Tsuruhara and Ichinose turn to look at her.
Rinne shifts uncomfortably—tries to think of a logical reason for her suggestion, to think of anything besides Renge, twirling her rose and completely oblivious in her lovestruck state.
“You’re right, Kudoh!” Ichinose exclaims, drowning out the tension that settled itself in her chest. “We’ll need disguises though! So Renge and Spanner don’t spot us!”
Tsuruhara shuffles closer to Ichinose, grin growing with each step and Isaac extended outward, “We can wear hats!”
Their excited planning barely registers.
“Kurgone?” she mutters, eyes locked on the ground.
Could he really be who Renge is…in love with?
Surely not.
But then, Kurgone is a good person, if a bit…serious compared to Renge. She should be happy for Renge. Happy for them.
Rinne’s stomach turns—the traitor.
Suddenly, a hat plops onto her head and, upon looking up, a pair of glasses slide onto her face.
When her brain catches up to her senses she sees Tsuruhara and Ichinose have donned similar accessories.
“Gotcha!” Ichinose shouts, arms thrown triumphantly into the air. “We look perfect!”
Tsuruhara nods in emphatic agreement, although Hopper1 voices a dissenting opinion.
“Ah,” Ichinose lifts the chemy into his hands. “Sorry, Hopper1. We don’t have any sunglasses small enough for you.”
Rinne herds their group out the door of Kitchen Ichinose. They have to hurry if they’re going to catch up with Renge—which is the only thing on her mind and also, she thinks, the last thing she wants.
The image of Renge and someone—(else, she doesn’t think. Refuses to acknowledge. Someone else. Not her.)—laughing, holding hands, kissing perhaps. And Renge in that dress, so pretty with the red of her jacket, her hair done up nicely with bows to match.
It spurs her on faster. Tsuruhara and Ichinose follow behind, light on their feet, taking their roles as spies incredibly seriously.
There’s a brief disruption and Hopper1 ends up in Ichinose’s backpack, but then, it happens.
Renge walks up the stairs of a bridge that, in the distance, Spanner begins descending.
Rinne’s nails bite into the flesh of her palm.
The two pass each other with no acknowledgment.
It’s not him. A breath rushes out of her.
Renge joins a mass of people, all centered around one man, and Rinne momentarily hates herself.
Something is obviously wrong—these people, Renge, under some spell.
And Rinne is relieved.
