[personal profile] candyheartsex has revealed authors!! Another delightful round. Because the minimum requirements are so small (300 words for fic) and there are usually several hundreds participants, I decide to go mega self-indulgent and ask only for my rare polyships, in tiny (K-9) and larger (Wind Breaker) fandoms. And therefore I was SUPER DELIGHTED to get, guess what?? A gift for one of my beloved rare polyships :D :D :D :D 💖💖💖 *happy sigh* A delight, truly.

pile of five by [archiveofourown.org profile] yesthisisnarumi | Wind Breaker | Sakura/Nirei/Suou/Kiryuu/Tsugeura | ~700 words | rated T

Summary: Akihiko wakes up in the middle of their bed and tries his best to find a way out.

Read it on AO3

Meanwhile I wrote two things :D :D One for a beloved BNHA polyship, and the other for K-9... I was so glad to have an outlet for some of my feelings over the fact that OBORO CANONICALLY GETS A COLLAR lol. This is probably the FIRST EVER K-9 fanwork in an exchange, too? >:D Mwahahaha

hardly an abduction | Boku no Hero Academia | Miruko/Dabi/Hawks | ~800 words | rated T
Summary: Dabi is injured. Miruko and Hawks take a risk to help, hiding in an abandoned shelter in the mountains.
Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

tailor-made | K-9 | Ren/Oboro/Fujimaru/Kagari | ~400 words | rated M
Summary: Oboro pretends not to make a big deal out of it when Hidaka hands him a collar.
But it is.
Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

Recent Reading: Our Share of Night

If Mexican Gothic left you craving more South American fantasy horror, Our Share of Night by Mariana Enriquez of Argentina (translated from Spanish by Megan McDowell) has you covered. This is a family epic intertwined with the dark machinations of a macabre cult and its impact. It's also a splendid allegory for the evils of colonialism and generational trauma. This book was #15 from the "Women in Translation" rec list.

The book begins with Juan, a powerful but ill man who acts as a "medium" for the cult to commune with its dark god. Juan, struggling with the health of his defective heart, the wear-and-tear of years as the medium, and the grief and rage of his wife's recent death (he suspects, at the orders of the cult he serves) is desperate to keep his son Gaspar from stepping into his shoes, as the cult wants. Juan's opening segment of the book is about his efforts to protect Gaspar.

From there, the book branches off into other perspectives which give background to both the cult and the family. This is a great way of giving us a holistic and generational view of the cult, but it does drag occasionally. Gaspar's sections--in his childhood and then later in his teens/young adulthood--together make up the majority of the book, and while enjoyable, do amble off into great detail about his and his friends' day-to-day lives, such that I did wonder sometimes when we were getting back to the plot. I don't like to cite pacing issues, because I think that gets thrown around a lot whenever someone didn't vibe with a book, but the drawn-out length of these quotidian sections doesn't fit well with how quickly the climax of the book passes and is wrapped up. I would have liked to have spent less time with Gaspar at soccer games and more on his plans for addressing the cult.

However, on the whole, the book is a fun, if very dark read. It also serves well as a critique of Argentina's moneyed class and of colonialism in general, and how money sticks with money even across borders. Here, Argentina's wealthy have more in common with English money than with the Argentine lower classes (and that's how they want it). The cult, populated at its upper echelons by the privileged, is an almost literal blight on the land, willing to sacrifice an endless amount of blood, local and otherwise, to beg power off a hungry and unknown supernatural entity.

It brutalizes its mediums, which it often plucks from poverty to wring for power and then discard. Juan was adopted away from his own poor family at six, under the insistence his parents would not be able to pay for the medical care he needed, and he is the least-abused of the cult's line of mediums. As soon as the cult sets their eye on his son, Juan must begin scheming how to keep Gaspar away from them.

Although he acts out of love of his son, Juan is also a deeply flawed person. He is secretive, moody, lies constantly (there is actual gaslighting here) and doesn't hesitate to knock Gaspar around to make him obey. The more he deteriorates--a common problem with all cult mediums--the less human he becomes. Part of this is his work, but much of it is also attributable to years of being used by the cult for its ends and the accumulated emotional trauma. This, of course, is then inflicted on Gaspar through his father's tempers and secrets.

