Challenge #4

Today's challenge is all about favorite ships! Most of these are Sense8 of course, and I could probably include the cluster itself as one big happy found family but I broke it up and did some specifics.

1) Rajan/Kala/Wolfgang from Sense8. This is my OT3 and I cannot get enough of them. Love triangle? No thanks, give us a triangle in love instead. It's messy but somehow just WORKS, and honestly, it cemented all three of them as fave characters once they got together more than they ever were separately.

2) Wolfgang & Felix from Sense8. My idiot German babiesssssss. They love each other so much. Best Friends FOREVER. I love a loyal bestie, and basically include Felix with all my OT3 fics since he is absolutely part of Wolfgang's life and Wolfgang's relationships. And this gives me a good excuse to use this amazing gif [personal profile] maevedarcy made for me of my German/Indian quartet clasping hands.

Rajan, Kala, Wolfgang and Felix from sense8 holding hands

3) Sun/Mun from Sense8. They're named Sun and Moon for heaven's sake, how cute is that? And he loves being kicked in the head by her. What a man.

4) Lito & Wolfgang from Sense8. Before Lito shows up, Wolfgang has had very little interaction with other members of the cluster (apart from Kala obviously, and the orgy). He's about to get himself shot in the face because his pride won't let him lie to save his own stupid life, and Lito shows up and basically gets his permission to intervene and lkjasdfkljadslkjfadsflk;. Then Wolfgang shows up to help Lito win a fight he was very much losing, and later slides in like an angry German fair godmother to protect him again. Lito sees himself as nothing more than a liar, and Wolfgang sees himself as nothing more than a fighter, and that's exactly what they need from each other. GAH it makes me crazy.

5) Lito/Hernando/Dani from Sense8. I love that this relationship went from the beard that wouldn't leave to a family unit that supported each other through everything. A beautiful example of what family can actually mean.

6) Will/Hannibal from Hannibal (NBC). The original Murder Husbands and my first truly toxic ship. It's so good y'all.

7) Eve/Villanelle from Killing Eve. The yuri version of Hannigram with a soundtrack that doesn't sound like dropping a silverware drawer down a flight of stairs.

8) Claudia/Madeleine from Interview with the Vampire. There are so many ships in this series but they're all so bad for each other it was hard to decide, so I went with the one where they're actually great for each other and don't cause nonstop destruction to everyone and everything around them by being in love. Changing the dynamic from mother & daughter in the book to not yet romantic lovers in the series was yet another stroke of genius on the part of the showrunners.

9) The crew of the Revenge from Our Flag Means Death. This show was so much fun. Every couple/throuple/fwb/whatever they had is worth shipping.

10) I'm going to embarrass myself thoroughly with this last one, but I think it says a lot about me that this was the first het ship ship so that's why I'm including it. Full disclaimer, I have not seen this movie since I was a literal child and do not remember much about it, but I'm going off the vibes that appealed to me and still do. April O'Neil/Casey Jones from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the original 1990 movie. I know. I know. I'm stunned to even be typing that. But here's the thing: Intelligent independent woman/sarcastic badass guy who is actually a wimp IS MY JAM. It's why I loved Buffy/Pike in the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. It's why I love Lenny/Mace in Strange Days. Make her tough, make him pathetic. I will eat that shit up.

This was so much fun to do post Snowflake Challenge and somehow February is already OVER??? Thank you to [personal profile] dreamersdare for putting on this event and giving me something to squee about each week.

[personal profile] candyheartsex has revealed authors!! Another delightful round. Because the minimum requirements are so small (300 words for fic) and there are usually several hundreds participants, I decide to go mega self-indulgent and ask only for my rare polyships, in tiny (K-9) and larger (Wind Breaker) fandoms. And therefore I was SUPER DELIGHTED to get, guess what?? A gift for one of my beloved rare polyships :D :D :D :D 💖💖💖 *happy sigh* A delight, truly.

Meanwhile I wrote two things :D :D One for a beloved BNHA polyship, and the other for K-9... I was so glad to have an outlet for some of my feelings over the fact that OBORO CANONICALLY GETS A COLLAR lol. This is probably the FIRST EVER K-9 fanwork in an exchange, too? >:D Mwahahaha

hardly an abduction | Boku no Hero Academia | Miruko/Dabi/Hawks | ~800 words | rated T
Summary: Dabi is injured. Miruko and Hawks take a risk to help, hiding in an abandoned shelter in the mountains.

Finding old fic snippets

Feb. 20th, 2026 07:54 am
vriddy: Dabi with feather against throat (dabi with feather)
[personal profile] vriddy
I remembered an old fic snippet from yonks ago, a terrible BNHA fic called Plucking that I apparently already mentioned over 2 years ago hah. This used to be a stress relief fic in which Hawks endures a no good very bad time anytime I was having a rough time. In 2023 I was apparently staging a rescue for him since I felt better, but looking at the end it looks like that might have been an hallucination, whoops. I wrote "Post anon?" in the notes because I guess it is extremely heavy on whump and angst but heh.

