I'm annoyed. I'm frustrated. I've got a Problem. But this is not a "the world is so unfair to me" complaint. This is my own mess, from my own carelessness, so I'm complaining about me. But I still feel a need to blow off steam, and it's my own journal, so...

I got some money for the last few gigs, and some money from my mom to deal with car stuff, and I deposited it in one of my two credit unions. Then I went to write checks and discovered that:

  1. the pad of checks I was using stopped at xx80 instead of on a multiple of 25, which I'd forgotten because I hadn't used that account for a while,
  2. the shelf with a box of checks on it only had checks for the other credit union, not this one (I'm still convinced that replacement checks are somewhere in the house, but I can't figure out where else I would've put them),
  3. that's the account I don't have an ATM card for,
  4. I have a couple of overdue bills that Really Must Get Paid Soon, and I have to pay MVA for car registration.
This sucketh mightily. And if I'd looked at the pad of checks in my purse and noticed that I only had one check left, then gone to make sure I knew where the next pad was, before deciding to deposit the money to that account instead of the other one (I had a reason for doing so, but I didn't absolutely have to), then I wouldn't be in this pickle. Instead, I noticed I was out of checks when I used the last check. (There were enough deposit slips in the back of that pad to make it feel plenty thick.)

*grumble*

What a pain in the butt.

Maybe you could go into the bank and make a withdrawal since your account # is on the deposit slips, and then take the cash and buy money orders to pay the bills (or give cash to a friend and have the friend write checks). I know the bank usually wants you to write a check to withdraw cash through a teller but maybe if you explain your circumstances they can help. Of course, you would have to wait until after your last deposit went through.
Checks take weeks to come in after you order, don't they? I don't remember; I only have to order them every few years. It's so easy to forget to do it.

Lots of luck!

Money order? Cashier's check? Pay by phone?

Good luck, I totally agree you have the right to "whine".

I personally went for years without writing a cheque to withdraw money from my bank. It just never occured to me that you'd write a cheque to get money for yourself, cuz cheques are for giving money to *other* people. As far as getting new cheques is concerned, I think it only took eight days last timr I needed new checks (I thought I'd lost my fanny pack (american usage of the word!) and closed my account and opened a new one). YMMV my bank was 1st Virginia/ now BB&T

your bank should be willing to help you out on this. they'll have blank generic "checks" you can use -- just go in and explain the situation and ask. it'll be no problem at all.

Banks have generic checks for new accounts; can you apply that solution to your current problem?

The check places that advertise in newspapers usually claim an express option (for extra money). I've never used that, and I ususally get my checks in a week or so.

You should be able to withdraw money from your account by just ahnding the teller your ID and a withdrawal slip with the account number on it. I know my bank has my signature on file in the computer and can call it up in just a few seconds to verify it. Also if you explain to the bank that you are out of checks, they can probably give you a few temporary ones until you order more.
If the bank wont let you take your own money out, it's time to find a new bank.

Do you have on-line banking through the credit union where you deposited the money? Or can any of the bills be paid on-line by a credit card, or a direct transfer from your credit union account?

Can you add that account to your PayPal?

I hope you have an ATM card for paypal. That would give you the card for both.

What everyone else said - money orders. In fact, you usually don't have to withdraw the cash first if you request MOs- however they are less expensive from the post office than most banks, so withdrawing cash and then getting them at the PO may be cheaper.
