| Your memory is a monster; you forget — it doesn't. It simply files things away. It keeps things for you, or hides things from you — and summons them to your recall with a will of its own. You think you have a memory; but it has you. Lex Mackenna is a memory collector. When memories are forgotten or altered over the course of time, he is the one to collect the refuse, recording each in a ledgerbook or delivering them to the personification of the sort of memory to whom they may be relevant. He himself is dead, a ghost in only that respect, as he is as visible and tangible as the next person. The only ways to quit the job of memory collector are resignation or being caught directly tampering with a memory for any reason. Somewhere between eighty and ninety years of employment, Lex has yet to go either route. Generally reserved and not prone to any significant emotional outbursts, Mackenna has always been something of a drifter — not directly opposed to staying in one place for a long period of time but more comfortable going from place to place, diner to diner. Quiet though he is, he isn't abrasive or cold, finding it too difficult to fully distance himself from the memories that he picks up. All that said, he prefers a solid fight to having to go through an argument. |
