I'm far enough from the coast that the blizzard spinning up to hit the Northeastern USA tomorrow/monday is ~only~ going to be a major storm, but still, man. Forecast of another foot of snow when not all the snow from the last big storm has been cleared? And this time wet snow and wind? It isn't going to be fun! I don't expect a power outage but it sure is a possibility, and I expect work to be cancelled on Monday because of this. (I wistfully hope for Tuesday as well but it doesn't seem likely in this industry; so long as the roads are clear-ish and the parking lot and site are plowed enough to get in, it'll be open.)

2.
Went to the other local dojo (not mine, but our cousin dojo; they're about the same distance from where I live now, but that was not always the case) this past Thursday out of "I have Energy right now and also god I miss people and the practice." Absolutely delighted all of them by showing up, and when I was like "yeah Thursday evening fits my schedule better right now" they were all "soooo you're gonna keep coming then?"

And, well, yeah. I will! I like those people! Also I'm going to be taking nidan in a few months and I should be taking class once a week at least in the lead-up to that, just to keep the practice in my body even if it isn't practice dedicated to that test. The sensei there will kindly give me some opportunities to practice with an eye towards the test, especially since his own yudansha like training with me, but it isn't something he needs to do. Neither is the yundansha offering to stick around after class to do specific training with me; that's out of the kindness of their hearts and friendship, and it is truly lovely.

Sometimes I think about what "being good at X" means to me and then sigh about how yeah okay I am generally comparing myself to people who I personally perceive as being "good at X", which tends to mean "better than I am", which means that it is going to be a skewed perspective.

This brought to you by thoughts about cooking. xD.

Thought A: going "...wait if you're asking about salt because you normally salt your rice, please eat some before you do because I salt the rice water (a thing I hadn't realised you don't remember to do)" at a friend last night.

Thought B: ...yeah okay the ability to eyeball pancake ingredients and their ratios and make proper pancakes without needing to keep adding more wet/dry ingredients is a learned skill and speaks to Knowing Things About Cooking. (didn't add enough leavening agent but also I do not actually care if I eat flat pancakes xD they don't need to be fluffy so long as they're Good Flavor.)

Thought C: my belief that if I cook something I will like the thing I cooked even if I was going "idk this is probably a good combination of flavors/stuff" rather than following a recipe, and that the main thing keeping me from being better at cooking is "having more kitchen gadgets" and "bothering to look up recipes to follow instructions" and not "an inability to pull that off", is not a mindset that a lot of people have? I think? Which seems odd to me but I do just Like Cooking, even if it isn't a Major Hobby the way it is for some folk I know.

I spent like all of Tuesday dead of migraine and didn't feel human until maaaaybe Wednesday evening but realistically Thursday morning when I woke up and was like "oh wow I was Out Of It". I am dearly hoping that this nor'easter blizzard isn't going to lead to something similar, but, well. It's the sort of thing that likely will anyway.

5.
Relatedly, I have not written much this past week because of brain being melty and also Doing Things With People. Weird.

But people are good, and I like hanging out with them once I get myself to actually Do That. Initiation/activation energy is the harder part than socialising, and I usually remember this consciously but that doesn't make it easier to apply that knowledge consistently.

[personal profile] hafnia started running the short-form airship heist Eberron campaign I've been hyped about for like six months. xD Finally got to play my Warforged Cleric last weekend! And started getting a sense of the Eberron as it's interpreted for this campaign world, which also means starting to have feelings about what I want to do for the long-form campaign that'll happen after. (Half-Elf, wings, Mark of Detection. Normal stuff! Probably a soulknife rogue or a circle of the moon druid, possibly a bard of some sort; depends on LORE and also if I can bear to part from skillmonkey nonsense.)

The Warforged Cleric is a fun character, though, and it's always a joy to start playing a character and see them start turning into a Person rather than a Vague Concept. I hear that some people can plan things more? But nah, I write a sketch of backstory and a few prominent character traits and the rest can develop through play and interaction.

Conduit (it/its) is a Cleric who, like pretty much all Warforged, served in the Last War. Since the war ended, it and its squadmates have been building a Warforged enclave/outpost in the lower reaches of Sharn, and have recently been going "wait fuck there are organics who want to live here too because we've made a safe place" and realising that this requires More Money than they have. So Conduit, as one of the community leaders and someone oriented towards healing/caretaking anyway, is very willing to take a moderately sketchy job stealing an airship when it's offered.

