Video | Week 18 | Day 2 | Resistance Filter

[The video snaps on to reveal feed of a classroom. There are three large chalkboards just out of focus in the shot though they have a great deal or writing on them and a few words are distinguishable: COMPASS, CHARON, ZELIEN, PROJECT HEADS.

Any other words are blotted out by a man sitting down within the focus of the camera. His left arm is strapped to his chest in a makeshift splint, though he is using it to hold a mug of some hot beverage (yes hot, even in this heat) and he gives the camera a polite smile that does not quite reach his eyes.]

If I could have a moment of your time.

I was curious if anyone had any idea what we're doing anymore? The more we gain answers, albeit along with more questions, the more uncertain our path appears to become.

Is this because we find ourselves with choices? These 'Great Old Ones' or COMPASS? What to do about the tracks? Who has the most recipes for creamed corn? [The last is a bit sharp at the end.]

We are pawns on a chess board between two forces we do not fully understand and though we have fragments of information, there is no order that yet gives any of us a clear picture as to the intent of one side or the other. Do any of you truly believe that one is our salvation over the other? That the 'Great Old Ones' are going to deliver us from COMPASS or that COMPASS can truly continue to protect us from the threat beyond the campus borders?

Now more than ever we need each other. We need to take inventory of what we have, determine what we need, review what has been done in the past and plan for what we can do going forward.

So I ask you all, does anyone have any bloody idea how the hell we're going to survive this?

[ooc: The Resistance Filter is an IC filter developed to lock network messages away from COMPASS. The password for accessing the filters is hand-waved as being passed word of mouth so any PC in the game can have it and respond!]

Carefully.

[that's how they'll survive it, Charles. carefully. look at Steel's half-assed attempt at a joke.]

[wait, Charles, what are you trying to write. Steel swaps to voice, mostly because Charles what.]

You know, you didn't have to reply to my text with text.

It's a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils, it seems. Or you can side with no one and stand back, passively watching this little world fall apart, but that won't yield any results.

We have to take risks, no matter how much or how little we know of the entire situation. If we don't take risks, we learn nothing, and we'll still be stuck in the middle and suffering just as we have been.

Where to go from here, though...

[Hange trails off, because she doesn't know. All of their options look incredibly bleak. It's a good thing she's used to that, so at least she won't be prone to panicking at the slightest hiccup.]

I think it's pretty clear we can only trust ourselves, in the end. No Great Old Ones, no COMPASS, just...us. Which is a huge risk. Which is the best we can do, in my opinion.

We reduce the risk with good communication, as well as readiness and vigilance. If we know what we need to know when we need to know it, then it cuts back on chaos and confusion. Of course, we can't eliminate risk altogether - that would be too good to be true - but taking precautions definitely helps. Which, of course, means that someone or some people need to be in charge of a plan and then setting it in motion, so it's still complicated and may take some time to perfect if we want to take the less risky fork in the road.

[She slips a hand in her hair as she sighs, then pulls it back out, loosening some of her hair from her ponytail in the process, but she doesn't seem to notice, or care.]

In short, it's a pain in the ass.

[As for Charles' second question, Hange's answer is not as forthcoming. She falls quiet, thinking of humanity and human nature that she's seen. And, sometimes, she's not all that confident in other people. Humans can be terrible and cruel and selfish. One just has to look at the government in her own world to understand how much sense it doesn't make and how it hurts their own people, the last of their people.

But on the other hand she's seen the goodness in humanity, how they can pull together in times of crisis and get the job done, regardless of...well, anything. She's seen the look in her own soldiers' eyes when all seems hopeless, but the first still burns in them, as if their very souls were a weapon to turn the tide. She's seen Eren.

When she speaks again, her voice is soft, sincere.]

...I do believe that. Maybe not at this very moment, but when the time comes, I'm sure we'll see how desperately we want to survive.

Neither side has our interests at heart. But that doesn't mean we can't use the local resentment towards COMPASS to our advantage. It doesn't mean we're taking their side. We're just using the resources available to us.

I'd imagine so. But they're not getting to us except through COMPASS. One enemy to focus our attention on is better than two.

--oh, this thing works!

[ Someone is new to this filter business. She seems excited by the fact that it actually works, though. ]

I don't think COMPASS cares about protecting us, but I still think we should at least give the Old Ones a chance. Has anyone actually talked to them yet? I'm still trying.

Why would you want to talk to the cultists? They won't help us. I want to talk to the gods themselves!

The problem isn't that we have choices, but that none of those choices are good. While the two sides are at a standstill, our position is improved, but once either side gives in, we will be at the mercy of the victor. Something must be done to improve our odds of survival before that happens, and to do that we must find a way to fight back against COMPASS or the Old Ones when the time comes.

Until then, I suppose we could try and figure out some way to maximize the damage each side does to the other, so when our time comes to face them they'll be weakened.

Precisely? No. However, the fact that they need to get through the wall will wear them down some, I hope. Steve seems week and vulnerable, and keeping him that way would be to our advantage, but I doubt he's high ranking in COMPASS's eyes, so it will not win us the battle to do him harm. For now...all I can think to do is wait, and ensure no one who could potentially be sacrificed to the cult's gods can fall into their hands. We should prepare for a fight and, perhaps, ask Steve's advice in how to fight them. The more information we can get from him on how to defend ourselves, the less we will be reliant on COMPASS in the long run.

I would suggest that keeping our mutual friend alive is a form of movement itself.

We are waiting for the wall to fade as is. I would rather we not be forced into a move, that we should have a plan. I am unfortunately rather useless in most capacities unless you want him (or is it them?) listening in. If you can find a way for me to be of use, however, I would gladly take it.

Eventually, the reason that we have given for keeping him safe will be invalid in the eyes of most.

It seems for every cultist that is killed, ten more return. I doubt their hydra-like regeneration will stop once the barrier breaks. Should we focus on finding a way to keep the children and disabled safe while making fortifications for the fight?

We have to fight them both to survive. The cultists aren't going to be better than COMPASS.

[ Excuse Ivan if he sounds a little rough and angry. Between what they did to Sheena, to Barnaby, and more recently Kaede, Ivan doesn't have any hope in the cultists being a potential ally. ]

I was talking with Erik earlier... Do you think it's possible to reinforce one of the buildings on the campus for when the barrier falls?

[ "When" is a key word here. "If" has no place in that sentence. ]

As far as I'm aware, the plan was to rebuild the train tracks, and then - work from there. [ belle isn't sure how enthused she is about that. happy about power and actual food, yes. however, everything else... ]
