the dukes, on the other hand, are largely feared due to their ruthlessness and a history of mental instability. a strictly patriarchal family, the eldest male is always known as red, and passes on that name to whoever should succeed him. marriages are traditionally made within the family in an effort to keep blood "pure," but as of late, that rule has been disregarded in favor of gaining influence and brokering peace. (it is also, in part, an effort to eradicate the "madness" that runs in the family, but a divided stance within the family has made it somewhat difficult to properly execute, even for the sake of politics.) they are also the family that most aggressively takes advantage of the trappings of their wealth, racking up a rather alarming body count that they try to cover up with their own pr staff. a pendulum that swings at the heart of the dukes, scarlet rages between periods of intense mania and less frequent periods of lucidity. fascinated by her own father, her periods of aggression and self-grandeur lend her a violent fury that, when directed properly, can lead to a complete disregard for her own personal safety as long as she is under the belief it is for the betterment of her father (more so than the duke clan themselves). following these month-long periods come fragments of lucidity where scarlet is the girl she was prior to her episodes (beginning, rumor has it, when coquelicot was married to alister darling); quiet, withdrawn and careful enough for needlepoint, bearing no opinion one way or the other on her family's notions of purity. with the increasing decline in her lucid moments, she has slowly started to replace her fascination with red duke with the saints and their ritualistic cannibalism. |