This surely will not have Consequences!

The next session (for my group; this is being run for a few different sets of players) is tomorrow, in a feat of "wow everyone has two weeks in a row free?" that is rarely managed xD The Consequences will begin coming to roost then, I'm sure, and force all of the PCs (who have no particular attachment to each other) to interact more and give a shit about something other than the coin and their personal lives.

In utterly unrelated fannish things, I am excited for the Witch Hat Atelier anime! It has a full trailer and an air-date now! It is making me want to reread the manga, especially since I think I'd have an even better time with it going in with expectations of "slow-burn story about insular mage cults" rather than "cute slice-of-life mentorship story". (It is both of these things. I like both of these things. Only hearing about the latter when the former begins taking a greater share of the plot is a very ??? thing to experience when one binge-reads manga.)

anyway here's the trailer!

Like many people these days, FTH is trying to detangle ourselves from Google. This won't be quick or easy for several reasons, but this year we've taken one step you'll need to be aware of as a creator or bidder: We've got a Proton email address that we'll be using for some FTH business.

We can't use it for everything, because a lot of our automation will currently only work with gmail. But be sure to add fandomtrumpshate AT proton.me to your email client's allowlist, and look for FTH emails coming from this address as well as our usual gmail!

The kids had a week of school vacation which would've been fun except that Eldest was sick with a nasty stomach bug for the first half. Fortunately she was better by Friday so we still took our planned trip to the science museum -- didn't see a lot of new exhibits but the kids had fun with their favorites and the electricity show was fun as always.

On Wednesday, when eldest was still under the weather, we had a movie day and watched Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind which is the kids' first Miyazaki movie! (they haven't actually watched a ton of movies in general). I picked that out for them because Middle has been VERY enthusiastic about "cute bugs" lately (mainly bees and caterpillars, but also the alien bug monsters from Factorio) and I thought he would enjoy the ohmu and seeing a story about a princess who loved bugs (I was right). Afterwards I found an articulated 3d print model of a ohmu and printed one for everyone.

Speaking of cute bugs, our caterpillar (which hitchhiked inside on Eldest's jacket, and which of course we could not put back outside into the snow) is a cocoon now! In theory it will become a moth.

And speaking of snow, we're supposed to get another ~18 inches tomorrow night. So the kids will almost certainly not be going back to school on Monday after all. This has been far too much snow.

I'm still watching Guardian with my husband; we're up to episode 23 now and still enjoying it a lot, although imo the parts set in Dixing have been some of the weakest. Husband has occasionally been asking me "so did this happen in the book?" and I'm usually like "no, not really" or sometimes "that character doesn't even exist in the book" but here I got to be like "actually, something almost like this scene did happen in the book, and you'll never guess why!" (he guessed).

I watched the first episode of How Dare You and I really want to keep going, but that will probably have to wait till the kids are back in school. I hear it (...unlike Guardian) is very faithful to the novel, and there are some scenes & characters I'm really looking forward to seeing on screen. It's billed as a comedy and starts out as a comedy but uh. That is a clever ruse, to lure you to your doom (the author did this with You Yao, too).

I haven't been reading much, except I read ahead in The Dragon With a Chocolate Heart which was fun. I probably would've reread that book so many times had it existed when I was in middle school. And now I'm better prepped for a dramatic read-aloud. I will probably get back to Record of the Missing Sect Master next.

BEFORE YOU SIGN UP PLEASE READ THIS
even if you've done HA many times and think you know it all

Nominations have reopened but please don't nominate a fandom that isn't already in the tagset unless you are definitely going to request it. Nominations will close 24 hours before sign-ups close.

You will need to request at least one safety fandom. You will need to offer at least one thing that someone else is requesting. If you don't have a safety fandom or you can't be matched to a recipient, you'll be given 24 hours to fix it or delete your sign-up.

