own for the rest of the year. Pretty exciting!

This week's Minimum moods are: Angry, Awake, Confused

This week's Medium and Maximum moods are: Stressed, Excited, Optimistic

And what a combination of moods we have to start out with here! Pretty neat that you can be Stressed, Excited, and Optimistic all at the same time. Or maybe I mean "exhausting" rather than neat 😅 Still, they're new moods to work with, and it can be fun to compare and contrast. If you're sticking around on the Maximum Track, it'll be good practice for when we get into runs of similar moods. How do Excited and Optimistic differ? How would you differentiate the two moods? How about Excited versus Stressed? Those both have the potential to be pretty high energy moods, even if they're on different ends of whether you're happy about something. Stressed and Optimistic? It doesn't really seem like they have a lot in common on the surface, but if you've been working really hard on something you still feel good about succeeding, you might just feel both of those at the same time.

What do you think? Are you ready to jump in on this week's moods, or do you wish the break had lasted a little longer? Do you expect to have any trouble with any of them, or need some inspiration? Let's talk about it!

hello

Hello and welcome to my journal. There won't be much here I'm afraid, I'm mostly here for exchanges. Pretty much all I will post is dear author letters, but thanks for stopping by!
