NationStates Landfills: Glitch Perspective
Over at NationStates, the Borderlands of PurpleJourney is facing a dilemma: its landfills are filling up. I am told that "After claims of two-headed fireflys being seen near the numerous landfills of PurpleJourney, there have been calls for the government to act."
I... don't have a problem with two-headed "fireflys." I think two-headed creatures are a fine and Glitchy thing. However, in the interest of placating my citizenry, I will consider the various aspects of the issue.
I've been given the following options:
Option 5: Reject all of those; Borderlands of PurpleJourney continues to have mounting landfills and complaints.
Worth noting: the *actual* result of any of these choices is "a line of text in PJ's activity description, and some change in its tax/politics/economic numbers." NationStates is a text-based game; the only activity is choosing options for the issues, and the occasional change of settings (I now have a capital city and a leader, and I can change those at will). So the real issue is "which of these options will bring the politco-economic shifts I'd prefer?" However, with issues that remind me of Glitch, I try to pick the option that most reminds me of Glitch, or that creates a change that I think is most Glitchlike.
I may sit on this a few days while I sort out what that is. The NationStates Solved Issuescheat site blog doesn't have this issue listed (people add new issues all the time), so I don't have an easy way to find out what the practical effects are (although I've been playing long enough that I can guess: Option 1 increases taxes; Option 2 gives money, costs environmentally; Option 3 has environmental and happiness costs; Option 4 brings in money. These may have descriptions like "Garbage collectors make top dollar as astronauts" or "Tourists visit GarbageLand.") I can let the issue wait as long as I like; there's a maximum of 5 pending issues at a time (right now, this is my only one), but no penalty for having them wait.

"Look at that thing!" wails famous environmentalist Emily Chicago, pointing at one of PurpleJourney's largest dumps. "It's an eyesore, a pollutant, and a damn disgrace! What we need to do is get everyone recycling their waste! What we have left we can shoot into space in specially-made space shuttles and we'll never have to think about it again! Sure it'll be expensive, but considering the benefits to the great outdoors, I think we should consider it."Option 1: Toxic Moon. Promising.
"Ah, the expense!" moans Jacob Neumann, government economist. "Do you have any idea what that would cost?! A much better way of dealing with this waste is to burn it and use the energy it produces to power PurpleJourney's big cities. There may be a few side-effects on the environment, but with all the cheap power coming in who would care?"Option 2: A Hearty Power Plant, and constant easy production of Hot 'n' Fizzy Sauce. Also promising.
"Oh come now," says Rebecca Tan, a nearby suburbanite. "There's no need to bring all the pollution into the cities! These dumps can get a whole lot bigger you know. Just keep piling the rubbish on and we can use them as tourist attractions or something. People will flock to see how high they can climb our artificial mountains! If we run out of space, just knock down a few forests. No one will notice."Option 3: Recreate end-game Cebarkul. Nicely nostalgic, no matter how high the piles get.
"You're all missing the real solution," argues Buffy Firefly, president of the 'PurpleJourney First!' society. "Why should we bother building landfills at all? I'm sure that there are plenty of less-fortunate countries out there who would be more than happy to take our litter in return for some cash."Option 4: Bring back auctions. I miss Glitchy auctions.
