Doing hundreds of poses in my sketchbook at Ben's suggestion.

[livejournal.com profile] nadriel is taking me to see Dark Knight later. Yaaayy! I wouldn't be able to see it otherwise, due to the low funds.

Oh, if any of you draw comics, you should check this out. It's a cultural comics exchange program with Japan. The winner gets to go to Tokyo to collaborate with Japanese comic book artists.

I'm curious to know what this pencil thing is people keep going on about.

Don't tell me. I'll see for myself tonight, obviously

I'm starting to love that little bird.

In a non-creepy way, I mean. :)

How about basing them on real life characters you know and then exaggerating them?

My friend Lino does a webcomic based on himself trying different jobs.

The Japanese artists might not be too thrilled if the comic was designed to make fun of their culture.

I also remembered another set of books for children that heavily feature bird illustrations. Local author John Cleave and his Gulley books - thegullery.co.uk if you can excuse the 100% flash website. It looks like he's gone all out and made as much spin-off merchandise from it as possible! Maybe you could venture into the realm of Potoo tea towels.

The drawing where he's looking at the frog is slightly biologically incorrect if his eyes are on the side of his head. If he was examining it closely he'd be looking at it side on rather than head on. However, that wouldn't work as clearly as the way you've done it and it looks like he's more startled than anything else. I'll have to read the story to understand its context.

They aren't tied to a story, they are random sketches Ben Norland suggest I do to explore the character.

hehe Gulley is cute. ^^ Sea gulls are cheeky bastards.

Hope you don't mind me dropping in to look at your journal, I was pointed here by [livejournal.com profile] ms_daisy_cutter after mentioning I'm an aspiring animator (teaching myself CGI through Blender.org).

I've also been trying to teach myself to draw, but not having much luck there. Kinda sucks considering I have some comic projects I want to work on down the road.

Anyways, sweet artwork! Looking forward to seeing more. :)

Thanks!

Not a problem. :) Heh, on the flipside I struggle with CGI.

Regarding drawing, have you taken any life drawing classes? They really help.

Aimee Major's excercises here proved valuable to me too:
