They'd been friends. Hadn't they? Closer than, Gwen corrects, indignant—before reminding herself to forget once again.
Gwen remembers Morgana—her smile, her bravery, the affection she spoke into Gwen's name—and can't reconcile any of it with the woman she knows now.
Cruel. Anger blazing, burning her up inside. Hatred twisting her eyes, her smile—the features Gwen once held so gently in her hands.
That hatred in her heart did not spare Gwen.
The things Morgana has done, horrendous things—Gwen can not deny the simmering in her gut that says she feels the same.
And yet—she thinks of her, pokes and prods at the edge of a scab still forming, wondering why.
Because if she had known Morgana, had loved her, wouldn't she understand. (Couldn't I have stopped her, she thinks—before forcing herself to forget she had.)
And if Morgana had truly cared for, loved, Gwen—shouldn't that have been enough? Couldn't Gwen have helped relieve Morgana's burdens if, at any point, Morgana had only trusted her enough?
Gwen sighs—resolves to recover this wound. (
The hush of the swept-away thoughts fills the room, as she sits down to her table set for one, her home swelling with silence.
) At least until tomorrow.