You must request at least 3 different fandoms. You must offer at least 3 different fandoms. Angling your offers to match a request you know you can create for is a good idea, but don't pad your offers out with things you aren't really into and then hope no one requests them. If you can't think of three fandoms that you love SO MUCH you're willing to spend two panicked weeks writing 10k/drawing a long comic for them, this might not be the right exchange for you.

You must put DNWs in each request or "I have no DNWs" if you really don't have any. No empty optional detail boxes! Please also consider adding at least one like to your signup! Knowing what you don't want is great, but please leave your creator something to indicate what you do like, even if that's "I love pizza." Prompts and letters are great, but they're not required. If you link a letter, it needs to be readable (not a locked Dreamwidth post) and complete by the time sign-ups end, or your creator is unlikely to use it.

You must check EITHER “I Opt In to Receiving a Comic Instead of Fic” OR “I Do Not Opt In to Receiving a Comic -- Fic Only for Me!” for each request.

If you choose to offer "Any Relationship" that refers to any relationship in the tagset. Since nominations will keep coming in during most of the sign-up phase, make sure you check the tagset periodically to make sure you're comfortable creating for ANY of the nominated ships in your fandom.

Email highadrenalinemod@gmail.com with Do Not Match requests (to prevent a particular person or people from creating for you) and Do Please Assign requests (to ask that you be assigned to create for a particular person). I can't guarantee I'll assign you to the recipient you want, but I'll try. If you are only offering art, please email the modmail after you sign up to let me know who you are matching to/who you would be happy to match to so I can make sure to match you to that person.

Faking a VPN

What would be involved in setting up a fake facsimile of a VPN service to gather intelligence on a criminal organisation?

Would this essentially be a VPN where the relay saves a copy of the traffic? Everything I've found to read on the internet assumes more knowledge of tech and jargon than I have. Could a choice of servers in different countries be faked? A UI seems easy enough, but what about the ISP it connects to? If it was simply a gateway to a real VPN, would the real VPN notice? Could it at some point send a second copy elsewhere without being noticed?
Edit: (See armiphlage's post below, that's the scenario I'm going to work with, a gateway to a real VPN. Thank you armiphalge. Additional info or other suggestions also welcome.)

This could be a scheme the character is pondering near the end, so it doesn't have to work - it could simply be trying to find solutions to some of the concerns. He has a habit of staring out the window late at night mulling over such things. He really wants to be able to build a phone case with a rechargeable listening device but we've gotten lost on the physics of discretely charging it from the phone.

There's the social infrastructure to make it appear legit, website & fake reviews and social engineering to get them to bite. I've already written this for a different operation, not in great detail but enough for my purposes. If faking a VPN is feasible, I'd probably replace the existing scheme in those scenes with this one. But the marketing email may be more along the lines of "Police and governments can't subpoena a service they don't know exists" with a link to the dark web.

Edit: It doesn't need to actually work as a VPN, the character won't care about hiding the users' info. It just needs to look like one from their side of things.

Please be careful with how much detail and tech-speak you throw at me, my health is poor and I am easily overwhelmed. If this is a rubbish idea, please be kind in putting it down.

Thank you for any help.

One of the simplest and purest pleasures in fiction is to ride along as an unhappy person becomes happier, and this at the heart is the charm of the self-pub coming-of-trans novel Our Simulated Selves.

On first glance the premise of this one could seem dire: depressed incel, told by dream girl that they would not date even if the incel was the "last man on Earth," uses advanced brain-scanning technology and giant quantum supercomputer to set up a simulation world where literally everybody else on Earth does disappear immediately after that argument, and see how long it takes sim self and dream girl to get together in this apocalypse scenario. (The reader, who has already seen our protagonist describe dysphoric brain fog and experience mysterious joy about playing a girl character in D&D, will at this point certainly have some ideas about the ways that this sad incel is working from some fundamentally incorrect principles.)

Most of the book is from the POV of sim protagonist with occasional outside-world interjections and responses from the simulation runner, which means you also get sort of a fun inside/outside view of an apocalypse-ish survival situation -- within the simulation, protagonist and dream girl are running around gathering up non-perishable food and trying to figure out how long the power grid is going to last; meanwhile, outside the simulation, Protagonist Zero Version is like 'shit, I didn't really think through that they'd be treating this like an apocalypse and I forgot to write any code for food spoilage!' But the main satisfaction of the book is in watching our protagonist go through the work of transformation to become a better and happier person -- with a little added weight, because at the same time we're also seeing the worst and cruelest and most unhappy version. Overall I found the reading experience really charming and sweet!

