Inspiration
Education is vital to our society; "The pen is mightier than the sword." Teachers are the ones who give us the pen. Figuratively and literally. However, teacher funding for students has commonly been cut down in several districts and the total budget for supplies may be less for the same number of students. PayTeach aims to provide the tools for teachers to easier track, analyze, and visualize their budget.
What it does
PayTeach is an webapp designed for teachers to visualize all their expenditures clearly and quickly. The calendar is used to track the when, the table is used to track the what, and the graphs are used to track how much expenditures. With these features, teachers will have a record of what they spent on their budget and may plan accordingly for the future.
How we built it
We used several languages for our webapp. For the front end, we used React JS. The back end was developed with Flask and MongoDB.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was honing into the most vital ideas our team could take on. There were numerous directions that we could have developed PayTeach but ultimately, due to time constraints and inexperience, we had to prioritize main features over other, more complex ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
"Nous sommes fier de tout." As our French teammate put it, we're proud of everything. No matter how small or large, an accomplishment is an accomplishment. It should be noted, however, that we're especially proud we pulled through despite everything.
What we learned
As most of our team members were beginners, we had a slower start in developing PayTeach. Our idea was the only constant throughout the process as we had many unexpected obstacles. One of our team members had to drop out due to an emergency while our webapp had a bug that crashed the entire site. However, these rough experiences taught us a lot when it came to creating a webapp and to being adaptable to ever-changing circumstances.
What's next for PayTeach
PayTeach strives to restructure our society's classroom conditions. First, we aim to find the average amount of money that should be spent on school supplies per student based on the data collected from teachers across the nation and eventually, the globe. Second, we would like to send surveys through the webapp to these teachers to obtain their professional experience of underfunding and overfunding in certain areas. Lastly, PayTeach aims to publish this data every year to advocate for greater, effective expenditures to improve the overall educational experience of the world.
