Illustration Friday
Apr. 8th, 2006 08:40 amI'm not sure how many people will read this, but rather than do the topic for this week's Illustration Friday (which by the way is "speed") I think I will write and rant a bit about a trend I keep seeing in some people who participate in IF each week.
More and more people seem to be taking "short cuts". By this I mean posting illustrations that are nothing more than a doctored photograph, or drawing things that are easy to draw like objects and then giving them "symbolic meaning." I realize every illustrator has a different style, be it collage, mixed media or the like, but I feel many people are taking the easy way out because they can't be arsed to grow as draftsmen. You are only hurting yourselves by cheating. Take life drawing classes, study other artists, and most importantly sit down at a desk and draw til you hurt! Sometimes faces and anatomy are hidden within shadows or fancy filters to avoid having to draw them. sheesh!
I realize IF is an informal thing, but for those who are serious about illustration, doctoring photos and drawing things within everyone's capability isn't going to help you: It will stunt your growth.
I hope this post doesn't offend anyone. I just think it had to be said.
Having said that...I'm gonna go draw now!
end rant

Date: 2006-04-08 09:40 am (UTC)"Illustration Friday just gives a no-pressure, fun excuse to use it. No clients looking for a particular thing. No one judging the outcome of the work...Never even picked up a colored pencil? Why not now? Just have time for a doodle? That's okay, we'd love to see it. You don't have to be an illustrator or an artist to participate. Just pick up a pencil, for the love of pete."
Some people are just here to have fun, not to become an illustrator. And not everyone has the opportunity to take classes anyway. It's not so easy to just go do that. For those here just wanting to try some things out and have a little fun with it, so what? That's what the site is for. Not for just proffessionals.
The only thing that frustrates me with the entries are people who put up just plain photographs. That obviously doesn't belong here. But I've seen some great illustrations on here made from photographs too.
The other thing that frustrates me is people putting up links to illustrations that don't exist. Like this post. You have your right to say what you want, of course. But why waste our time by linking to a post without an illustration for that topic? What if everyone started doing that (and a few have unfortunately). It ends up taking away the value of what IF was about in the first place.

And once again, I don't mean to offend anyone.

Date: 2006-04-14 05:38 am (UTC)Also, almost as annoying (to me, at least) are those individuals who post work they completed weeks-months-years ago rather than coming up with something specific to the weekly theme. One time only did I post a piece that was done for a client, and only that because it specifically matched the week's theme and I happened to be finishing it up as Friday rolled around. Even so, it still felt like a bit of a cheat on my part.
Oh well, whattyagonnado?
