It's not that old IMO. I've had the DVDs since around 2002 (I found it in a box a few days ago, thus the caps). It's my absolute favorite anime.
It's not for everyone. It's a great story, a classic even, and the various artwork in it is beautiful... but it has some quirks that tends to frustrate people and it can be a little slow. (Historical Dramas, what do you expect) The whole thing can be found on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=FD9B7FFB853888C3) if you feel adventurous or bored enough to give it a go. :/
I'm going to screen cap all 13 episodes eventually. It gets pretty messed up later on.
ANN lists it as being from 1990. That's about 10 years before I started watching anime. ^____^
Thanks for the link to it. I might give it a try, if I find that I'm able to catch up on everything else. The description at ANN sounds pretty cool. I'm into historical anime, very much so.
Wait until the third episode on... shit gets trippy.
YES! I saw the icon, thank you! I love it, it's awesome!<3
I drew this for ya (http://pics.livejournal.com/java_mint/pic/000ch5db). My only excuse is that I was running on a full dose of NyQuil. Obviously, me and drugs don't mix well...
Anyway, I hope your sinus infection is better. Seriously, get some rest! D:
Excuse? Excuse? Dear lord, man... that's too, too damned cool like you don't even know, the color scheme, the composition... shit man, your stuff just gets better and better!
PSSS: speaking of wacked out anime, check out "Barefoot Gen" if you haven't already seen (though you probably have). late 80s-to-mid 90s anime is by far my favorite and I'm glad that from what I can tell you have the same taste. Stiff animation aside it feels like a lot of it had a level of brutality that you don't really see nowadays. And I don't just mean that in a "LOL EDGY" way so much as... idk, the aesthetic felt a lot grittier and I miss that a lot. Even if the animation is way less crappy now. But really, what else can you say about something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJZ6nwxD38)?
I love "Barefoot Gen"! I had to watch it in HS for world history, etc. Still, I enjoyed it enough to buy myself a copy. I... I can't watch it much though. It tends to make me a little queasy.
But yes. To me, 80s-to-mid 90s anime is just.. just the bees knees. Granted, it's "old school" but I dunno. Everything was more expressionistic and... I suppose 'grittier' is the best term I can think of too. Everything was mostly limited on their color pallet so they were all muted, washed out or just damn dark. It was a style, really. You don't see that anymore without some type of hokey special effects filter that doesn't do it justice.
I mean, if they redid that bombing of Hiroshima scene from Barefoot Gen today... it wouldn't of been the same. At least in the sense that there wouldn't be a blue, red, orange & green mushroom cloud with a pink & teal backdrop.

Eh- I'm nitpicking. I'll shut up now.
