[Video] Week 15 | Day 3
[Palmer didn't make video entries onto the network mainly because she was pretty paranoid and didn't trust that COMPASS wasn't tracking their entries and content in some way. But for today at least, it was a fairly innocuous topic of conversation and one that she didn't care if COMPASS overheard. When the video feed clicked on, it revealed the unmasked face of the armor-clad super-soldier.]
Well now, isn't it nice of our captors to provide us with so many potential provisions? If you don't mind fighting off all manner of jungle creatures, there's definitely some bounty to be found. I've bagged some of those giant snakes and now I'm thinking it would probably feed a fair amount of people for a while if it was preserved in some way. I know back in more primitive times people would smoke meat in order to preserve it. Unfortunately, we don't do a lot of that where I come from. So I'm hoping someone knows how to do this. And if they're willing to help me out in this I'll split the supplies fifty-fifty with them.
[The Spartan twisted the video feed around abruptly to show the neatly drawn and quartered snake carcasses.] The meat isn't bad grilled but that won't keep for very long and I understand COMPASS sometimes likes to cut off our food supplies here so I figure it can't hurt.
[Palmer brought the viewfinder back so it was centered on her face once more.] Anyone interested in this venture with me? I'll hunt, you teach me how to cook it up and we'll all benefit.

It is not hard. Salt would make it easier. You will also need to cut your meat much thinner, and find wood that will burn well.
text
How much salt would I need? Does it help draw out the moisture from the meat?

There are other spices that can be added to improve taste. Is there any chance you have seen spices?

But considering the bodies I've seen in the jungle, I don't know how save foraging from that would be.

Do you mean to tell me you don't even smoke fish? You'd never survive at sea. Remind me of this moment if I ever offer to take you sailing, Commander.
video
Stormy, I grew up on a space station, I didn't even see an large body of water until I went to basic training. Though you're right, I'd never survive at sea because what bush craft they teach you, smoking meat for anything long term is sort of low on the list of priorities.
[Sarah was well aware of her own weaknesses when it came to trying to survival by such primitive means. You put a gun in her hands and tell her who to shoot and she could do it flawlessly but when it came to the more domestic side of things she was at a loss.]

Well, how would you preserve herring in space? [ Do you just excessively salt everything or... ] That seems like a useful skill regardless of why you're storing it.
By the way, you'll need saltwater brine and something on which you can burn wood. You might be able to turn one of the classrooms into something like a smokehouse, if you're lucky.
video
Uh--we don't eat a lot of herring in space. Depending on the tour you're pulling you might get crap mess hall fare with lots and lots of freeze-dried MREs or if you're really shit out of luck, the most disgusting protein bars you've ever had the bad luck to try. [This was spoken with the resigned air of someone who was speaking from first-hand experience.]
Do you really need a house in which to smoke this? I thought you could just plop it over a fire and it would dehydrate or something. [Maybe someone should introduce Sarah to the wonders of pickling instead.]

[ He can't find grilled snake or snake of any kind appetizing. Whatever happened to those cans of corn that were stored in the dormitory?
Actually, those were foul as well. Maybe he should reconsider snake as an option. ]
The kind of animals here are suspiciously sparse except for the last few days. I am surprised no one has investigated what had been killing them all off before.
video;
[The thoroughly unimpressed look on the Spartan's face was coupled with those laconic words.]
Who is to say they've been killed off? Though trying to make sense in this place seems to be an exercise in frustration.

[ ...yet anyway. He's not sure how long he'll last before her words do become agreeable to him. ]
And there are few areas that don't have some sort of animal that could be harvested for meat, especially given the temperature and the fertility of the area around us. Even more so now that there is a tropical atmosphere. It's an ideal ground for certain animals to thrive in, yet they are absent.

[That's almost as bad as that one guy who was eating those bugs that burrowed into your flesh...
Still better than military rations.]