Similarly flawed are the other members of the immediate family. Juan's wife Rosario, despite a better nature than her parents, still supports this cult and is eager for Gaspar to follow in his father's footsteps as a cult medium, in part for the prestige it will bring her as his mother. Gaspar, although far more empathetic and gentle than either of his parents, eventually grows up with his father's temper. Watching him grow from a sweet-natured little boy into the troubled young adult he becomes after years of his father's abuse and neglect is painful, but realistic.

The book is also unexpectedly queer. It's not often a book surprises me with its queerness, because that's usually what landed it on my radar in the first place, but this one did. Juan and Rosario are both bisexual and later in the book we spend some active time in Argentina's queer scene, including during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s.

An ambitious novel that for the most part, pulls off what it's trying to do. As mentioned, I wish the ending had gotten more room to breathe, and I would not have minded this coming at the cost of some of the middle bits of navel-gazing, but I still felt the story was satisfying.

Finding old fic snippets

I remembered an old fic snippet from yonks ago, a terrible BNHA fic called Plucking that I apparently already mentioned over 2 years ago hah. This used to be a stress relief fic in which Hawks endures a no good very bad time anytime I was having a rough time. In 2023 I was apparently staging a rescue for him since I felt better, but looking at the end it looks like that might have been an hallucination, whoops. I wrote "Post anon?" in the notes because I guess it is extremely heavy on whump and angst but heh.

Anyway, it didn't seem like it had been migrated when I moved to Scrivener so I went back hunting into my 4tw files. And wow I found some other stuff that also missed the migration. Mostly written 2022-2023 if I believe my tracking spreadsheet haha. See, when I started writing I had a directory per fandom which made sense in theory, except that then I wrote like 200 fics for BNHA including several multi-chapters, and 2-10 fics for other fandoms. Things got better organised in 2024, apparently (or more like I gave up and created a new directory called BNHA (2024)), and I was good at migrating existing WIPs into BNHA (2025) when the year changed but some stuff got lost in the pre-2024 reshuffle. Several seem like 60-90% finished :0

I checked other fandoms too and found maybe one or two mostly developed concepts for Mairimashita Iruma-kun which I haven't written for since 2021 and it's making me a bit nostalgic... I think I never ended up writing up a post about it, but this was a fandom I tried the "Save The Cat" outlining method for and it utterly broke my brain and the story. Beat sheets don't work well with how I think, it seems. BUT this also reminds me I should have handwritten notes for that full outline and I wonder if I could try to revive that story, too... Like it was a fake dating OT3 and I don't know how I tried to make fake dating work for 3 people!! Maybe I can salvage the heart of it and do something with it? I haven't watched the canon in years either, apparently I stopped watching the anime in the middle of season 2... but that also kinda makes me want to catch up!! Especially since the official Mafia AU also made me nostalgic for the original characters recently. Although I seem to have paused my manga reading for that as well. I think it might be common for me to kind of drift off with "episodic"-style series, but hey maybe that means it shouldn't be too hard to pick back up either.

Anyway I find myself with more ongoing WIPs than I expected!! I think it'd be cool to slap an ending on the ones that have a good chunk written already. There's a couple that are so nearly there for BNHA that I had to check if I didn't somehow post them without remembering, despite the unfinished sentences and couple of bits with brackets lol. [ first kiss description here ].

I've been drawing for over 20 years, and the best I still can come with are scribbles that barely resemble a human shape.

I got no reason to bother at my age anymore.

I quit drawing

I made the sound decision to give up drawing and just forgetting about it. I had thought that as long as I liked and enjoyed what I created it would've been enough without trying pleasing anyone else. But life isn't that easy, and I just kept lying to myself. I still have a deviantart account, but nothing drawn will ever be uploaded there or anywhere else. I am thinking on writing stories, and at least just use anything to polish them. It's easier than having to worry about how a body should be structured.

I've tried doing this for over 20 years and I never was able to grow at all. So telling me to continue practicing its not going to cut it.

I'm tired. I got nothing else to say about it.

Does this exist?

That's what we call it during days like this. Right now as I type this, it is 17°C and sunny outside. But also, tomorrow it will be 11°C, overmorrow it will be 6°C, and then it hits freezing soon after accompanied by snow and thunderstorms.

Still, I went on a walk along the river during lunch. Unfortunately, I didn't bring my coat and didn't account for the difference in temperature in the shade, but it was still nice.

Almost five! I can still remember when she was so small I would carry her in the crook of my arm while I was walking around the condo. Every parent says that, because it's true.