Anyway, it didn't seem like it had been migrated when I moved to Scrivener so I went back hunting into my 4tw files. And wow I found some other stuff that also missed the migration. Mostly written 2022-2023 if I believe my tracking spreadsheet haha. See, when I started writing I had a directory per fandom which made sense in theory, except that then I wrote like 200 fics for BNHA including several multi-chapters, and 2-10 fics for other fandoms. Things got better organised in 2024, apparently (or more like I gave up and created a new directory called BNHA (2024)), and I was good at migrating existing WIPs into BNHA (2025) when the year changed but some stuff got lost in the pre-2024 reshuffle. Several seem like 60-90% finished :0

I checked other fandoms too and found maybe one or two mostly developed concepts for Mairimashita Iruma-kun which I haven't written for since 2021 and it's making me a bit nostalgic... I think I never ended up writing up a post about it, but this was a fandom I tried the "Save The Cat" outlining method for and it utterly broke my brain and the story. Beat sheets don't work well with how I think, it seems. BUT this also reminds me I should have handwritten notes for that full outline and I wonder if I could try to revive that story, too... Like it was a fake dating OT3 and I don't know how I tried to make fake dating work for 3 people!! Maybe I can salvage the heart of it and do something with it? I haven't watched the canon in years either, apparently I stopped watching the anime in the middle of season 2... but that also kinda makes me want to catch up!! Especially since the official Mafia AU also made me nostalgic for the original characters recently. Although I seem to have paused my manga reading for that as well. I think it might be common for me to kind of drift off with "episodic"-style series, but hey maybe that means it shouldn't be too hard to pick back up either.

Anyway I find myself with more ongoing WIPs than I expected!! I think it'd be cool to slap an ending on the ones that have a good chunk written already. There's a couple that are so nearly there for BNHA that I had to check if I didn't somehow post them without remembering, despite the unfinished sentences and couple of bits with brackets lol. [ first kiss description here ].

Back on the Wagon

Feb. 19th, 2026 10:06 pm
winterfirelight: (Garden)
[personal profile] winterfirelight
Well... I guess I kind of fell off the posting wagon again at the end of January. I enjoyed the Snowflake Challenges that I got to, but ultimately life took over and I just haven't had the time. I've been making a concerted effort in February to cut back on some of the things I do so I can feel like I have any amount of breathing room again, with varying success.

Enough success I had a bit of time to do some herb stuff again! So that's nice. It's garden planning season, and I got a number of new exciting things at a seed swap, so one of these days I need to sit down and plot out what's actually getting planted this year. I'm hopeful that some of the things I planted last year have overwintered successfully, but I won't know until it's warmer. I think the valerian will be fine, but the elecampane I'm worried about. It never seemed to like where I put it, so if it's survived, I may try to transplant it elsewhere to see if I can find what it prefers. The angelica is still there and arguably doing better than it did all last year - maybe it's just needed time to settle in. We'll see!

A neighbor gave me some hops that I put in the ground a month or two ago, and I'm just starting to see it come up through the mulch. It's got a small little trellis for now, but if it does well, maybe next year we'll put in something bigger and prettier there. I'd love to get some passionflower somewhere too, and that's a climber as well.

I'm thinking of replacing the old garden bed by the street with a few taller corrugated steels beds. The old one has been there since before we moved in and is slowly rotting away, and being practically at sidewalk-level where dogs pee all the time, I don't love the idea of harvesting from it as-is. It'll never be the best place to grow edibles, but I think if we elevated it by a couple of feet and had steel instead of wood, that would make it more reasonable. With a few pots instead of one big bed,  we could grow some of the things that like to take over without risking the rest of the garden. Oregano, lemon balm, maybe motherwort? Feverfew loves it over there, so I should probably reserve it some room, though it tends to wander and may not cooperate well with being given a designated spot.

I keep thinking about what else I can make with the harvest I still have left from years prior. Herbs only stay good for so long, and the poor calendula in the jar is more yellow than orange at this point, so I fear it's past its prime already. Alas. This coming season I'll make oils and tinctures from it early in the season, and then save the later harvests for tea so the dried flowers last longer into the winter. Live and learn. I did finally get around to making some fresh vinegar shrub with the elderberry I got at the farmer's market last fall and froze. I'm really hoping to get some elderberry plants of my own one of these years, but I'm still debating on the best place to put it. They can get sizeable, I understand. We got the backyard clear of brambles last year, but it's still not really set up for gardening beyond that.

In non-garden news, Discord is going the way of age verification, which means I will no longer be there. Which honestly really sucks. My most active online communities have been there, and folks seem to be struggling to figure out where to go. An herbalism server I'm in has been going round and round on different options, and though I've floated Dreamwidth a number of times when folks have expressed a desire for old-school blogging formats like LiveJournal, I don't seem to have gotten any bites on it. Baffling. It's exactly what people are saying they want, but tell them that it actually exists and they really, truly could have the platform of their dreams, and it's crickets. Oh well.

