Video | Week 18 | Day 2 | Resistance Filter
[The video snaps on to reveal feed of a classroom. There are three large chalkboards just out of focus in the shot though they have a great deal or writing on them and a few words are distinguishable: COMPASS, CHARON, ZELIEN, PROJECT HEADS.
Any other words are blotted out by a man sitting down within the focus of the camera. His left arm is strapped to his chest in a makeshift splint, though he is using it to hold a mug of some hot beverage (yes hot, even in this heat) and he gives the camera a polite smile that does not quite reach his eyes.]
If I could have a moment of your time.
I was curious if anyone had any idea what we're doing anymore? The more we gain answers, albeit along with more questions, the more uncertain our path appears to become.
Is this because we find ourselves with choices? These 'Great Old Ones' or COMPASS? What to do about the tracks? Who has the most recipes for creamed corn? [The last is a bit sharp at the end.]
We are pawns on a chess board between two forces we do not fully understand and though we have fragments of information, there is no order that yet gives any of us a clear picture as to the intent of one side or the other. Do any of you truly believe that one is our salvation over the other? That the 'Great Old Ones' are going to deliver us from COMPASS or that COMPASS can truly continue to protect us from the threat beyond the campus borders?
Now more than ever we need each other. We need to take inventory of what we have, determine what we need, review what has been done in the past and plan for what we can do going forward.
So I ask you all, does anyone have any bloody idea how the hell we're going to survive this?
[ooc: The Resistance Filter is an IC filter developed to lock network messages away from COMPASS. The password for accessing the filters is hand-waved as being passed word of mouth so any PC in the game can have it and respond!]

We have to take risks, no matter how much or how little we know of the entire situation. If we don't take risks, we learn nothing, and we'll still be stuck in the middle and suffering just as we have been.
Where to go from here, though...
[Hange trails off, because she doesn't know. All of their options look incredibly bleak. It's a good thing she's used to that, so at least she won't be prone to panicking at the slightest hiccup.]
I think it's pretty clear we can only trust ourselves, in the end. No Great Old Ones, no COMPASS, just...us. Which is a huge risk. Which is the best we can do, in my opinion.
The question is, how do we reduce the risk? Do you believe we have what we need, within ourselves, to survive this, Hange?
[The way he asked the question indicated that Charles already knew his answer for himself but he was interested in hearing her thoughts.]
[She slips a hand in her hair as she sighs, then pulls it back out, loosening some of her hair from her ponytail in the process, but she doesn't seem to notice, or care.]
In short, it's a pain in the ass.
[As for Charles' second question, Hange's answer is not as forthcoming. She falls quiet, thinking of humanity and human nature that she's seen. And, sometimes, she's not all that confident in other people. Humans can be terrible and cruel and selfish. One just has to look at the government in her own world to understand how much sense it doesn't make and how it hurts their own people, the last of their people.
But on the other hand she's seen the goodness in humanity, how they can pull together in times of crisis and get the job done, regardless of...well, anything. She's seen the look in her own soldiers' eyes when all seems hopeless, but the first still burns in them, as if their very souls were a weapon to turn the tide. She's seen Eren.
When she speaks again, her voice is soft, sincere.]
...I do believe that. Maybe not at this very moment, but when the time comes, I'm sure we'll see how desperately we want to survive.

I'm not entirely certain that the cultists do not regard us with the same resentment that they harbor towards COMPASS.
I fear we are as targeted as COMPASS.

[ Someone is new to this filter business. She seems excited by the fact that it actually works, though. ]
I don't think COMPASS cares about protecting us, but I still think we should at least give the Old Ones a chance. Has anyone actually talked to them yet? I'm still trying.
I believe that efforts have been made to speak with the cultists and through them to the one they worship. You may wish to reach out to Commander Erwin Smith and ask him what success he had in his efforts.

Until then, I suppose we could try and figure out some way to maximize the damage each side does to the other, so when our time comes to face them they'll be weakened.

[It is a genuine question, as attempting to encourage such ideas was the purpose of Charles' communication in the first place.]
Neither side has appeared to interested in us as people but rather as pawns.

private to charles
We are waiting for the wall to fade as is. I would rather we not be forced into a move, that we should have a plan. I am unfortunately rather useless in most capacities unless you want him (or is it them?) listening in. If you can find a way for me to be of use, however, I would gladly take it.

However, I would like to believe that we can do more than merely 'wait'?

It seems for every cultist that is killed, ten more return. I doubt their hydra-like regeneration will stop once the barrier breaks. Should we focus on finding a way to keep the children and disabled safe while making fortifications for the fight?

[ Excuse Ivan if he sounds a little rough and angry. Between what they did to Sheena, to Barnaby, and more recently Kaede, Ivan doesn't have any hope in the cultists being a potential ally. ]

[His own tone sounds dry and perhaps a little resigned.]

[ "When" is a key word here. "If" has no place in that sentence. ]

[He's thinking most notably about Morgana.]
We have managed it in the past and with what we have recently learned, I see no reason not to have faith in our efforts to repeat that small victory.