Hiratsuka Raicho (1886-1971)

Feb. 20th, 2026 08:45 pm
nnozomi: (pic#16721026)
[personal profile] nnozomi posting in [community profile] senzenwomen
Hiratsuka Raicho was born in 1886 in Tokyo, the daughter of a well-to-do senior government official who had studied in Europe; her birth name was Haruko. She graduated from Japan Women’s College (developing a lifelong interest in Zen meditation while a student) in 1906. The next few years were spent studying English and Japanese literature at various schools (including the Eigakujuku founded by Tsuda Umeko), where she studied writing with Ikuta Choko and Morita Sohei. In 1908 Haruko and Morita plunged into a rapidly developing love affair, culminating in an attempt at a love-suicide which it turned out neither of them could bring themselves to go through with. This created an enormous scandal (causing Haruko’s father to lose his job and estranging them until her children were born years later), especially when Morita wrote a novel about it.

In 1911, upon Ikuta’s suggestion that she found a literary magazine run entirely by women, she consulted with her sister’s friend Yasumori Yoshiko and formed an initial editorial board of herself, Yoshiko, Nakano Hatsuko, Kiuchi Teiko, and Mozume Kazuko. The funding for their first issue came from what would have been Haruko’s dowry, handed over by her resigned but supportive mother Tsuya. The magazine was christened Seito [Bluestocking], and Naganuma Chieko drew the illustration for the cover of the inaugural issue, which included a poem by Yosano Akiko and Haruko’s own essay on the theme of “In the beginning, woman was the Sun,” which became a classic of Japanese feminist literature on the spot. The essay called for women’s genius to be released from the strictures of a patriarchal society. It was at this time that she began using the penname Raicho, “thunderbird” or rock ptarmigan.

Other supporters included Hasegawa Shigure, Okada Yachiyo, Mori Shige, and Koganei Kimiko; contributors and assistants included Tamura Toshiko, Nogami Yaeko, Mizuno Senko, Otake Kokichi, Senuma Kayo, Kamichika Ichiko, Ito Noe, Mikajima Yoshiko, and Okamoto Kanoko. Raicho was the moving force, organizing an edition dedicated to discussion of Ibsen’s Nora and her ramifications as well as lecture series and other events. The Bluestocking women became notorious not only for their literary and activist work but also for the “Five-Colored Alcohol Incident” (in which Kokichi went out to a fashionable bar and drank fancy cocktails) and for their in-person observation of the Yoshiwara red-light district (where Raicho chatted with a woman who had attended the same elementary school), identifying them as “decadents,” modern feminists, New Women, distinct from traditional good girls. This era apparently saw a record number of “Noras,” daughters and young wives leaving home with no warning. Raicho took up the gauntlet without hesitation, adding translations of texts by Ellen Key and Emma Goldman to her magazine. Articles by the activist Fukuda Hideko and by Raicho herself earned publication bans from the government.

Raicho spent 1911 and 1912 in a relationship with the “boyish” Kokichi, who liked to affect masculine dress (there is relatively little to be found about this in histories of Raicho, especially in Japanese). In 1914 she moved in with the artist Okumura Hiroshi, nicknamed the “little swallow” because he was (gasp, shock, horror) three years younger than she was. She continued to insist on a common-law marriage until 1941, when wartime asperities made it more convenient to marry officially. In her eyes the relationship was a part of her refusal to engage in the “good wife, wise mother” style of marriage which restricted women’s freedom, but many of the older women in her vicinity, Akiko included, saw it as a feckless young artist leeching off the older and (somewhat) more together Raicho.

