Morning mews get cat lovers out of bed faster than their first sip of coffee.

Felines run the house; every cat lover knows that. The moment a person comes home from the animal shelter, the humane society, or the local Walmart parking lot with a kitty cat in their arms, they must be prepared for their entire life to change… for the better, of course. Although cats bring along with them a sense of chaos and cute mischief, they also remain in a purrmanent state of human heart melting, using their meows and cuddles to hypnotize the human race into serving them for a lifetime. And believe you me, it's working!

Like royal meowmbers of the kitty purrlament, cats have elected themselves the rulers of the household. Maybe they run the home with an iron paw, demanding extra portions of wet food and pawing at their toy box in the middle of the night to coerce the humans to awaken and play with them, but cats provide more than a strict schedule of meals, play, and sleep time: They give us infinite love, too.

Some people crave chocolate, others cake, but us? When we're craving something sweet, we turn to cats to curb our cuteness craving.

It's rare to meet someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth. There are some weirdos who prefer savory things, but for us normal people, we get cravings for anything with sugar in it. And no, fruit doesn't count. Chocolate, cookies, cake pops, pie, ice cream, you name it, we could always nom nom nom on it. It's biological - our bodies crave sugar because sugar = carbohydrates, carbohydrates = energy, and energy = staying alive. The only thing is that when we evolved to have this craving, we didn't have access to unlimited amounts of pastries and sweet delicacies at our fingertips.

But, like hoomans do, we seem to have evolved again. Knowing that if we gave in to our sugary desires every time we had a craving, we would be at least 300 lbs., we have found a trick that helps us curb our cravings with something else that's pawsitively sweet and curiously cute: cats! It's not the same as savoring a delicious bite of chocolate cake, but it gets the job done thanks to our love of all things feline.

These kitty cuties are a sugar rush of feline furbulousness, from floofy kitties to awwdorable cat memes that are like a soul-nourishing bite of wholesomeness. And, of course, it wouldn't be complete without a little bit of cat comedy, so prepurr for some giggles as well as plenty of awww's.

Have a purrfectly wonderful day, full of sweetness, cuteness, and feline fun!

Cats are just like people - they bond with the ones who actually try to understand them.

It's easy to call a cat "difficult" when you don't make an effort to understand it. Simply expecting a cat to waltz into your life and fit right in is unrealistic. The cat will have to make adjustments for you, and you will have to make adjustments for the cat, just like with anyone else. People who don't understand cats wouldn't get half of the completely normal things that they do on a daily basis. They wouldn't understand that cats trying to sneak food off your plate behind your back is normal, that cats screaming at closed doors and then not wanting to go through when you open them is normal, the fact that cats having zoomies and running across your face in the middle of the night sometimes it - yes - normal.

All of these things are simply a part of who our cats are. And we accept them just as they are. The cat in this story, who was labeled "difficult" by the shelter that it was returned to didn't deserve that label. It just needed to find someone who actually attempted to understand.

Cats recognize kindness, and once they do, they do not let it slip out of their paws.

We have always known that cats are smart. Just from our personal experience with them. We know that they recognize when we feel down, which shows their emotional intelligence. We know that they know exactly when they are supposed to be fed and when their favorite snacks are opened, which shows general intelligence. But we only knew that about our cats. We've always thought that stray cats had to be different in this sense, but over time, we have learned that stray cats… might even be smarter than house cats.

Stray cats have street smarts. They need it to be able to survive out there in the dangerous world all alone. Our cats are spoiled. They only need to know us and our habits to be able to meownipulate us with their cuteness. Stray cats though, they have developed a sense of recognizing kindness. It why, more often than not, it is enough to feed a stray cat once for that cat to suddenly start coming back regularly. They haven't developed any kind of bond to you - not yet, they are just checking you out and seeing if you are going to feed them again. And if you do…

Living outside is hard, and if you take one look at your house cat, then you know that cats love being spoiled. Why fight for every meal and shelter when you can be at home, served every time you meow? Life is so much easier that way. Especially when you have a bunch of itty bitty kitties to take care of. Cats know this. And once they find that person who shows them kindness - even just once - they make the best out of it.

That is purrcisely what happened in this story. A man fed a stray cat, that cat instantly recognized the goldmine in front of it, and what did the cat do? The cat brought his girlfriend. And then, the two of them together brought their hoard of kittens with them. And the man? Well, the man was chosen, and that means that he was left with no choice but to make room for all of the cats.

it is one of the cutest things in the world for us to see people just accept their fates like this man did. The initial shock was there, but the love for cats was much stronger. And now, his garage became a cat sanctuary for more than 20 kitties.

A followup to yesterdays post!

Photo by Wildlife Response Animal Care Specialist Savannah, via Alaska SeaLife Center - they write:

Snow day + crab legs = Cali’s great day! (pronounced “Cha-Lee”)

Cali is one of four rehabilitated otter pups currently receiving care at the ASLC. All four were found orphaned earlier this summer, and all required around-the-clock care from our team.

