Inspiration

Our inspiration comes from looking at the world around us. As we looked outside our homes we see the streets covered with trash and the most devastating part was that people were ignoring it. So we came together and thought about our own impact and how we too were also a part of the problem and realized that the reason why everyone ignores the trash ridden streets is that there is no motive. Humans always care about what they gain from doing something, however picking up trash only has demerits in many people’s eyes so to combat this we made a site to help promote picking up trash through an award system.

What it does

PickupTrash is a website focused on getting people out into the world helping to make it trash free one piece at a time. Our site prompts users to login to display their weekly impact on the environment by having streaks depending on if you displayed an image of litter in the wild through machine learning. This promotes healthier impact on the environment encouraging people to pick up litter while on the go.

How we built it

The app was built with a combination of the following technologies: Frontend React Native (Expo) Backend Express.js Prisma Sqlite 3.0

Challenges we ran into

Unable to get all intended features into the project in time for the hackathon. Shortage of members and one our member unfortunately had to go through surgery.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Got a working site with all the base features we wanted implemented.

What we learned

We learned a lot about machine learning.

We learned a lot of things about frontend as well as backend web development especially in react

What's next for PickupTrash

Improve user experience by fixing any bugs that may occur, better GUI, and have the plant grow based on streak.

Get notifications working.

Add a shop type system where users gain coins from completing their daily tasks to be able to purchase cosmetics