Distracted by pregnancy and Okumura’s illness, Raicho passed on editorship of Bluestocking to Ito Noe in 1915; the magazine lasted another year and a bit. Raicho herself later worked as a critic, raised two children (Akemi, born in 1915, and Atsufumi in 1917, both on Raicho’s family register rather than Okumura’s), and engaged in debates on motherhood with Akiko, Yamakawa Kikue, and Yamada Waka. In 1920, she founded the New Women’s Association along with Ichikawa Fusae and Oku Mumeo, fighting for women’s suffrage and greater support for mothers, specifically for an amendment to Article 5 of the Peace Police Law, which prohibited women’s political participation, and a law restricting marriage for men with venereal disease. The former demand was realized two years later (although the latter never came about). With the support of well-known male writers including Sakai Toshihiko, Mori Ogai, and Arishima Takeo, the new Association thrived and Raicho resorted to Western dress to save time amid lecture tours and articles. Three years later she cut her hair (or rather had Okumura cut it for her), becoming the image of the short-bobbed Modern Girl (although her original purpose was to cure her chronic headaches).

Raicho devoted herself after the war to working for world peace through women’s organizations, including opposition to the Vietnam War. She remained the main household breadwinner, albeit with financial support from her birth family. Okumura died in 1964, and Raicho followed him in 1971 at the age of eighty-five.

I was sick for the last three days and couldn’t really look at screens for long, so now I’m so behind on my reading page! I might declare amnesty so if you posted something you’d like me to see let me know!

Meanwhile I have continued reading many graphic novels (and not watching anything) so here are some thoughts on my most recent reads.

Lumberjanes, Vol. 3-7 by N.D. Stevenson and Shannon Watters, et al.— These continue to be very fun! Lots of friendship and adventure, plus I love how colorful they are. The camper who is transitioning from a Scouting Lad to a Lumberjane is also very charming! I’m glad I’m rereading these! (And only a few more volumes until I get to new to me stuff)

Batman: The Golden Age, Vol. 1 by Bill Finger, Bob Kane et al— I have a habit of turning anything I’m interested in into a historical research project of some type. Thus I ended up reading this collection of the very first Batman comics. They are not especially good stories, but it's fun seeing bits of lore that feel essential to Batman slowly being added. The batplane and batarangs both show up before the Batcave and the batmobile! Neither of which showed up in these comics. Bruce just keeps his batman stuff in a chest in a room with windows, and drives around in a normal car. The causal racism in these sure is a lot though.

City of Secrets and City of Illusion by Victoria Ying— fun middle grade steampunk adventures! These are not very dense (not a lot of words on any one page) so they are very fast reads. I enjoyed the art, theirs a good sense of motion and lots of fun gears and things

Doughnuts and Doomby Balazs Lorinczi— A short graphic novel about a witch and a singer who meet by chance when both of them are having a really bad day. This was very cute but it was so short there wasn’t really time to develop the characters or their relationship much

Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson— So I’m not big on contemporary middle grade fiction, because stuff about making new friends, dealing with bullies and other school social dynamics stresses me out most of the time. But several people who I think have good taste recommended this graphic novel about a girl who is not getting along with her best friend and ends up attending a roller derby camp without knowing anyone else there. I’m glad I read it because it was really good!

The Legend of Brightblade by Ethan M. Aldridge— Another graphic novel by Aldridge – this one is about a prince who wants to be a bard. He ends up running away and forming a band. It’s very charming, though definitely not a book that’s thinking critically about monarchy. The art as always with Aldridge is great!

Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanvids/fanart/fancrafts/other kinds of fanworks/fics/podfics have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

Nominations for Unsent Letters 2026 are now open (a little late, my apologies)! The tagset is here.

Nominations will remain open until Feb 25, 11:59PM UTC (countdown).

Please disambiguate all relationship nominations (include the fandom in parentheses after the relationship). This will help your nominations get approved faster!

    AO3 Collection | Rules
Mod contact: DW PM or unsentlettersexchange @ gmail

    • You may nominate 7 fandoms, and 7 relationships in each fandom.
    • Please disambiguate all nominations: add the fandom in parentheses to the end of the relationship, e.g. Cassian Andor/Jyn Erso (Rogue One).
    • Please nominate under a specific media type if possible. Nominations under [Fandom] & Related Fandoms or [Fandom] - All Media Types will be accepted, but please note that requests under All Media Types will not match to an offer under a specific media type, and vice versa.
    • Nomination clarifications will be posted to this community. If a clarification question is unanswered by the end of nominations, I will amend the nomination to the best of my knowledge.
    • If you spot duplicate nominations, let me know in a comment to this post.