Because sea otter pups rely heavily on their mothers to learn how to forage, groom, and survive in the wild, orphaned pups admitted at under six months are not candidates for release. Cali, Un'a, Nipi, and Imaq are slowly acclimating to human care and their future as ambassadors for their species, while continuing to receive any veterinary care they need.

The moment it snows, every cat turns into a purrito.

The second it starts snowing, cats enter full purrito mode. One look at the cold outside and they're already burrowing into the nearest blanket like they're preparing for hibernation. The goal is simple. Stay wrapped up, stay warm, and do not acknowledge the existence of snow.

Blankets get pulled into service immediately. You'll find them rolled up tight, tucked into throws, or wrapped in sweaters like tiny burritos that refuse to come undone. Only a nose or an ear might be visible. Everything else is safely hidden away from the cold.

They don't want to see the snow, and they definitely don't want the snow seeing them. Windows get a quick inspection from inside the blanket before they disappear again. Laundry piles become insulation. Hoodies left on chairs turn into emergency shelters.

Once they're fully wrapped, that's it. The purrito is sealed. Any attempt to unwrap them will be met with a slow blink and a deeper curl. Moving would mean facing the cold, and they've already decided against that.

For the rest of the day, it's just a series of tightly wrapped cats rotating between naps. Snow can do whatever it wants outside. Inside, it's warm, soft, and purrito season.

Cats are weird little creatures, and yet here are - adoring their every whiskery weirdo deed.

As we should. Cats are to be worshiped, as the kings and queens they are, who rule our lives with an iron paw. Even medieval emperors adored their cats, so who are we to dispute that? But that doesn't change the fact that cats, these beings we admire so, are fluffing weirdos. They will literally scream on blank walls, try to parkour on your ceiling at odd hours of the night, and insist on napping on your laptop right when you have an important meeting (and let's see you dare to move them).

But let's see if your cat, who's definitely weird in their own way, beats the complete coo-cooness of this one. He dips his cat toys in the toilet water. But wait, there's more! This is, most definitely, done in good faith. No, it's not that the cat thinks the toys are dirty - he gives them as moist gifts to his stunned human, delivering them right on her bed. Thoughtful. And you think she just accepts it? This human tried everything to stop this strange gift-giving from happening to no avail.

You have to see it to believe it. But what we always know, with seeing or not, is that cats are weird. So, so, so weird. But honestly? We wouldn't have them any other way.

We always say that cats rule our houses with an iron paw, but we don't actually think that they should be judges in a court.

Listen, we think that cats are amazing. We think that they are capable, smart, and should not be underestimated. They may look tiny and small, but inside those fluffy little heads of theirs lie thoughts of chaos and crime. All cats are criminals. And their crimes vary from stealing food off our plates right under our noses, with no regard for the consequences, and while maintaining eye contact with us the whole time, all the way to breaking into banks and sending the police on chases.

It may be an amusing thought- to imagine a cat sitting in the courtroom, on jury duty, deciding whether we are guilty of some crime or not, but in reality, we know that our cats would sell us out for a can of tuna and not even think about it. Of course, that is not the reason that this cat was removed from the jury duty that it was summoned for. Sal was removed because… well, Sal is a cat. And in the words of his owner, "When they ask him guilty or not guilty? What's he supposed to say - meow?"

A cat was not on the grocery list.

A regular trip to the grocery store turned into an unexpected kitten rescue when this little guy was spotted sleeping on the side of the road. He was dirty, hungry, and clearly had been out there for a while, but still sweet enough to let a stranger walk right up and pet him. After finishing the shopping run and sending a heads up to the family group chat, the mission became getting him home.

He was still there on the way back, although not without a bit of chaos. At one point there was crawling under a parked car involved after he got spooked and ran to hide. Eventually he was scooped up and brought inside, where he quickly settled in after some food and a wipe-down. A proper wash later on made a big difference, and he's already looking like a completely different cat. He's been spending most of his time loafing around or cuddling up with whoever's nearby.

It does look like his tail was cut at some point, which is upsetting to see, but thankfully he's safe now. He's met the other kittens and seems content to either hang out solo or find a human to nap next to. A home has already been lined up for him with someone who was planning to adopt another kitten, but this little guy's calmer personality makes him a better fit.

Previous poll review
In the Fourth walls poll, 68.2% of respondents said "the one-way glass that stops TPTB seeing fannish activity" is important to them; 65.9% said "the one that shields fandom from public/media attention", and 61.4% said "the wibbly-wobby physics-defying thing that means celebs and fans exist in separate universes that just happen to occupy the same space-time". About one in five respondents love ALL the walls.

In ticky-boxes, ballooooooooons and golden sparkles won 54.5% of the vote, coming second to hugs (77.3%), but the other tickies made pretty good showings too. Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
I finished Courtney Milan's The Marquis Who Mustn't and enjoyed it very much. Such a kind, good-hearted series with a lovely sense of community and a spark of mischief. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Then I ploughed through one of my randomly selected library books, The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman. I found this a delightful read and very moreish. It's voicey, with a distractable, occasionally omniscient 3rd POV scattered with pop culture references. I appreciated it's acceptance of introversion and valuing of alone time. Also, the main character has anxiety, and it didn't really try to fix her.

