Someone pointed out to me recently that there's enough smart and talented and powerful people here that if getting out was going to be accomplished quickly and easily, we wouldn't still be here. This situation is a long-term sort of thing, where we need to devote some energy to actually living here, and not simply hyperfocus on the work of getting out. Self-governance might be a part of that. Settling down and finding ways to improve the environment, also. Figuring out if there's a way to work within the glitched economy. We just need to start thinking about what engaging with the reality of living within Svelte looks like, some. Food for thought, that's all.

People are resilient. We're very good at learning to adjust to circumstances. Even horrible ones, even ones that are topsy turvy, through the looking glass. The mind is a beautiful thing made for self-preservation. I'm interested in hearing more about your experience, and what 'living like citizens' means in practice to you.

Part of me wants to quibble the word 'settlers', because it's tied to colonialism in my mind. We're not coming to subjugate the NPCs and tame the city, and this still isn't by choice. But that's all pedantry in response to the situation itself; I'm frustrated and want something to quibble about. And I know what you mean, trying not to think about it. I've been avoiding it too.

To a point that would require people all being on the same page about rules for the city, who they think should be in charge.

We might get a little more traction if instead of some kind of mayor, we have a committee so different voices are heard as a whole.

Oh, I absolutely and totally agree there shouldn't be one single leader for this city. That way lies madness.

You're not wrong, we could be here for years, and a single person in charge is objectively a bad idea here. For the reason you pointed out, but also because we need multiple viewpoints representative of the differing cultures people are coming from here.

Do we really need a government? It's not that serious, is it?

I'm not sure I'm saying, necessarily, that we need a government in the traditional sense. But we need...accountability? Ways to take care of one another? To know who to go to when shit hits the fan?

No one's going to take a suggestion like that seriously unless there are benefits to complying, and deterrents for not complying. You can't assume people will go along with an idea just because it's prudent.

Not assuming they will. I'm just throwing out an idea, and if someone who knows anything about how to work with people can make it into anything, good. I'm not the right person to implement this.

You sound like me. I think I even used the word complacent, too, when making this argument. But that's how people burn themselves out. The argument isn't in any way 'give up on finding a way out', it's just that we need to acknowledge that after four months here, we need to recognize it's a marathon, not a sprint.

It'd be easier to live here if there was a stable economy, too, which we should try and improve, but that'd be really hard and likely require figuring out the code for that.

That's going to be a bitch of a glitch to fix, but you're not wrong, that's a particular issue.

The real question is: Will people who have come to a location with no rules and periodic chaos, follow whatever sort of guidelines are put into place?

It is an interesting thought, I don't disagree. But I'm uncertain how it would be implemented.

Less opposed to settling in than I was before, not that I particularly have anything I'm needing to get back to; but as I believe has been pointed out, convincing so many beings from so many backgrounds to agree on much of anything rarely works out in anyone's favour.

It's a nice thought, though.

It's the best thought I have at this point. But we'll see what comes next. Maybe someone will take these ideas and run with them. Maybe it'll be forgotten. Who knows?