Laila is expressing more preferences and wants while also being more independent. On mornings when I get up and let [instagram.com profile] sashagee sleep in, I go out with Laila and give her medicine, and I no longer just make her food and give her what she gets. I now ask her what she wants to eat for breakfast. And sure, the answer is always the same thing: "pickle AND cheese!", by which she means some pickles, a bit of cheese, some fruit (usually blueberries or strawberries), and toast with butter or jam. It's what she always wants, even when she wants something else--a couple times she's said e.g. waffles or eggs, and when I asked her, "You want eggs?" she'll respond with "Just pickles and cheese." Well, I can't blame her, since I have basically the same thing for breakfast every day too.

She's also getting more self-conscious. There's been a few times when she's tripped and fallen while running around the condo and she got so embarrassed that she immediately ran to her room and shut the door afterwards. Emoji Kirby hands in front of face It's not like we laugh at her or anything! We just ask her if she's okay, but she's grown-up enough to be embarrassed about it. And a few days ago, she had a coughing fit, looked up at me when she recovered, and said, "It's very frustrating!"

You're right, Laila, it is.

She's settled on her new interests and moved on from her old interests. A year ago, she was very into the Cars franchise and loved Lightning McQueen, but she hasn't wanted to watch Cars in months. A few months ago it was all Bluey all the time. Nowadays it's Hello Kitty and Friends whenever we give her the choice of what she wants to watch. She'll spend almost every free moment drawing and painting with the water markers and books we've gotten her, and painting with watercolors if we let her. The other thing she loves to do lately is have us read books to her, which has always been something she likes but it's more of an interest lately. She'll grab books herself and bring them over--her favorites lately are Sammy Spider's First Yom Kippur, Little Owl's Night, Challah for Shabbat Tonight, and You Are My Happy. I got her Sammy Spider's First Shabbat but she hasn't taken to it yet.

Unfortunately, tragedy has struck. When Laila was younger she had a habit of pulling her hair, but we had mostly managed to deter the behavior...until she spent a week in the hospital, which caused her enough anxiety that it started up again. [instagram.com profile] sashagee saw how thin her hair was getting on one side and was worried she'd do permanent damage to her hair by pulling out too much of it, and so to deter further hair pulling, we gave her a haircut. A significant one:

2026-02-14 - Laila haircut

Laila...doesn't like it. It has, however, helped stop her from pulling her hair--she'll reach for where she usually pulls and it's not there--as have my comments that if she keep pulling it we'll have to cut it even shorter. They're probably going to have to cut some of it for her upcoming surgery anyway, so it's not purely a deterrent measure. And we know that if she did give herself bald spots she'd be really upset about them when she got older, but seeing her look in the mirror and silent tears roll down her cheeks is really upsetting. Emoji comfort

In happier news, she's fully become a fashionista. She no longer waits for us to pick out her clothes in the morning--if we wait too long, she'll go rummage through her drawers until she finds something she likes and change into it, all by herself! The only hurdles are that if she's wearing shorts as part of her pajama set she'll sometimes leave them on under her pants and, the bigger one, if we let her she would wear a half-dozen outfits throughout the day. She'll forget to roll up her sleeves when washing her hands, get the sleeves wet, and then go back to her room to change into a new shirt because she can't stand having wet sleeves. If we didn't stop her, she'd change her clothes a half-dozen times a day and [instagram.com profile] sashagee would have to go laundry basically every single day.

I also make her carry her own food plate to the table. She may have issues focusing on things sometimes, but when it's her food, she can keep her mind on it. Though she does carry it at a very dangerous angle sometimes.

What other ways will she grow and change?

[personal profile] vriddy
Astute readers with excellent memory (or better than mine anyway XD) may remember when I lost my shit over Wind Breaker's volume 22 back in June. I basically immediately started writing this fic afterwards, which is just That Scene written from different point of views and every character individually losing it, just like I did... Lol. I'm a bit sick of trying to find an ending that is The Best Possible Ever so now that I have one that's probably good enough, let's go with it. Especially since that polyship doesn't have a ton of fic for it either, so it's nice to add one more either way.

On the plus side of going back to this story then dropping it again, the first chapters are decently edited already 😆

Happy birthday Amelia!

[personal profile] dorchadas
I haven't mentioned her at all before because she's one of Laila's classmates, and on Friday night we got invited to her birthday party.

