So Acathla and I are due for cellphone upgrades. And while out with Mom all day we spent some of the time looking at different phones. We have ATT family plan already so we wanna stick with that. We started at ATT, but also looked at Costco, Radioshack and Best Buy 'Mobile' ( <- @the mall).
So A and I have basic phones not smartphones, currently. Since Mom is paying and the account holder with ATT, and I'm going with whatever she says because then I don't have to pay....
The first thing is should we stick with basic phones with a nice cheap plan we have, that lets us have umlimited calls, messaging, and internet (mobile net or whatever internet is on basic phones). OR should we get smartphones like the rest of the world (which the first anyone in our house had was Mom's that she just got in January). So I know nothing about Data plans or what uses Data like that. I know very little about Apps. All I know is I like reading fic on my phone and listening to music and taking pictures. None of which I could do before this green Pantech I got 2 years ago.
So here's where I need some help. I know what the people at the stores have to say about this list of phones but do any of you know anything. Do you have one? What do you think of them?
Basic phones:
Pantech Link II
Pantech Swift
LG Xpression
Smartphones:
HTC Vivid
Samsung DoubleTime
HTC Inspire
LG Thrill 4G
I think I oughta have one Basic and one smartphone picked out before they want to go get new ones either Friday or Saturday. Based off of what little I know about these I kinda like the Xpression and the Inspire.
Now the one I have now, that I really like, is a basic. It's a green Pantech (P9020 I think) that slides open to the keypad but it has a touch screen too. So I'm kinda leaning towards something similar if possible.
Okay off to watch "School Spirits" and browse the Radioshack website, cause they have awesome deals, and the guys that work there are awesome.
Thanks in advance if any of you can help!!! *HUGS*

Date: 2012-06-28 05:07 am (UTC)You want to read fic, listen to music, and take pictures. You also use Twitter, so you'll probably want an app for that. Again, this makes me lean more towards smartphone for you.
What you really, really need to know about cell phones? In most cases you really do get what you pay for, and I would recommend against a phone that is $1 or less every single time except on Black Friday.
Because fic and music are things that are important to you, you want to get a phone with a good Talk Time. The higher the talk time, the better the battery. Which means, the HTC Inspire, with it's talk time of three hours will drain your battery before lunch, so you don't want that.
The DoubleTime has a 3.2MP camera, which isn't horrible, but isn't really great, either. BUT. It has 260MB harddrive, basically. It can hold 1/4th of a gig on it. So you can have, like, 20 songs or so. So that's out.
The HTC Vivid has 7.6 hours of talk time, an 8MP camera (and a front facing camera) and a 16GB harddrive. It can do 4G as well, but the first thing you'll want to do is download an app so you can toggle that on and off, because it will drain the FUCK out of your battery and isn't really a huge deal, for the most part. Also, HTC phones have a kickstand, which it just fucking neat. *Hugs her Thunderbolt*
I TALK A LOT, I'M SORRY. Feel free to ask me specifics. Like Kat said on Twitter, I sold cell phones for a living, so I can decipher all the confusing things about them.

Date: 2012-06-28 05:48 am (UTC)By whatever Mom decides on, as to getting basics again or getting smartphones, is what I gotta live with because I can't afford a phone unless it's part of the family plan on her account. I guarentee she won't want to spend much and SHE WILL lean towards those $1 ones or free after rebate types. However my pretty green Pantech was bought under similar conditions and I like it.
The most I talk on the phone is when Bryn is available and occasionally with 2 other friends. Bryn calls literally hold the record on call duration. My family the people I talk on the phone most often to, like average 4-5 minutes. By that long in the call they're annoyed. As for internet it's like literally twitter and Fanfiction.net (or similar fic sites). Occasionally checking scores or weather or looking something up. Alot of the time my phone can go days without getting a call. Music... I loooooove that I can put music on my phone and listen to any number of things when I get call in to clean at the school. Acathla (sis) and mom both take tons of picture with their digital cameras so my cell camera pics tend to be of things at store I might want, or other things if they aren't there. But the picture quality isn't swell.
Acathla was leaning towards the DoubleTime so I'll warn her about that, but I don't know if she'll listen. The Inspire has crappy talk time? Hmmmm. The plastic things attach to the Inspire and the LG Thrill with all the numbers and info on em... When I looked at those info stat things the Inspire looked better.
And sadly the Vivid that sounds food from what you're telling me is one that we saw at the ATT store and any smartphone there was way more than Mom would spend for me and I don't recall seeing it anywhere else today. Toggle? I assume by what you said I could switch the 4G function on & off? Also kickstands? As in what holds up my bicycle?
Specifics... I'm sure I have some but it's been a long day. I may have some when the 3 of us start looking online and trying to make final decisions. But I finally add you on twitter. Don't know how you weren't there before. Most of you from that one day Bryn brought me up to hangout at Wincon in Chicago have made their way onto my twitter.
I'm glad someone I know knows about cellphones. I know crap all about technology today. Okay going to look at that radioshack page now. Anything specific ATT phonewise I should look for?
Don't worry about the babble!!! I'm an old pro at Willow!babble as you can see.

Date: 2012-06-28 06:15 am (UTC)The Vivid (in my area, at least) is $49.99 and even though that sounds like a lot it is really good for a cell phone, especially that kind. I would beg Mom, or try to work out some kind of trade with her to try and get that. Because if you get the free phones, my experience both in owning them and working at a cell phone company tells me that you will have so many problems you might not be able to last the full two years on it, and might have to spend significantly more to replace it mid-contract.
And you can trust me on that, because I make no money no matter what you buy, so my only interest is making sure you get something good for you.
Apps are one of the best things EVER. The app I'm speaking of makes a little button you can press and when you do it will turn your 4G on or off, instead of you having to find your way into the settings to do it.
And, yes, a kickstand just like a bike. This is actually my model HTC with the kickstand out (but not my phone specifically, of course). (http://phandroid.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/htc-thunderbolt-sexy-kickstand.jpg) It's neat because you can stand your phone up next to you on your desk or turn it on it's side, like that, and read or play a game easier with it sitting on something at an angle.

Date: 2012-06-28 06:06 am (UTC)as for what my phone is, it's a Samsung (Verizon) and I think it's the Gusto or something like that. I got it about 9 months ago and it doesn't have it's model name or number on it. sorry, but it was the only non smart flip phone they had I think.