...incidentally, is anyone interested in an herbalism community here on Dreamwidth? Maybe it's an "if you build it, they will come" situation. I'm far from the most qualified person to run something like that, but seeing as I'm about to have a significant amount of my regular internet time freed up without Discord, maybe I could manage to sustain it even with my history as a chronic lurker.

Astute readers with excellent memory (or better than mine anyway XD) may remember when I lost my shit over Wind Breaker's volume 22 back in June. I basically immediately started writing this fic afterwards, which is just That Scene written from different point of views and every character individually losing it, just like I did... Lol. I'm a bit sick of trying to find an ending that is The Best Possible Ever so now that I have one that's probably good enough, let's go with it. Especially since that polyship doesn't have a ton of fic for it either, so it's nice to add one more either way.

On the plus side of going back to this story then dropping it again, the first chapters are decently edited already 😆

[personal profile] kingstoken's 2026 Book Bingo: Set at a School/University

The Whole Truth by Kit Pearson and its sequel And Nothing but the Truth are a pair of middle grade historical novels set in British Columbia in the 1930s.

The main character is Polly Brown, who begins the story age ten, relocating from Winnipeg to the Gulf Islands to live with her grandmother following the death of her father—an event that's the subject of secrecy between her and her older sister Maud. Shortly after arriving at their grandmother's, Maud leaves for boarding school, leaving Polly to adjust alone to her new life on a small island and deal with the carrying the secret by herself. The second book picks up a couple of years later, when Polly also needs to leave the island for secondary schooling and struggles to adjust to being away while more big changes come to her family.

I read a few of Kit Pearson's books as a kid, and when she came up in conversation recently with a friend, I decided to check out some of her more recent novels. I don't know how her older books would hold up to a re-read for me, but I ended up having a mixed reaction to these two.

They were largely pleasant reads. They're well-written, and if spending time in upper middle-class circles in 1930s western Canada appeals, there are a lot of detailed descriptions of clothes, food, and rural seaside life to enjoy. As someone with an interest in that part of the world but who doesn't have family history there, I appreciated this look into the period.

These books feel like they're in the tradition of Anne of Green Gables, Pollyanna, A Little Princess, Heidi, etc.—stories I associate with girls changing the world around them, whether through action or because of their positivity. But that's not really the deal with Polly, who's a very passive character and doesn't seem to bring anything unexpected to her new community. It's also not a Secret Garden or Goodnight, Mr. Tom situation where it felt like Polly herself was changed by her new home, aside from benefiting from more money and opportunities. Things just kind of work out for her while the least dramatic version of eventful situations unfold around her.

I think what particularly didn't land for me was this sense of complacency with regard to the arc of the moral universe. Polly is shown recognizing injustice and then just...never does anything about it. Her grandmother racially discriminates against a neighbour, and Polly disagrees but then lets it lie. We don't see her ever interacting with the neighbour, or even with the neighbour's son, who's a schoolmate. She has the instinct to give money to a homeless man, but then stops when her teacher scolds her and doesn't help anyone again. She never takes a stand or makes any sacrifice, aside from the one time when it's strongly self-serving, but other characters praise her for seeing the world clearly with her artist's eye, in a way that implies that just seeing is enough and that things will work themselves out over time (at least for those who happen to be the loved one of someone with money and property).

While I was reading, I often found myself thinking how glad I was that the author was avoiding the most predictable conflicts I kept thinking were coming, but by the end of the second book, I looked back and felt like something critical was missing. I don't need big culminating moments in historical coming-of-age novels—I absolutely love A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and could write a whole essay on how it shares a sliver of the same flaw but how all of its positives outweigh that for me—but I needed just a little something more to care about these characters and their fortunes.

In a shocking turn of events, I am once again writing missing scene fics for Amor Vincit Omnia ;) There are spoilers below so look away now if you haven't seen the finale.

One of the things I love so much about the wrap up movie is that it gives all the characters a chance to shine, and that's where this fic comes in. Whispers sure talks a lot of shit for a guy chained in a cellar, but Amanita and (especially) Dani get him to shut his damn mouth. The thing I was really interested in was how everyone else would react to that scene since it cuts straight to Riley talking about Bodhi. Fortunately [personal profile] maevedarcy had a request for some Amanita & Dani bonding back during the Sense8 Holiday Exchange, and although I didn't get it done in time for that, I did keep working through what that might look like. Without further ado:

The past few weeks haven't had much going on so I haven't really had anything to journal about.

I watched Sleepwalkers and Blair Witch Project yesterday. I rewatch Sleepwalkers every couple years and Clovis the cat continues to be the best character. There's so much in that movie that's just never explained.

It was technically my second time watching Blair Witch and I definitely found it scarier the first time over a decade ago.

I did get my first cellphone a couple weeks ago. It's definitely been an adjustment from a computer. (Why are there two different things for volume?)

I got a couple things of Hi-Chew candies and found out that I like dragon fruit.

Voting for next month's book over at [community profile] bookclub_dw is currently ongoing.

Does anyone have recs for image hosting sites that aren't imgur? I'm planning on changing my Dreamwidth theme, but I need a place to host images for it. (I'm trying to avoid filegarden because there's still no TOS.)
