Personality:
Goku is a very simple creature. He functions on a very basic, child-like level in spite of his age, and this is largely due to the fact that he was locked away in an underground cage for 500 years and has lost all memories of anything prior to that. And so, being so much like a child leaves him with an incredibly cheery disposition. He's easily the most genuinely friendly of the Sanzo group as a result of his child-like naivete (Hakkai may be the most smiley and kind, but he still knows when to be suspicious; Goku does not). He’s naïve to a fault, even a little stupid to a point. But that feeds into both his stubbornness and his sense of curiosity. It's pretty easy to make him smile or befriend him, and so he usually has the same positive effect on other people. He's one of the guys to go to for tension-cutting in most situations; though this could largely be due to the fact that he doesn't really know how to read the atmosphere and act accordingly. He’s fiercely loyal to his closest friends, trusting them with his life (and his sanity) in any situation they happen to wind up in. He’s even quick to trust his newer friends, believing that whatever feeling he has for them is mutual – even if it turns out that it’s not. The very notion of betraying that trust is something he can’t quite fathom, and is more painful to him than it is enraging.

He's certainly not above pulling pranks when the opportunity arises. This is probably why, though he generally tries to be as helpful as possible, it doesn't always work out the way he hopes it will. Things often blow up in his face, or cause more problems for the group than create solutions. He's just not as good at being helpful as he'd like to be, and this shortcoming is a cause of deep shame for him. One of the only things that can truly mellow him out is when he's made - or if he at least thinks he made - someone he cares for deeply (read: Sanzo) very upset, or if one of his friends has been hurt, or if he has been defeated.

Between his desire to help people and his cheery disposition, Goku is the most hero-like out of the whole Sanzo-group. Though he's become friends with many different yokai and people alike throughout the series, he will still fight someone he generally dislikes or has done some wrongdoing no matter how big or small. And although he has the stereotypical hero syndrome, he has stated that the only reason he is fighting for himself, for his right to live. He has also shown that he will fight anyone trying to get in his or his group's way. He likes fighting, displaying enjoyment comparable to a child playing a game. Meeting strong opponents is exciting and challenging to him, and he actually tends to look forward to encounters with them. But, like a child, he really hates to lose. The feeling of getting pushed to his feet and forced to submit to his opponent is, to him, the worst feeling in the world. He refuses to stay down, and will surge back up to the top through whatever means possible, pulling his companions up with him.

Another of his key traits is that he's always, ALWAYS hungry, and he has no qualms about telling people so at any given time (which usually earns him a hard smack over the head with a paper fan or the firing of a gun). The only time he's not hungry is in the moments immediately following a meal. This is a result of the 500 year imprisonment; his body is simply making up for the fact that it received no nourishment for such a long time with an incredibly speedy metabolism.

That said, there is another side to Son Goku. When the power limiter band on his head is broken or removed, his true form comes out. And when this happens, his hair grows out, his ears become long and pointy, his nails become like claws, his teeth like fangs, his eyes narrow... He essentially takes on the appearance that most youkai have, with the exception of being infinitely more powerful, and significantly less sane. He becomes bloodthirsty and sadistic, fully enjoying the chaos and destruction he causes, and becomes unable to distinguish between friend and foe. The only way to calm him is to replace the headband on him somehow, which is something only so many people can actually do (read: Sanzo or one of the gods).

Skills/Special Powers:
Goku is a youkai. And not just any old, run of the mill one; he's quite possibly one of THE most powerful youkais in the world. But that's only when his power limiter (the golden headband he wears) is removed or breaks. When it does, his true form is revealed and he becomes bloodthirsty and sadistic, fully enjoying inflicting pain on others; even going so far as beating his enemies when they can't fight back. He becomes able to move so fast that often others can't even see him and his strength increases so much that he's able to easily inflict near fatal wounds on powerful opponents with only a few blows. In this form, he's also able to take any number of hits of any strength, simply shrugging it off like nothing. Though if something actually does hurt him, he just uses the energy of the earth to heal himself.

He also wields a staff called the "Nyoi Bo", which can grow greatly in length and has been used to impale enemies on occasion. Usually, he just uses it to fight up close as a normal battering sort of weapon. He doesn't use it all the time though, as he’s just as good a fighter with his bare hands. Of course, his usual abilities easily show he's very, very skilled at fighting. In fact, he's such an impressive hand-to-hand fighter that he's even been able to beat up opponents in his sleep.
