[002] - [voice] - Day 44
[Getting some fresh air while the sun's still up despite the weather, Locke's sitting somewhere relatively dry and watching with interest where the merchants have docked on the shore. (It would be a lie to say part of him wasn't tempted to put his skills to work there. But after seeing the state of the merchants themselves he hadn't had the heart to even try to rob them.) With things on the relatively quiet side for the past few days, there's been a lot more time for him to do some thinking.]
So, when people die here...sometimes they come back.
[A statement of fact, rather than a question. It's pretty hard to miss. People dying only to come back good as new, or close enough. He hadn't experienced it himself, (...not yet, anyway,) but he's been around long enough to see the results. It's a touchy subject by nature, especially for someone like him, and even just from his voice it's easy to tell that he's not quite as casual about it as he's trying to sound.]
Has anyone figured out why yet? Or how, I guess I'm asking. What's making it happen. Is it some kind of magic? 'Cause I don't know about you guys, but things like that don't just happen on their own back home.
[Didn't really happen at all, not outside of the legends he'd been chasing. But he had to believe it was possible. For all the hassle getting dragged here has been, seeing some proof of concept is pretty damn encouraging. He's been looking for a way to revive the dead for years, so when faced with the opportunity, he can't help but ask:]
I don't suppose anyone's seen anything like it before?

[He tries to pass it off as a joke, but it's not a very good one. Despite the past few responses dismissing magic as a cause, no one seems to be able to give him a straight answer that doesn't involve it.]
But it was possible? Back where you came from, I mean.

Don't get any ideas.
[Joking, but he does mean it. Just because they might come back, doesn't mean he wants to see her risk it.]

You and me both. I like an adventure as much as the next guy, but think I could do with a little less mystery this time around.

[Yeah, there's something he didn't know. Now half pondering, a half talking to himself, and sorta addressing Locke as well.]
People who die...they can't come back to life. They're gone forever. There's no way, is there?
[voice]
[With more conviction than he has any right to have. He's not taking no for an answer on this, especially not after seeing it happen here. He stops himself from saying anything more for a time, long enough to remember who he's talking to and say something a little more helpful.]
...It's happened before in this place. I'd call that possible. Don't go trying it to find out, though.

Maybe. I don't know anything about midgardians. Pretty sure most people have decided the "game" thing is a load of crap.

[Hello, Maya. Getting that out of the way, first. He settles for a wry sort of smile, then explains.]
I've seen it happen a few times, since I got here. Apparently it's not all that uncommon. Wish I could work out what makes this place so special.

Someone get Terra over here.]Yeah? I-pin's a friend of yours?
[He sort of hopes so. I-pin herself is a little young for that sort of thing.]

That's-
[Terrible. Sort of the opposite of what he was going for. That can't be right. There's a choked quality to his voice before he cuts himself off, and a bit of a pause before he continues. He hadn't asked out of idle curiosity. He's got a promise to keep, and he's had years of chasing down the right bit of magic to make it possible.]
You said "usually."

[Sort of a stupid question, but he doesn't seem to notice. Blows right on past it to consider the implications. Because if it could happen to this young woman, than why not the one he's trying to save? Then, with equal parts curiosity and concern:]
Are you okay?

[Even if he's seen it a few times here, it's still difficult to imagine on a large scale. It's not the first he's heard of other places like this, though. Someone else had
come in with previous-game-historysaid something similar, not too long ago.]You make a habit of hopping from world to world?
