How to do things with citation?
■ „Every sign, linguistic or nonlinguistic, spoken or written (in the current sense of this opposition), in a small or large unit, can be cited“ put between quotation marks; in so doing it can break with every given context, engendering an infinity of new contexts in a manner which is absolutely illimitable. This does not imply that the mark is valid outside of a context, but on the contrary that there are only contexts without any center or absolute anchoring [ancrage]. This citationality, this duplication or duplicity, this iterability of the mark is neither an accident nor an anomaly, it is that (normal/abnormal) without which a mark could not even have a function called „normal.“ What would a mark be that could not be cited?“
„For, ultimately, isn’t it true that what Austin excludes as anomaly, exception, „non-serious”, citation (on stage, in a poem, or a soliloquy) is the determined modification of a general citationality – -or rather, a general iterability-without which there would not even be a „successful“ performative?“
From ancient time, the people has seen patterns in the night sky, which they named constellations. They were useful for the orientation of the sailors or in prediction of the seasonal river floodings. Where are we nowadays? In October 2016, students and teachers of our faculties will meet for a double conference “Reviving Visions: Artists and Scholars that connected East and West” in Cologne. Our students will meet on October 7 to present their discoveries—places, ideas, personalities, traditions and visions—that can help us to create a space of learning and scholarship that connects Eastern and Western traditions. They will present their findings and ideas to senior scholars of all three universities at Schloss Wahn on October 10 and 11.