We've been to birthday parties before but this was second time we've been to a birthday party for someone in Laila's class and the first time it was at their house (the first one we went to was at a zoo). Because of that they had all the standard party games for young kids--they painted pictures, they played pin the tail on the donkey, hit a piñata, danced to songs from K-Pop Demon Hunters!, the works. They ate pizza and cake while the adults ate fajitas and drank margaritas. It's the story about kids' birthday parties that we didn't realize was happening while we were young but heard about after we grew up.

Laila...was a bit of a handful. She didn't really play with the other kids very much, and she kept running around and grabbing balloons, so we couldn't just trust her to hang out with the other kids. One of us always had to follower her around and keep track of her to make sure everything was going okay. It was a smaller house with a bunch of kids, though, so some chaos was expected. Near the end she started getting even more wild, but she had been up since almost 6 a.m. and it was past her bedtime, so it was definitely time for her to go home.

[instagram.com profile] sashagee talked to Amelia's mom at the party a bit and maybe we'll get a playdate set up! The parents were mentioning how they were a bit disappointed that it seemed like no one had set up any playdates. I talked to a couple of the other dads in the kitchen--one of the parents is French, so we chatted about being in a country where you don't speak the language at all (him when he came here, me in Japan) until I had to run away because Laila was on a rampage again.

Also, [instagram.com profile] sashagee did get some vindication, though! One of the other parents mentioned that they also were offered the option of half-day preschool for their four-year-old, so it's not just us. The school officials acted like this was a mistake that we had made and everything was all our fault, but nope! They screwed up their intake forms. Well, at least now we know.

Z and I had a nice visit with my parents. He wasn't feeling great for a lot of it, unfortunately, but I wasn't exactly objecting to sitting around and watching hours of figure skating with everyone, or putting up some long Youtube videos. Since I am the one with the mystical knowledge of how to VPN into Canada, I also streamed other random events for my dad and Z, which was more fun than I initially expected. The one event where the skiiers look like they're jogging uphill much of the time seemed incredibly exhausting. Humans enjoy doing such weird things, haha.

(CBC has their own commentators this year instead of Belinda & Olly. They are better than Tara and Johnny - not to damn with faint praise - but they are also behind on rules that were changed in 2018 and think it's beautiful and romantic that someone with severe injury issues was basically told he had to come back to try to win a medal. I do find it amusing how much they kept hammering Berulava on his shitty lifting technique.)

The figure skating has sure been up and down with some surprises. I was so happy for Ellie and Danny in the pairs team event - landing those throw jumps! - and while they weren't quite as on fire today, the pairs free as a whole was great. Delighted for M/K, especially given how distraught Ryuichi seemed after the mess-up in the short! Now to emotionally prepare myself for the women....

Otherwise, we've been doing a few boring things around the house (had to chlorine shock our water, that was a process) and had a quiet Valentine's day with each other. I also bought the game Dead Letter Department and had to return it a couple hours later because it gave me a migraine, which is a first, even after turning off the annoying flickering in the accessibility menu. I think it was a combination of the effects + the core gameplay loop being to read a bunch of text that is often tiny and/or hard to read. Thankfully Steam let me have a refund even though I was slightly over the two-hour limit. To be honest, I was unimpressed with the ending I got anyway, which was basically a 'you lose' screen after struggling to read something that was intentionally made unreadable, so I don't think I would have played more even if it didn't turn out to physically pain me to do so.
no_apologies: (Fritz! (one of my fave pics of him))
[personal profile] no_apologies
This next one is going to have Noaki, Fritz, and my self-insert persona, performing and singing together! Picking up from where Demon Turkey left... Naoki in irritation and mid-rage and my own character being there to do my best to calm him down, while doing my best to try to explain who that talking turkey is.

And then during the middle of this conversation, Fritz arrives somewhere in the middle of this song!

(Mood: Naoki would be feeling cautiously optimistic and guarded. Fox is trying to be calming while not wanting to have to explain too much to him in one sitting, and Fritz comes to find them as the concerned friend. Genre: Melodic Emo Alternative and Industrial Ambient blend)

Lyrics )

https://suno.com/s/1Eb6bfJFcRgGwGzp Suno put in a phone call FX in the beginning as I was putting together this song, wow! This really makes up for not having any credits to put in every spoken dialogue I've written at first.
