Description
This is related to PR #1873, since I haven't yet had time to implement all of the proposed features in my older PR, I thought I'd commit the changes that are currently working.
AppVeyor
This fixes the appveyor builds that have been failing for some time now (#2723) -- maybe we can switch over to Github Actions for a better build system sometime later.
