Hey guys! Can anyone consult me on this?

As far as I see this community isn't very active but I'm still going to ask you. I have to organise a computer-based video surveillance system. Thing is that I need to use multiple sources (cameras) with 20-30+ meters cables. I know for sure that my software Xeoma does support use of multiple sources but I'm not sure whether usb hubs and such long cables will still output any signals from my far-away cams. Is there a way to find it out (apart from actually trying it?)

display issues, still.

Figured I'd make a new post instead of editing my entire previous post. Sorry if that's not allowed.

Flickering monitor

Question/Problem: Laptop monitor flickers to black when opening a program (such as Firefox). Stops flickering (or is unnoticeable) when program is in use; however, minimizing the program and moving the mouse causes brief flickers. EDIT: see other edit below, sorry!

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Windows XP SP2

Web Browser and Version: Firefox 3.0.11

Your level of experience (we simplify or explain instructions based on how you answer): Between intermediate and seasoned? I don't know every single thing about computers but I know quite a bit.

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then? Literally about twenty minutes ago. I thought it might have been (unlikely as it may seem) a plugin I just installed for Firefox right before it started flickering, but I uninstalled that plugin and it still flickered when I re-opened Firefox. However, as mentioned above, it stopped flickering once FF was opened. EDIT: I spoke (or typed) too soon; it just flickered a few times when I had FF open. I'm thinking it might be the backlight?

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? Not yet, as I'm sure it would involve opening up my laptop somehow, which I am paranoid about doing. I doubt it's the battery as I always run my laptop on AC power.

If you are receiving an error message, please include the entire text of the message. (If you have an error log, please post it under a LJ-Cut): No error message.

Question/Problem: I used to have a Lenovo R60 that I got through my university, but it was "used irresponsibly" by a roommate and got all sorts of viruses and was never the same. I decided to get a new computer (HP g60) a few days ago after the backlight burnt out. There are a few features that I am missing on this new computer that I found convenient on the Lenovo.

Is there a way to get a "chime" to sound when the AC cord is plugged/unplugged? I.e., when I pull the power dealie out of the jack, or the cat knocks the cable out of the power strip, a little chime sounds to let me know this... and the same for when you plug it back in.

Also, is there a way to get an on-screen display to show the brightness level, volume, etc? When using the keyboard shortcuts on the Lenovo, these little icons would pop up and show the volume or LCD brightness, etc.

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Vista Home Premium SP1

Your level of experience (we simplify or explain instructions based on how you answer): Experienced? I'm not a super-geek, but I'm by no means helpless.

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I've tried the Help & Support and Googling, but I can't manage to figure out keywords that lead me to anything other than forum posts telling me to use the sound icon in the taskbar.  I'm open to solutions within the system itself or small, free utilities from the web.

Help me, Livejournal, you're my only hope.

Oh look! Another vista problem! Surprise!

Question/Problem: I'm constantly having a problem with my display driver. My screen will go completely blank for a few seconds, then come back with this error:
Photobucket
Sound, programmes, etc run fine in the background- but I can't see them! (luckily I'm not a gamer lol)
I've managed to find lots of posts online of others having this issue, but no fixes.
If all else fails, I'll tkae the computer to the shop again (still under warranty) but without a car, and living down a steep path, this is a mission I'd rather avoid!

Operating System, Version and Service Pack: Vista

Web Browser and Version: Firefox 3....something

Your level of experience: Seasoned-ish, though I'm more a software guru than hardware

When did the problem start? Has it been going on constantly since then? A few months back. It seems to have gotten more frequent lately but that might just be me getting frustrated with it

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? I wouldn't know where to start, honestly

Also, while I'm at it... have any of your programmer-type people ever have AVG suddenly decide that Eclipse is a virus and eat it? Me: O.O WTF!?! *kick* I don't think it likes the word gamymede.

External monitor problem?

Hi everyone,

After a lot of drama with my old laptop, I have finally gotten it back and need to hook it up to an external display to get my files off and onto my new laptop.  It's a Sony Vaio (I can find the model number if necessary) running Windows XP.  When I plug my monitor in (Dell), the Vaio logo show on the screen, followed by the Windows XP intro screen and progress bar.  After that, the Dell monitor simply has a floating box that says, "Dell Self Test Feature Check" with red, green, blue, and white samples.

Does anyone know how I can my login screen to load, or anything to load after the intro screen?  Is it a problem with incompatibility with the brands, perhaps?  Should I just remove my hard drive from the Sony and put it into my desktop to obtain the files?

Web browser:  Mozilla Firefox for all of my systems.
Level of experience:  Seasoned
Duration:  All problems?  Since May.  This particular?  About an hour ago.

I've Googled what the problem could potentially be; but all I can find are Dell-centric issues.  I've also seen a lot of forum posts about people having trouble with Sony laptops and external displays.  Woohoo!

Thanks in advance!

where to buy parts?

This should hopefully be an easy answer for somebody. I need to know where to buy something called a "power supply board" for my monitor. Unless they are expensive and it would be cheaper to replace the whole thing.

Background:

I have a hp pavilion f1503 monitor. It had been doing the blacking out thing for a while, and eventually just stopped coming back on. The f1703 (which is just larger than the 1503) had a recall because of the same problem, but not the one I have. Mine is no longer covered on warranty. I found several websites online that said the problem was pretty easily fixed if you knew how to cold solder (which I do not,) but my bf's brother does all that stuff for a living. I printed all the pages for him (about the f1503 and f1703 issues) and asked him to take a look. He told me the problem was actually the power supply board. He said he can still fix it, but I need a new one. I tried googling "power supply board" with my monitor name, but did not come up with anything that made sense.

Any suggestions? Is it even possible to buy just this one part?

Thank you!!!

Multiple Monitors

Problem: My laptop won't allow me to add a second display. Instead, this message pops up:

"The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. You may not have appropriate administrative rights to change these settings."

I close that:

"The display settings being saved are invalid. Please try a different combination of display settings."

When it started: The night previous, I had been using a second display (a tv) to watch DVD's via my laptop. I have been doing this for almost a year now. This morning, when I try to do the same thing, on the same tv, using the same methods, those messages pop up. Also, my primary, aka, my laptop monitor, is now listed as monitor number 2 (though it is still working, thank goodness). I think this is in conjunction with the problems.
I have not installed or uninstalled anything between when it worked and stopped working.

What I've done to fix it:I am the administer. I have checked, and double checked. I have logged out, logged back in, shut down, restart (with the tv plugged in and not) run anti-virals and spyware and used System Mechanic to find problems. It's all clean. I have checked my video driver to make sure it's working (NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600) and checked for updates.
