We don't really know what happened, Scott. Not for sure. [Just that you were gone, too, and now you're back and--don't mind the glimmer of hope in her eyes right now...though it does little to mask the exhaustion.]

But the campus is compromised and the cultists are on the move. I'd recommend getting out of the city and preparing for a fight; I've got weapons if you need one.

Cortana?

[ Thank God. He'd have expected to see Chief, first, but that's okay. If they're in trouble he's probably busy coordinating something. Either way, Scott's relief is as palpable as Cortana's, and he smiles at her. ]

I kind of got the not-going-inside thing, I just don't know what's up with that. But yeah, okay, I'll come wherever you are.

Is Chief with you? I should report in if there's trouble.

[There's a pause as she nods, sending him coordinates to where she is so he can get something...but then she stops. Report in, huh? He was gone before John...he doesn't need to know the gory details, then.]

Chief's...not here at the moment. He's been missing for over two weeks now. [Gone, buried, dead. In pieces. She swallows around a lump, trying to clear her throat. It doesn't quite work, but she presses on.] I've taken over his duties until he comes back. There's nothing to worry about.

[On that front, anyway. There's plenty of other things to be concerned about.]

Wait, what?

[ How is that nothing to worry about?

Campus is compromised, there's trouble with the Cultists, and Chief being gone is nothing to worry about? ]

Gone where, in the Void? I was there. I think.

[Of course it's nothing to worry about! He's been gone before and they've made it! This is no different!

Except it is and she's a little in over her head, hence the helpless shrug.]

Probably, considering his ID keeps bouncing messages back, but there's no way for us to bring him back either way. We just have to wait. [Besides, she almost says. You came back. A quick, tired smile flits across her face at his concern before she sighs.]

And don't worry about me. It's not the first time he's left, remember? We'll make it work until he comes back.

[ He asked for her. Because she and Chief, it's...

Well, actually Scott doesn't totally understand what they are. But he thinks of them as kind of like a platonic couple, which is weird, but it's how they act. So there's that. ]

Who's with you, Cortana? Allison, Stiles? Jackson?

I know.

[It's hard to put what they have into words. Partners works, but it's not...really fitting enough. Still, now's not the time to think about what they are. There's work to be done!]

There's no one with me right now, but last time I checked those three were still in the city. [somewhere. keeping a headcount's hard enough, forget locations. she misses IFFs.] They'll probably check in with you soon.

I haven't been able to find Allison, or Lydia. I think--Lydia's probably with Pan or something. [At least he hopes she is.] Jackson and Isaac are gone--completely out of here, back home.

I...God, I can't believe this happened so fast. Two weeks, that's all it's been.

I'm on my way to Cortana, Stiles, I'm gonna help her fight. Where are you, with Derek? [ He's assuming so, anyway. ]

Fight the monsters or whatever, but do not go after what the cultists are going for! Promise me!

[Stiles is adamant about that. Don't be the damn hero, Scott. Not this time.]

[ What the Cultists are…? ]

Wait, what are you talking about? What are the Cultists going for?

[ He’d found them by now, the girls, both of them. Everyone’s so separate, and it’s freaking Scott out. He has to bring them all together. ]

I'm here. The buildings are all trying to eat us, but I don't know what happened or why. Just...don't go inside, no matter what you do.

[ The buildings aren't receptive. Which, hey, that sucks, because all that he owned here was in his room on campus. ]

I'm glad you're okay. Are you with anyone right now?

You'd be surprised. They're more willing to let people in than out. [After a short pause, he adds,] It's not a good idea to try to get in, though, and anything you're looking for inside's probably been digested by now.

No one's with me at the moment, but I've been spending a lot of my time near the others down by the docks.

There’s people by the docks?

[ Scott’s currently heading in the other direction, to the forest. ]

Well, good. If you’re with a group you’re safer, Roddy. I’m heading up to meet Cortana. So many people are gone, and they need me. But if something goes wrong there, if you’re in trouble, call me okay?

[ he's alive. it's dark where lydia is, in the forest. when she'd lost jackson and peter, she'd made her way out of the city as the cultists started amassing. right now, nowhere feels safe. on the bright side, scott's a familiar face, and one she couldn't be more relieved to see. ]

It—It was decay. Just like the books about the Old Ones said. The buildings collapsed, and the cultists, they're making preparations for something. Scott, I think they're coming. [ she sounds panicked, and a noise in the brush causes her head to whip to the side, looking away from the watch. ] They don't go away during the day anymore.

[ Stiles had told him that Jackson was gone. That he hadn't heard from Allison and Lydia. Scott's relief at seeing her, alive, couldn't be greater.

He's on his way to the forest, planning to meet Cortana there. There's a defense to be mounted. Chief is gone, Jackson's gone. What else can he do? ]

Lydia, thank God. I'm so glad you're okay. Are you safe, is anything...? Is anyone with you?

No.

[ she dampens down a little panic at the fact, eyes wide even as she presses her lips together and shrugs her acceptance. ]

They were, but they’re gone. Something wrong, Scott. Something bad is coming, I can feel it. I keep—keep waking up feeling like something's slithering on me.

Like a snake?

[ Because it's a forest, and there could be snakes. It could be as simple as that.

Except that of course it's not, because when is it ever as simple as that here? ]

I want to tell you it's just a bad dream. Even I'm not that stupid.

I heard about Jackson.

No. Something bigger. [ she can’t describe it other than that, and the frustration in her face is apparent that she can’t better articulate or interpret it. she’d never learned, and that’s why it’s like this now. the losing time, the nightmares, the twitchiness. death is coming.

she reaches up with her free hand to rub at her shoulder, softening a bit at the mention of jackson. she’s not sure what to say. it’s not the first time she’d lost him. ducking her head, she tries to dismiss it. ] He’s back in London where he belongs. Jackson’s probably better off than any of us are right now. I don't think he's the one we need to worry about.

I'm not. I mean I'm glad, it's just.

He had my back, here. I know he did, and now? So many people are gone. But whatever's coming, I'm going to fight it. We've fought them before. Cultists, COMPASS. All of it. There's always a way to fight back.

[ And he will. So death is coming? Fine. That's fine, he died before. He came back from that, and he is not afraid. He'll keep fighting until there's no one left to fight for.

But there's always someone to fight for, really. ]
