It's been a (heck of a) week
1) Doglet is sick, though on the mend. He was seeming standoffish yesterday morning, and then as I was in bed drinking coffee, I had the dawning suspicion that I was smelling something wildly uncoffeelike--kind of the opposite of that Folger's commerical from the 90s where the woman in the upstairs bed is stirring and blissfully scenting the air. That was the first of two carpet messes and several (much worse) long spells of him trembling and looking miserable. Antibiotics seem to be helping a bunch, though, and he is SO EXCITED about getting special bland food from a can, vet's orders.
2) Difficult and confusing family stuff, which involves two people I love having terrible fights and then having wildly divergent understandings of the incidents in question (incidents I didn't witness and really can't parse out from either of their stories). I've had conversations with both of them now that are "You and [other person] seem to have have hugely different experiences of this incident. Any idea what's going on there?" And the answer is, no, it's all very baffling. And, yeah, color me baffled too.
3) Spent two hours today in an intense discussion with my work colleagues that went from the politics of Baby It's Cold Outside to the politics of blackface for Halloween. It managed to not devolve into a yelling match (though dude who was really angry about the possibility of someone calling him racist came close to yelling at me for not having considered that maybe he wouldn't MEAN a costume to be offensive), but it was tense, and I've spent the intervening hours unable to stop thinking of things I could would should have said. At least we got some comic relief early on when it turned the out person who'd started it all off with "Did you hear they banned Baby It's Cold Outside?" had never heard the song and thought (in the manner of those "person who's never read Harry Potter summarizes the books" articles) that it was probably about a woman who wanted to go play in the snow and a man who didn't want to go with her because it was too cold.
