Growing up, he and Dean had a middle class life. Mary died when they were young, and John turned to alcohol in a big, and terrible, way. He was also big into being a survivalist, taking the boys out and teaching them how to take care of themselves just in case.
When Sam was young, he was fascinated with the paranormal. There were many times he tried to contact his mother through a Ouija board, and he would beg Dean to help him out. Sam's always had a bit of a mother complex, since his memories of her are vague and fuzzy. John died when the boys were in their twenties, and left their family home to them in his will.
While he grew up, he studied hard in school and managed to get into Harvard Law. He worked his ass off to graduate, and did so with honors. Now, he has a job in New York working in Public Interest Law - helping out low income families, working in legal aid clinics and not making a whole lot of money.
His interest in the paranormal is still there, just beneath the surface. By day, he is an average, overworked lawyer. On the side he does all kinds of things - ghost hunting, helping people exorcise their homes, cramming his head with whatever he can find when it comes to the paranormal. He has connections in a city college that allow him to use some space and have a few funds to go toward his research. In exchange, he teaches a few courses over the summer in law school for students who are having trouble.
His adult life has been consumed with work and his paranormal interests, which means most relationships he has with people - romantic or platonic - have fallen to the wayside something fierce. Dean's basically one of his few human connections, other than the people he helps through his legal work or his ghostly work.
Someone needs a vacation.
HOW UNFORTUNATE THAT HE ENDS UP GETTING SUSPENDED.
And I haven't worked out the details of it, but suffice it to say he steps on the wrong toes and ends up taking the blame for a case going south. Not to mention someone at the school brings complaints up about funds going to his research when it's ridiculous (in their eyes okay) so he ends up with no research going and no job for a while.
THIS IS WHY THE GHOSTBUSTERS FORM I GUESS? They sell the house and live in the fire station.

Lisa grew up in New York City, an only child, and had been involved with gymnastics and dance from an early age. She was on her drill squad in high school and attended Dance New Amsterdam afterwards. During that time Lisa was just as dedicated to dance as she was to enjoying herself and had a thing for hanging around biker bars.
At DNA in addition to her dance training, she became a certified yoga instructor, which is what pays the bills at the moments. She's a part-time dancer with Parsons Dance Company but she hopes to go full time, so she spends most of her free time at the studio.
In the past year, she's found her dream apartment in upper Manhattan in an old gothic building. Too bad some of the neighbors are a little odd.
KIND OF BARE BONES YEAH. Also more than willing to accommodate a Ben!