Andrew and I are still slowly listening to Barrayar by Bujold, read by Grover Gardner.

Kdramas
Juuust enough has happened in One Spring Night that I'm into it. I mean, it's still going around in circles, but I'm most of the way through episode 14, and I'm definitely going to finish. The story relies heavily on respectability, parental authority, and conservative attitudes for its conflict (the leading man is a single dad, OH NO!!), which took me a while to get my head around.

Other TV
Our journey through Middle Earth continues. We're on the second disc of extras for The Two Towers, and the actors seem a bit punchy in their interviews, lol. Other than that, just The Pitt. ♥ (My brother watched a few episodes of The Pitt and said it doesn't have a plot, and I... don't know how to answer that. There are mini-storylines with the patients. The capital-P plot, maybe? such as it is? has kicked in at episode whatever-we're-up-to. I feel like it totally works without a driving plot arc, because there are character/relationship arcs, and rising tension/pacing, and theme. Maybe that's all you need?)

I'm amused that I have three streaming service subscriptions and we're spending so much time watching DVDs.

Audio entertainment
More Better Offline, Tech Won't Save Us (the one about humanoid robots), Writing Excuses, Letters from an American, Pod Save America, Cross Party Lines, Fansplaining.

Online life
From you I have been absent in the spring February, quite a lot. My reading page seems pretty quiet, and I'm still having trouble keeping up; open tabs proliferate (that's the middle line of a haiku).

Writing/making things
I'm subsisting on alibi sentences. My creativity is sitting on a bench somewhere, staring blankly into the sky.

I keep failing to post the meta about adverbs in speech tags because it's so prescriptive, and who am I to say anything?

Life/health/mental state things
I don't know what I'm doing with my life. The world (mostly as presented by the above podcasts) is freaking me out. Yesterday I made fifty chicken dumplings and talked to my brother in NY.

Good things
Dumplings. Creativity is a tide. Sunshine. Grapes. Library books. Black cat lying on the very edge of a sunbeam. Independent media and reporting.

Cats are a truly unique bunch and we have captured some of their funnier behaviors and mistakes in this cute collection of silly cats being their authentic selves.

Often we try to instill our cats with a sense of hoomanity. Perhaps it is born off our desire for them to feel more like our actual children, or perhaps we hoomans simply cannot stand being around other species. But no matter what the reason the result is the same, and we end up dressing up our cats in costumes, putting them in hooman-like situations and melting on the spot the moment they decide to cuddle with us and the little spoon to our big spoon.

But we ought to remember that our cats are purrfect just as they are in their awwthentic selves and that their weird and wonderful antics are what make them the creatures we fell in love with in the first place.

The Cat Distribution System works in mysterious ways, and sometimes like in this story it takes going against the word of others to claim the cat that is destined to be yours.

At least that is what happened to one construction worker who found himself conflicted when a cat in the neighborhood of his worksite started showing him affection. Before long he noticed that this cat was showing all the behaviors of a stray, other than the fact that it kept frequenting one particular porch. And when the man finally saw a teenager go up to said porch he enquired as to whether the cat was indeed a feral feline or if he was their pet, to which the teenager claimed the cat was hers.

However, it is hard to claim ownership of a cat when they are left to live outside, fend for their own meals and patch up their own injuries. And so this man plucked up his courage and took the cat home to help it heal and serve it up a comforting meal. Resulting in one of the sweetest CDS rescues we have seen in a while.

Somehow, despite how impossible it seems (to me, a person who has neither aged nor matured a day), it’s been almost twenty years since I first told you about my family’s favorite coffee cake. It’s tall, plush, crisp with a flaky layer of cinnamon sugar on top, studded with a quilt of chocolate chips and is downright, well, adorable when cut into cubes because they’re a little wobbly. When one tumbles, it shakes off a little pfft of cinnamon sugar, like a pup coming in from today’s blizzard. It’s perfect. It needs no changes or updates.

Do you think cats know when their furever human comes along?

To say that humans are the ones who adopt their cats is quite a false statement, and cat owners would probably agree. Most of the time, the cat is the one who adopts the human, and they sure do not make it easy. We are pretty sure that cats have a very clear system they must follow before they allow themselves to get adopted, and no one knows what it is or how it works. All we know is that cats do everything to ensure that they end up in the right time and place to get themselves found by their forever humans, and they do not take that, or anything related to the cat distribution system, lightly.

How many people do you think a stray kitten sees pass through before they select the one they want to spend the rest of their lives with? How many people do you think the tiny 4-week-old kitten in the story below let walk past him before he decided to chase the person who would later become his loving pawrent?

We will never know the answer to these questions, but at least we know that whatever calculations go behind a cat's choice, and the workings of the cat distribution system, they must be working. Because cats find a home every single day, and the kitten below found the purrfect human to take care of him and welcome him to the family. Keep scrolling to read the full story.
